Two years ago, I was waging quite the battle for a showing of TRON during one of my company's "Movie Days". What we do is pick a list of movies and then begin voting for which movie the group wants to watch. After some weeks of voting, it was down to just two contenders: Better Off Dead and TRON.
To try and sway voters, I brought in TRON toys, TRON movies (various formats), TRON books, and the TRON soundtrack. To also further my cause, I created a document titled "Better Off Dead vs. TRON or 'Why TRON Could Totally Kick Lane's Whiny Butt'"
Having just now rediscovered this document while cleaning up old files on my workstation, I now present it to the TRON Sector community ... just in case anybody else should ever need to compare the two films.

None of this swayed my coworkers, though. In the end, the anti-TRON camp rallied and put Better Off Dead over the top.
But my campaigning did get a few people interested in seeing TRON, which meant my DVDs were roaming for a few weeks.

Hehhe, that's pretty funny. You guys should have had more than one movie day and seen both.
I disagree with your analysis of the above through. Sure, Journey contributed two songs, but they were definately not the main part of the music used in the film. Wendy Carlos' score was much more utilized than the Journey Songs and kicked ass over anything used in Better Off Dead.

True, but nobody in my office was going to know Wendy Carlos by name, and if they looked her up, I'm sure I would have heard something along the lines of "She used to be a dude?"
Journey was the easier choice.

I dunno; I found the score used in the Meyer/Stalin ski race very moving. I also think Charles de Mar is a god. Hard choice there, my friend. But I'm afraid as much as I love Better Off Dead it has to be Tron. And no, Johnny ain't getting his $2 back neither!

Yeah - I know the feeling. I'm the only TRON geek in my office too.

I've seen TRON so many times (as have we all).
But I've only heard of "Better Off Dead". NEVER seen it!
Not a single time!  
I don't even know what it's about! Not a thing! (other than a few tid bits I picked up reading through the vs. items above)
I'm the exact opposite of most people in that respect!

I've never seen Better Off Dead. Maybe I'm a little biasesed, especially since I've never seen that movie and Tron is my favorite movie , but umm...

Better Off Dead is a pretty funny 80's movie that has a VERY young John Cusak in it.
I remember this film being the first one I saw that had dark humor as it's base. Not so much silly but you do find yourself laughing at things you think maybe you shouldn't be. If you like Airplane and Ferris Beuler's Day Off, you'll like this movie.

How can any 80s pop culture geeks not know the glory that is Better Off Dead?
You MUST see that film! Savage Steve Holland has such a weird/wicked sense of humor and John Cusack is so funny in it! As is Curtis Armstrong as Charles De Mar and the whole cast (especially Ricky and the Japanese brothers - one of who speaks no English and the other one learned English by watching Howard Cosell on Wide World of Sports)!!!!!
One of the classic and quintesential 80s films!

I actually think I may have seen it, but I am remembering something else. I think I am confusing it with John Cusack's 'Hot Pursuit' which happens to be one of Steven Lisberger's films.
I will check it out this weekend if possible.

Also check out the pseudo-sequel to Better Off Dead called "One Crazy Summer"! It, too, is directed by Savage Steve Holland (who did the fun HBO series of Encyclopedia Brown back in the late 80s/early 90s and created EEK! The Cat on Fox) and stars John Cusack. It also has Demi Moore and Bobcat Goldthwait!
Plus the immortal William Hickey! That old man was funny, yo!
That's a great double feature! Very fun, very goofy and very 80s!
