Well, all....

From what I see at home, I experience SEVERE croppage on my TV with the widescreen DVD.

Here are some comparisons:

TV Example:

PSP example:

TV Example:

PSP example:

That's two seperate TV's and DVD players. Anyone else confirm/deny that this is also what they see?

I'm not positive, but I don't think the DVD gets cropped when you play it on your computer. It seems the correct dimensions to me. But yes, it looks a bit clipped on your TV images.

And TRON looks so freakin' cool on that PSP!

Todd,

You are correct. In comparisons to my PC, the cropping does not occur. So it's a failure of the TV, not the DVD

Also, I did try it on another TV and DVD player and had the same results with the TV. Croppage. Only on the PC and PSP did the cropping not occur.

That tends to happen with CRT based TVs due to overscan. There's a great article (with example images) available here.

I've got to take a look at this on my LCD in the bedroom. It's HD ready, so I think I get the right format from the DVD.

I finally get my hands on a copy tomorrow. It's waiting in my mail at home.

I'll give a full comparison to my HD TV later in the week.

Wow, those screenshots on the PSP look so cool. I don't have the PSP, but if enough decent games come out for it that I like and it drops in price, I may consider getting one.

Portable Tron = awesome!

TRON UMD Review

on Sunday, July, 03, 2005 11:39 PM
I was looking around the internet today and found this review of the TRON UMD format disc. Thought it was well balanced despite that annoying "it's so old" attitude so many morons like to portray. Check it out anyway.

Re: TRON UMD REVIEW

but it felt more like a history lesson on early computer animation for me than a real movie.

Huh? It has all the elements of a great movie. The evil villain, the hero that saves the world, great special effects and a very tight story that has many deep levels to it.

Think of it as Matrix Lite…

Uhm... no. Think of Matrix as TRON Lite. TRON came first.

While the action scenes such as the Light Cycles were really banal

ba•nal ( P ) Pronunciation Key (b-nl, bnl, b-näl)
adj.
Drearily commonplace and often predictable; trite

Excuse me? That's the classic scene from TRON. The lightcycles were COMPLETELY original and absolutely intense. Speed, lethality! What more could you want? Jeez!!!

The soundtrack, when it’s not heavy on the Casio keyboard, is really really great

It's a Moog. *sigh* Bet this guy can't even pronounce Moog correctly.

What I hated was the ending…it ends as soon as the good news is announced. I get the feeling the movie wasn’t interested at all with the plot outside the computer universe, and simply ended it when all the scenes in the mainframe were over. I guess that’s a good thing, since the “real world” scenes were not all that great to begin with.

?? The movie PLOT was about liberating a slave race from its captors. It was about learning that there's more to life than just retribution for lost wages, but also that there are always people at stake, even in the computer world. It's about standing up for what's RIGHT and not taking the sh** handed to us daily anymore!!!

The "real world" scenes were fantastic. The reviewer obviously does not work in the "real world" or he probably would have recognized the conversations between Dillinger and Dr. Gibbs as being apropos today.

That (and a few more instances) had me thinking, “Neato!”

*rolls eyes*

Folks, I looked and looked and found no storyboards whatsoever.

OK, finally. A good point. I too could not find these. I guess it wasn't just me.

For the rest who haven’t seen Tron, well…all I can say is I found it pretty amusing.

Chimps in clothes are "amusing". TRON is a classic work of art that belongs with any "classic" film.. of any age. Anyone who can recognize that can enjoy this film. Anyone else is just doomed to just appreciating it's "kitsch", and I do feel sorry for you.

4/5

Really? After that review? I don’t think he really appreciated the movie enough to give it 4/5.

"The soundtrack, when it's not heavy on the Casio keyboard, is really really great and, in a way, hypnotic."

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!

He had to say Casio. How uneducational of him. At least he enjoyed the soundtrack the same way I did. It is indeed quite hypnotic at times.
