Well, my number one 80's band of all time of course has to be Oingo Boingo. Their early 80's stuff was very groundbreaking. Energy driven, full of horns and drums, it was brash, unpredictible, controversial, and set the stage for popular ska bands of the 90's. Starting about 1985 Boingo started to become a little more mainstream and although Dead Man's Party and Boi-Ngo don't have quite the drive and feel of their first three, they still maintained a consistant quality of songwriting and energy all throughout the 80's. If you haven't ever listened to them, give them a try, I think you'll be happy.

Other bands I liked in the 80's were:

* Duran Duran
* The YellowJackets
* Depeche Mode
* Genesis
* Peter Gabriel
* The Police (for a little bit)
* Kraftwerk

and more....

For me, musically, the 80's were all about Michael Jackson, Duran Duran and Prince.

I know the whole 80's music thing has started, but I'm not done with general 80's stuff yet.

Boingo_Buzzard Wrote:...but I DID do the Compute! magazines because they gave you the code for Commodore 64 games... remember? All you had to do was type in the lines of basic code. It's how I learned how to type. And remember the machine language code, with the check digits at the end to make sure you put it in all right? Man... I would spend HOURS putting in the code from those magazines.... and if there was a bug you didn't find out until the next magazine!!!! LOL!

I did that too!

Oh man - TRON-Sector really is a great meeting place for all us nerds-o-the-80's!

I also spent hours typing code from a magazine in to my Commodore 64 computer - usually without the check digits. If I mistyped something and the program (usually a simple game or graphic thing) didn't work properly - it was endless proofing and checking my typing against the magazine. There were times I'd end up with a useless program that never worked... after investing HOURS of my (at the time) very slow typing skills.

Today, we just download whatever we want. Back in the day... our options were BBS services for some very basic but fun online games, and of course Compute! magazine... along with a lot of typing to unlock the coolness of what was inside.

MutoidMan Wrote:Anybody remember the live-action shooting games like Mad Dog McCree, Who Shot Johnny Rock? and Crime Patrol? I fed those machines well, I can tell you.

I have only vague memories of Mad Dog McCree and Who Shot Johnny Rock... but I remember playing Crime Patrol... at least I think I do. It was a cop shooter game, right? You played the roll of a cop and had to shoot all the bad guys without shooting the pedestrions or other cops. I think that was the game, anyway.

MutoidMan Wrote:BTW, Knight Rider was awesome - who didn't want their own KITT?

Yep! Never missed an episode! Such a cool show!

MutoidMan Wrote:..so was The Greatest American Hero...

I LOVED that show! It only lasted two seasons, right? I thought that show was awesome! Poor old Ralph... was that his name? Oh man - my memory is failing me. Anyway he never could fly very good. He'd usually crash land and then say "damn" - I remember thinking "damn" was a bad "swear word" back then. Remember the episode where those aliens gave him another Super Suit Instructional Book - and then he shrunk himself and when he made himself big again, the book stayed small, and was lost again! And old good Maxwell - all business he was. And Ralph's wife was played by... oh - what's her name... oh yeah - Connie Celica (sp?) - I had a big crush on her back then.

That was a great show! And too short lived. Remember the theme song being at the top of the charts for a while too?

I also liked Airwolf... Max Headroom... and Manimal. And practically everything else mentioned so far.

Yep! Automan was very high on my list of favorite shows at the time! And it disappeared so damn fast!

Max Headroom - one of my FAVORITE TV shows of all time! I even went as Max one Halloween back in 1986!

Manimal - watched that one too! It wasn't on for long if memory serves. I can only remember a short sequence of the guy changing from an elephant back in to himself. That's my whole memory of the show.

Airwolf - watched that for the first season or two, then lost track of it. Loved it though - and the cool Airwolf chopper!

Ok, some 80's music chat.

I was never really a hard core music fan who had to rush out and buy the greatest new albums or songs. But back in the 80's I generally listened to pop music, and some metal.

Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer was and still is one of my favorites. By that, I'm talking more about the song AND video together, though the song alone is a good one as well. The video is really what sucked me in though. I'm a big fan of strange visuals and animation - and that video was packed with BOTH! I've tinkered with stop motion animation myself, and I remember recording the video on TV and playing it back frame by frame to learn more about animation movement and timing.

I listened to a lot of Weird Al back then too. I thought he was a comedic genius and LOVED his songs... often more than the songs he parodied! And many people may not be aware, but Weird Al has some GREAT original songs as well. That's right! He does a lot more than just parody other artists' songs!

Some of my favorite Weird Al original songs (in no particular order):

Mr. Frump in his Iron Lung
One More Minute
Germs
Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota
Got a Boogie
ALL his Polka's (they're not really original material, but FUN)
Dog Eat Dog
Albuquerque (this one grows on ya)
Generic Blues
Happy Birthday
Christmas at Ground Zero
Nature Trail To Hell
Such a Groovy Guy
Buckingham Blues
Harvey the Wonder Hamster (all 20 seconds of it!)

Well, there's a LOT of great Weird Al original material out there... or so I think!

Oh - I forgot to mention my mobile phone!

My mobile phone plays the Ghostbusters theme when I get incoming calls. And the schedule reminder plays the TRON arcade game theme!

I've also got excellent recreations of Ms. Pac Man and Galaga on my phone too.

So I got my 80's right on my phone too!

Today, we just download whatever we want.

Which is funny, because only recently was I able to download off of some site (I forget which one) an actual WORKING copy of some program I spent HOURS and HOURS trying to debug and get working right and never was able to. I think it was called "shutterbug". I was finally... after 15 years able to play it on my C64 emulator. What joy!

They had pretty much all of the compute! magazine programs for download. I'll see if I can find it again if you're interested.

Cool. I'm a big Weird Al fan too. I have ALL his CDs. And he's still putting them out. Are you up on his current stuff? I really like "Hardware Store". I've even got my boys listening to him and my wife thinks we are all crazy.

Well...

Maybe a little.

Um...

Ok ok ok ok ok.

I called it a phone.

But I was...

You see, I need to...

You know, I needed to make sense to people who still insist in calling communicators "phones" or "cells".

You know... yeah.

You'll buy that, right?

Oops - I have to run... my communicator is playing Ghostbusters!

Cool - a fellow Weird Al fan!

Actually, I really don't listen to music much these days and I've kind of lost track of Weird Al's musical comedic genius as well...

Woo hoo! My communicator just played the TRON arcade theme! That's my reminder that Enterprise will be on in half an hour! One of the VERY FEW shows I'll sit and watch these days.

My last Weird Al CD was... damn, I'm blanking now - I forgot the name of the album. It's the one with Albuquerque and Germs and All About the Pentiums on it.

But I can still sing along by memory, most of his earlier (prior to that album) songs

Hell yeah!

You know - I had a Commodore emulator a few years back. It was REALLY cool... but it started working in slow motion shortly after using it. I have no idea why either. But for a while, I enjoyed playing some of my favorite Commodore games (mostly just arcade ports to the Commodore)

What Commodore emulator are you using? Can you post a link to their site? I don't even remember which one I used some time ago... I think it was Frodo... no wait, that was an Atari emulator. No, I don't remember the name.

Todd,

The website that hosted those files is long since gone. I may have one or two around here somewhere.

By the way, I was using Frodo for the emulator. I like that it runs in a small window. I have always had good luck with it and usually have to slow it DOWN rather than having it run to slow

For roms, I suggest here:
