TheReelTodd - I once got about 35,000 points on the Atari 2600 Pac-Man. Not sure if you remember how painstakingly slow it was to even get 10,000 points; 35,000 took me a while. Anyways, I thought you might like this MP3

Also turned Space Invaders over on the Atari 2600 like 10 times in a game which I believe made either 100,000 or 1,000,000 points; can't remember.
Here are more of those Atari 2600 sounds:

There were a few decent ports of arcade games on the Atari 2600.
Space Invaders, Joust and Ms. Pacman were all pretty true to the originals. Notable attempts that were not quite on but still fun were Centipede,Missle Command,Warlords and Asteroids.
Collosal failures were the aformentioned Pac Man and Donkey Kong and Defender.
My whole center of the universe in the 80's revolved around Video Games,Dungeon's And Dragons and Ninjas.
And then when I turned 14, girls.

And now that I'm 29 and married - it's back to video games!
Legit, I hate that new generations of children will NEVER know the greatness that was taking a $5 to the arcade and playing all day long. Hell, for the games you still find, that $5 would give you five turns!
But seriously, watch the opening of Tron in Flynn's Arcade. That was a real deal. People gathered at arcades to see people beat high scores and to hang out with your friends while playing all the newest games. I remember when Dragon's Lair first hit the arcade scene! One arcade I frequented actually installed three TV screens over top of the machine so people in the area could watch without crowding the player - it was THAT HUGE!!!
I miss the days of the arcade, and while I love my home console systems, I can't help but feel sad when I realize that THEY are the reason arcades are dying out now! Why spend quarters in the mall when I can just spend $50 and play the game as much as I want in the comfort of my own home.
But kids in the new generation will never know that thrill. They'll also never know about Hostess Fruit Pie cartoon strips in the new issue of Spider-Man or The Fantastic Four. Nor will they know that Big Macs and Quarter Pounders should come in styrofoam containers for stacking games at McDonald's birthday parties.
I miss the 1980s, and weep for all others who never grew up during them like we did. Legit.

Yep - I remember exactly how slow it is racking up points on Atari Pac Man. At only 1 point per dot... er, dash and a max of only 160 points for that 4th ghost, the point meter was a slow crawl. Impressive score, both on Atari Pac Man and Space Invaders.
Hey - did you do the Space Invaders double-shot trick? You know, where you turn on the game with the reset button held down? That started the game with the ability to fire TWO shots at a time instead of just one. Still, I never even came close to what you got on Atari Space Invaders.
You know what though - Atari Space Invaders was pretty close to the arcade version, whereas Atari Pac Man was more like an inbred cousin of the arcade version. Thanks for the audio links - a sweet trip down memory lane!
And the Saturday morning cartoon "Dungeons and Dragons" - I used to watch that too! And Knight Rider was MUST see TV for me! Transformers were cool too, though I didn't catch that as often.

Yeah - those were some good Atari games. Many an hour I spent on each of them.
Defender - I actually enjoyed the Atari version of that and played it often. It wasn't a great likeness of the arcade version, but it still got a lot of game play from me.

YES! An arcade at a local mall did the same here! That was the biggest game since Space Invaders originally hit and then Pac Man a few years later. It got TV coverage, and was all the buzz with my friends. Not to mention - it looked so damn cool! I totally sucked at it though. BUT, I enjoyed those brief moments playing the game each time. I even remember the Saturday morning cartoon based on the game.

Yeah, that Atari 2600 version of Pac-Man was a bit of a let down when it came out. So much excitement for it. My parents put in a "rain check" for it at a local retailer so I could get it when it first came out I still remember being there to do the "rain check" thing.
I read somewhere on the net a couple months back that the lead programmer for the 2600 Pac-Man version got treated poorly by Atari and that's why he didn't do a very good port of it. I tried looking for that internet blurb last night before posting, but couldn't find it >:[ There were more details to it: like he wasn't going to get paid much by Atari, or didn't get royalties or something. Interesting blurb if you can find it. I wish I could remember what it said exactly. Sorry!
RE: Atari Space Invaders, my brother and parents remember watching me play that game for a long time... like hours or something. I wish we had a recording of me doing that feat. My dad wrote my PacMan and Space Invaders high scores in the respective games' manuals and put the dates on them. I hope I can find them in my garage!! If I find them, I'll maybe scan them in for "proof" -- my dad's "Certificate of Authenticity," if you will

Ahhh... that makes me think of the Mc DLTs. My favorite all time Mc'Donalds hamburger. Keep the hot side hot and the cold side cold... remember those? I think those were out sometime in the 80's. Anyone remember when McDonalds introduced those and when they took them away? I wish they'd bring them back...

