Thanks to the wonders of ebay I have obtained a new robot to my collection! I'm rolling out the blood red carpet for this silent mechanical monster. He earns it in my eye sensors. I love this killer robot!
I present to you Maximillian from "The Black Hole."
9 inches tall, he reaks of plastic uber coolness. This 1979 model was already assembled by the seller. They airbrushed him to look corroded like in the film, and even added a nice gloss coat to shine him up. He's missing his stand, but I can make one, just need to get a metal wire that'll fit in his back so he hovers on his stand. For a late 70's model, he's nicely detailed. His arms rotate and are posable, his little exhaust wings also move, and his head rotates as well! This model is awsome!on line abortion pill misoprostol dose abortion medical abortion pill online https://www.flickr.com/photos/blue_bezel/ |

Thanks. The moment he poped up on ebay, I watched him like a freakin hawk. The usual unnassembled boxed models are pretty plentiful, but it's rare to see an assembled one for sale. I'm very proud he didn't cost me much. Guess the fact he was missing his stand, box, instructons, and that the one photo of him was kinda blury helped me out. I'm very happy with him.
Now to just get a stand built for ol Max.
Max rules!

That's one nice looking Maximillian!
The airbrush corroded look really helps him look much like one the in the film. Models and toys never seem match their film counterparts (robots, vehicles, etc.) very well when they're all perfect looking.

Yeah, Max isn't fully accuret but he is very very close to the film version Maximilian, which is impressive for a robot model. If I get some free time I might compile up some screen caps to show how close he is. If you look in the close up photos I took, they put in the little groves in the lines of his chest, which is infact on him in the film.
Fun fact about Maximillian: George McGinnis, the robot designer of the film, intended for Max's whole body to be internally lit by electronics so it would light up like a glowing furnace with light pouring out of the cracks. Due to time they couldn't. You will also notice they left Max's main thruster and lower leg jet vents on him, yet they are not lit as well.
There is an awsome picture in my Cinefantastique Magazine of George McGinnis standing with a whole line of Sentry bots in a dark perspective shot. I'll scan it and post it when I get some time. The black and white photo is awsome!

Here's that Sentry image with the robot designer Mc Ginnis. The image lines are typical when your scanning magazine photo prints.

Sketch,
Most scanners will compensate for that. Look for an advanced option to remove crosshatching or descreen (as my Canon scanner calls it) and it should give you a better magazine scan. I'd love to see that one without the lines.

I rescanned the image. My scanner has no crosshatch option. But I rescanned at it's highest resolution, which eliminatd the pattern created by the print matrix.
Also scanned this amazing image of the Cygnuss, which was a mini ad in my magazine. It was also the cover art of this Cinefantastique Magazine.
If you subscribed, you would of recieved a free full color 17x22 inch poster of this image, which was created by matte artist David B. Mattingly, who worked on Black Hole and Tron. His latest film was I, Robot. This guy is amazing. https://www.flickr.com/photos/blue_bezel/ |

Can someon explain the ending of the film to me? Was the Black Hole literally a portal to Heaven/Hell depending on who you were?

Yeah it seems it is.
We see Max fuse with Riegnhart, who's long beard mabey hints that he's been floating in purgatory for a bit, and the two become a cyborg overloard of hell. The zombie crew of the Cygnuss is left to wander hell for entenity, which is funny cause death was suppose to be their release as Old Bob stated. Heh. Then cut to shiny Hallway to Heaven scene, complete with newely arrived flying souls, which I think is also symbolic of the Palamino crew exiting the Black Hole. That's about as best as I can explain it.
On the dvd, Ellenshaw stated that the movie script originally didn't have an ending until later into production. He mentions a more contraversial ending they had in mind where once they enter the Black Hole the camera pulls back to Michelangelo's famous Creation of Man section of the Sistine Chapel painting with the crew looking up at it.
I can only imagine the audiences expressions when they saw the hell segment with the knowledge that this was Disney. https://www.flickr.com/photos/blue_bezel/ |

I think back in the late 70's - early 80's, Disney was taking a beating at the box office. They weren't really doing any traditional animated films, and they didn't have spiffy movies with lots of special effects to compete with Star Wars.
So, they decided to do something about. Disney started taking risks. (Shock. ) And thus, we got some really cool movies out of Disney's studios . . . The Black Hole, and Tron. I almost think that nearly going out of business, was the best thing that could have happened to Disney at the time. They weren't afraid to take chances any more. Now that Disney is riding high again . . . a lot of their stuff is mired in mediocrity. Always playing the safe bets.
