How many planets are there?

on Tuesday, August, 02, 2005 2:50 AM

Take a gander at this article . . .

http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/050729_new_planet.html
You could technically say there are at least 13 planets in our solar system. (According to this and a few other articles.)

On the other hand, you could also say there are only 8 planets in the solar system.

So the question is . . . what is the definition of a planet? That's what astronomers are struggling with now, after finally confirming the fabled "tenth planet" in our solar system.

What do you think? Should all the "planets" they've discovered, be officially declared planets? Or should Pluto lose its status as a planet? What a mess.

so what happened to the planet discovered 1/2 years ago?

the one that the spacey people named SEDNA, or something similar.

wouldn't that mean this is the 11th planet?

11 i can understand, but 13?!?! order abortion pill morning after pill price where to buy abortion pill

I think they should be called planets, and we should name one "Tron"

YAY! Then, we could send scientists on "TRON", and they could live there! (If its atmosphere could keep humans alive) That'd be cool!

yes. and then they'll create a teleporter that accidentally sends people to hell. like what happens on "MARS" in a certain sci-fi "game"<-- i prefer the term opinion on the future

seriously though. i'm still unable to take in the fact that there are 13 planets. i know of 10, unless one was a hoax.

Depends on how many there are out there beyond Uranus.

The asteroid belt was supposedly a planet that was destroyed. Maybe it was the space mushroom from Katamari Damacy!

Or, maybe the Asteroid belt was actualy the Earth Mach 1. That'd be wierd!

Slartibartfast: NO! A human found out the secret! BRING ON THE VOGONS!

Zaphod: YAY! More destruction!

Arthur: Why do we have to destroy the new Earth?

Slartibartfast: Shut-up, Earthman.

Arthur: Geez....I'm never listened to.

was there a joke in there somewhere? my schoolboy humour has left me.

having said that, i do remember a joke that has something to do with star trek and toilet paper.

ok, here are the 10 planets i know of:

Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune
Pluto
Sedna [http://www.nineplanets.org/sedna.html]
so where are the other 3?

I did a little digging yesterday and found this:

01. Mercury
02. Venus
03. Earth
04. Mars
05. Jupiter
06. Saturn
07. Uranus
08. Neptune
09. Pluto
10. Quaoar - Kupier Belt Object, Not Classified as a planet yet.
11. Sedna - Kupier Belt Object, Not Classified as a planet yet.

12. Varuna - Kupier Belt Object, Not Classified as a planet yet.
13. 2002 AW197 - Kupier Belt Object, Not Classified as a planet yet.

I think they should put the debating astroscientists in a room, arm them with swords and not let any out alive until they all agree on a classification standard.

There's too much open interpretation between what does or doesn't qualify as a planet.

It's the disagreement that creates the best science. A good scientist will take that in and formulate a better hypothesis and seek a better answer.abortion pills online abortion questions cytotec abortion

plan·et
n.

A nonluminous celestial body larger than an asteroid or comet, illuminated by light from a star, such as the sun, around which it revolves. In the solar system there are nine known planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.

Opinion doesn't make good science.

A nonluminous celestial body larger than an asteroid or comet, illuminated by light from a star, such as the sun, around which it revolves.

Even that definition represents exacty how faulty it is that there are no solid declarations of a planet. Here are two "asteroids", one a bit larger than the other, both orbiting the sun. Does that make the larger one a planet? It's bigger than "an" asteroid, right?

There needs to be a better standard, but the problem is so many that make sense render some of our current planets back to a non-planet status. It makes better sense to employ some other determination, such as the presense of a magnetic field, a specified minimal sphereness, a presense of a molten center,... SOMEthing else. Perhaps there needs to be a declared diameter involved, and perhaps allot a smaller designation to the status planetoid to the range below that 'til one gets to "asteroid diameters."

We're about to open up a massive amount of such discoveries and the time for clarity is now.

This article has a decent definition of "planet", without becoming overly long and complex:
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/050802_planet_definition.html
A planet is a body that directly orbits a star, is large enough to be round because of self gravity, and is not so large that it triggers nuclear fusion in its interior.

That definition rules out asteroids, at least. The "directly orbits" part is open to different interpretations, though.

Sounds like some of my relatives could be planets then, except that sometimes they DO generate their own nuclear fusion depending on what we had for dinner.

Well, then what is the confusion with these guys categorizing these new discoveries? It's relative roundness?

That new definition of planets has only been proposed, and not accepted. Astronomers are still bickering over an official, widely accepted, new defintion of "planet". One that rules out obviously silly things like asteroids and comets.

Expect them to take years to hash this thing out . . . and then, will Pluto lose its status as a planet? A lot of people will find that hard to accept.

Especially the Plutonians.

Which brings up another question. Why was Endor considered a Moon? Looked like a Planet to me. Was it orbiting some other huge planet out there that we never got to see?

I'd call it a planet. just because it has some resemblance to a planet. The orbit is a 45degree tilt from the typical solar plane, as is the astroid they just performed a test on. If it didn't have gravity, it wouln't be so massive. it's cold out there, which may be the reason it's properies are different..

I remember hearing about this a while back. I'd like to dig into this stuff, but not tonight!on line abortion pill misoprostol dose abortion medical abortion pill online
