Woops. Didn't see this thread when I was being transfered from the other sectors. They say a little disorientation is normal.
Here's my intro for enquiring minds.
I became a game designer because of TRON.
Saw the movie in a Pennsylvania drive-in during the summer of '83 and became instantly a digital fanatic. It took me a long career in graphic design, IT, and video to finally be at a place in my life to make games, and now here I am.
For the first four years of my daughter's life we watched TRON every Friday afternoon. I'm still kind of stunned I gave my 20th Anniversary edition away to some twelve year I wanted to inspire to be a future game dev. Oh well I still have the widescreen edition, The Art of TRON and two copies of the novel to cherish.
I've lurked the site two or three times a year for the past six or or so years. Today I was brought back because my daughter was playing the arcade game in Mame and I was looking for additional hacks. About a decade ago I hacked it a bit in Mame and made the tanks and bikes go through walls, stopped timers and grid bugs in their tracks and other weirdness I was hoping to show off to my kid.
Then I saw some current fan games being made and thought "Hey maybe iGame3D can be a solution for open TRON game designs!" Specifically cross platform games since everything out there seems windows only which is sadly an example of Ed Dillinger and the MCP running things from on high.
There were some posts I wanted to address, lets see if I can remember what they were.
Oh TRON pen and paper RPG. I actually implemented it the same summer I saw the movie in TSR's (remember them?) TOP SECRET spy game. The module had some weird German name we dubbed "Scratchintesticles" and was about a super hallucinogen named Zukor. When my players took the chemical they were transported into a TRON world complete with lightcycles, tanks, and deadly discs. It was...trippy.
Following that, I wrote a video game design on sheets of yellow math scratch paper called "Caverns of Zukor", using modified Recognizer's as my main enemy. Basically the more parts of the recognizer their were, the harder the enemy was to defeat and the more points you got. The game was basically Star Wars + TRON. I sent the game idea off to Atari that year, I was twelve. Ten years later I saw the game in an arcade, it was called Operation Starblade. The game was my idea right down to computer controlled flight path and the game the game controls!!
Here's a bunch of YouTube videos for that I think you'll spot the similarities to some TRON stuff, but not as many similarities as I remember from my penciled sketches.
I would have died if I found that in 1984!
Instead I had an Aquarius, Discs of Tron, the Story LP, the read along with the book casette, a lightcycle, an action figure and a TRON lenticular yo-yo (with animated recognizers wooo!). Oh I had the board game too, we ended up shooting the discs at each other instead of the stupid one inch lightcycle targets that came with the game.
Ok I think that covers my basic intro.
Please say hello, and let me know if you have software, art, writing game dev interests so that we can merge functions before the interrupt interface.

www.klov.com, the Killer List Of Videogames, says:STARBLADE
Description: A space shooter. There are two seperate missions; the first is to destroy the planet Red Eye and the second is to destroy the enemy fleet and their leader.
Cabinet Information: A sit-down cockpit game where the seat vibrates when you are hit by an enemy missle. The game weighs 896 pounds when shipped. |
Just FYI..
I've never seen the game itself, but by looking at the Youtube vids, it looks a lot like CyberSled combined with Star Wars Trilogy Arcade. That game looks insanely awesome, any idea where to find it or if it's been ported?
You say you sent your idea over to Atari, yet the game's title screen says Namco. Did the letter get lost in the mail?
Wow, considering how similar the gameplay looked to Star Wars Trilogy Arcade, which I am seriously hooked on, I'd say you're a pro at game design! Nice job!abortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion

Hi, My name is John Nilsson and I've always liked the TRON movie. When I decided to do a demo-game, the choice wasn't hard on the theme...
Check out the intro on youtube:

The finish of the game was important to me, I wanted it to look like it could be a real arcade game.
Anyways - it seems to be a lot to check out here in the TRON-sector!
What's your opinion?
PS. Shouldn't this thread be sorted with newest posts first? DS.

