To compute or not to compute that is the question at hand. Tis nobler to compile in C++ or in TASM.

That's a shame. If anything, at least he was part of something that has brought joy to millions of people around the planet. His legacy and contribution to popular culture will live on forever.

That is true, and I was fortunate enough to meet him in person one time up here in Montreal at a science fiction convention. I had only spoken with him for a few moments and had I was there when he was doing a Q&A at the convention. A very nice Fellow to talk to and funny. I should have taken picture when I had a chance too.

'Star Trek's' Doohan Dies

on Wednesday, July, 20, 2005 2:24 PM

By BOB THOMAS, Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES - James Doohan, the burly chief engineer of the Starship Enterprise in the original "Star Trek" TV series and movies who responded to the command "Beam me up, Scotty," died Wednesday. He was 85.

Doohan died at 5:30 a.m. at his Redmond, Wash., home with his wife of 28 years, Wende, at his side, Los Angeles agent and longtime friend Steve Stevens said. The cause of death was pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease, he said.

Doohan had said farewell to public life in August 2004, a few months after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

The Canadian-born Doohan was enjoying a busy career as a character actor when he auditioned for a role as an engineer in a new space adventure on NBC in 1966. A master of dialects from his early years in radio, he tried seven different accents.

"The producers asked me which one I preferred," Doohan recalled 30 years later. "I believed the Scot voice was the most commanding. So I told them, `If this character is going to be an engineer, you'd better make him a Scotsman.'"

The series, which starred William Shatner as Capt. James T. Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as the enigmatic Mr. Spock, attracted an enthusiastic following of science fiction fans, especially among teenagers and children, but not enough ratings power. NBC canceled it after three seasons.

When the series ended in 1969, Doohan found himself typecast as Montgomery Scott, the canny engineer with a burr in his voice. In 1973, he complained to his dentist, who advised him: "Jimmy, you're going to be Scotty long after you're dead. If I were you, I'd go with the flow."

"I took his advice," said Doohan, "and since then everything's been just lovely."

RIP, Scotty

My wife met him once in a grocery store. He hit on her while he signed an autograph for me. Nice man.

He'll be missed.

I was so sad when I saw this. First Bones, now Scotty.

I hate to see these wonderful, colorful people leave us - but Heaven' is richer because of them.

Godspeed, James Doohan. You meant so much to so many and you helped provide a lovely vision of a future that I hope mankind achieves.

Very sad news. He will be missed.

I thought he was very talented, and one of his unique talents was doing voiceovers. He could do several accents (including a Scot accent, of course), and did a lot of voices in the Star Trek Animated Series.

Yes he will be dearly missed here. when ever he played his character from Star Trek. I used to think when I was younger that I would be like him in some way or another in my field of choice. And to be able to do the things that he did when he was in the engineering room there. If its okay with everyone here maybe we can all take a moment iof silence and just think of the what he did contributed to star trek in his own way. I do realized he may not be a part of tron in anyway. But he did have something with the star trek. But the Star trek Culture has brought to everyone of us here a little something for us to remember.