Hi all. I am a bit of a fan but what really brought here me is that I am looking for an alphabet and/or font for the english language in tron style of letters. I have been trying to search here and elsewhere on the net and keep getting a server error with this site and nothing of use on google, yahoo, wikipedia. I don’t even need a program that will write in the tron style, though that would be great. I would be happy to just see a gallery of the alphabet in tron style. Any pointers?
Thanks in advance,
Urza

Greetings, NastyCruncher and welcome to TRON-Sector!
Your name seems familiar. I think we may have met on the light cycle game grid before. I was very addicted to multiplayer light cycles for quite a while.
I believe Patch Gone Bad is no more. Some of the former members there are members here as well, although not all of them are active here.
There is also http://www.ldso.net - official website of the Living Dead System Operators. Many of the members there are also members here, but I think there are some old Patch Gone Bad alumni there as well.
I'm not much help on this - sorry about that. I'm sure someone will chime in soon with more useful info for you.

Neither Sora.EXE or mega byte.exe have been around in some time. Perhaps you can point them back in this direction.

Hello Fellow Programs:
Forgive me for the long entry to follow; hope this doesn't penalize me - I am new here, and have been a TRON fan since I was blown away at the age of 9 back in '82 at a movie house somewhere on the suburban outskirts of Cincinnati, Ohio. Just like the Mighty Autobots and Evil Decepticons mezmermized me back in their 1984 US debut(which I still am into), I also am still a Tron geek, LOL!!!!
To me, TRON is one of the most important and revolutionary films in film history, as it is a multi-layered science fiction (or I'd even say science reality to some degree) filmic statement on the intersection of humans and technology as well as religion, faith, good vs. evil, the oppressed overtaking and defeating the oppressor, AI vs HI(Human Intelligence), organic thought vs. artificial thought (the line by Dr. Gibbs underscores this perfectly and it eerily predicts what I feel has happened a lot today - that alot of people have allowed computers to think for them rather than thinking critically and analytically for themselves), and several other metaphysical and metaphorical symbologies.
It will forever leave an impression on me that is unique, cool, and forever mind-blowing, as did the coin-op video game of the same name. Man! I have memories of many happy trips to a local grocery store to plunk quarter after quarter into the TRON coin-op (though it beat my behind, LOL!!!!!). Wish they had come out with it on Colecovision, though.
I've also got the 20th Anniversary DVD, haven't played the Tron 2.0 game yet (it looks like a decent addition to the TRON universe from the screen shots and video clips I've seen), and am anxiously looking forward to another celluloid addition at a local movie theater, only if they do it right. I've read about the hell that Steven Lisberger has gone through trying to grace us with another filmic chapter of his TRON story - and I'm sure DAVETron can enlighten me on that situation as well.
While I am trying hard to be optimistic, I'm not too keen on the corporate end of the equation; way too many times, corporate suits have meddled with film productions and the film ends up suffering for it, in my humble opinion. I recall hearing years back about a supposed remake and wasn't too cool with that, then not too long ago, on imdb (which you have to take with some salt), I saw something about a TRON sequel, which to me, is the more logical progession.
Whatever silver screen plans manifest for TRON (as well as video games, and other media), I hope that: A)Steven Lisberger has FULL involvement since we owe our pleasure first to him for this TRON thing; B)That the ORIGINAL TRON crew and cast has some involvment; C)That the parties in A & B and THE FANS are listened to and considered; D)that it ties in and preserves some of the original history and elements of the first film, and E)that any changes made (I know that computer technology has changed DRASTICALLY since 1982, so I expect some changes) be logical, sensible, intelligent, faitfhul, respectful, and common sense in relation to this fascinating, timeless piece of intellectual property, that's the reason behind us all coming to this site in the first place.
I want to thank Auric and everyone else involved in this site for the opportunity to post on here, and I look forward to a long cool awesome ride. Have a blessed day, all of you. End of Line.
Sincerely,
Renegade Program