P.S. Hey... I was right it was the 80's. Check out this link:

P.S. #3 Just found this:

McDonald’s introduced the McDLT sandwich on November 4, 1985. Still not sure when they were taken away.

I actually managed to finish it. Used to be, then, that I had the patterns memorized so I could do the whole game without losing a Dirk. I just recently got Dragon's Lair 3D for the XBox for nostalgia purposes and actually was pleasantly surprised. It was fun and looked great.

Hey - if we can confirm your dad's handwriting, then it's as good as official!
Do you remember Pitfall? There was an Official Pitfall Harry Fan Club. To join it, you had to send in a photograph of your TV screen after achieving a score of 20,000 or higher. I had my Dad take a shot of the screen when I got eighty-thousand something, but I never sent it in. I got a higher score later - 108,652 (I don't know how or why that score stuck in my head) and took a very blurry Kodak instant photograph of the screen, but it didn't turn out very well. The numbers were too blurry to read, but you could clearly see that I did get in to the hundreds of thousands by the look of the score. I never sent that in either though.
Wow - Kodak instant cameras (like Polaroid's). Who remembers those? Kodak got sued by Polaroid and had to stop production on the cameras. They offered $50.00 worth of stock if you turned in your camera... if memory serves correctly. That's another 80's memory right there!

I remember hearing about the patterns in the game, but I could never master them. I used to watch others play the game and try and see how they moved the joystick so I could learn when to move, but I never got any good at it. Still, I thought that game was cooler than anything!

YES! I clearly remember those... AND the TV commercials for them!
You get the hot side HOT! ** steam, steam **
You get the cold side cold ** slice, chop! **
Mc DLT Mc DLT!
I don't think I ever had one, but I remember the TV spots about them and even getting that commercial jingle stuck in my head... which it is stuck in there again right now - some 20 years later!

I remember having a marathon competition to determine the king of Atari 2600 Pac-Man in which my dad and I played the same game for hours, each of us turning over the score until I finally beat him. Man, that was crazy!
I never did finish Dragon's Lair in the arcade, but I did finish Space Ace! It took lots of quarters to learn how but I did it.
Years later I bought Space Ace and then Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp on DVD-ROM for my PC. I love playing these games. I'll pick up Dragon's Lair soon, thus rounding out my Don Bluth game collection.
Anybody remember the live-action shooting games like Mad Dog McCree, Who Shot Johnny Rock? and Crime Patrol? I fed those machines well, I can tell you.
TheReelTodd, there was a club for almost every Activision game as I recall, and if you took the picture of your qualifying high score and sent it in you would get a patch signifying your accomplishment.
In fact, I did a little searching and found a site that shows pictures of many of the patches: Activision Patches at AtariAge
Who here was in the Atari Club and got the Atari Age magazine?
There were games that were only available to club members, such as Crazy Climber, which I ordered and had a lot of fun playing.
BTW, Knight Rider was awesome - who didn't want their own KITT? - so was The Greatest American Hero, and Dungeons & Dragons was such a cool cartoon... I got my dad to watch it with me one Saturday, and he was hooked! He watched it every Saturday with me after that.
Ah, the 80's... "We are, after all, not God." - Cmdr. J. J. Adams "C is for cookie. That's good enough for me." - Cookie Monster "If money is the root of all evil, I'd like to be a bad, bad man." - Huey Lewis & the News
Most recent PC game collection update: 04/12/2012. Check it out! |

My ADD kicked in after playing that game for about 15 minutes or so. In fact I used to play the Atari 2600 for HOURS at a time, but keep cycling through my carts. I rarely could focus on a game for more than 10-15 minutes at a time. The exception was Raiders Of The Lost Ark which, of course, you had to play all in one sitting.. being there was no SAVE available. Also Adventure kept my attention somewhat. |

Which is odd because my memory has always sucked (although it's gotten worse with age).... the fact I could commit all those patterns to memory still astounds me.

I didn't do the Atari one, but I DID do the Compute! magazines because they gave you the code for Commodore 64 games... remember? All you had to do was type in the lines of basic code. It's how I learned how to type. And remember the machine language code, with the check digits at the end to make sure you put it in all right? Man... I would spend HOURS putting in the code from those magazines.... and if there was a bug you didn't find out until the next magazine!!!! LOL!
However... my very first computer ever was the TI/994A.

Greatest American Hero ruled. Robert Culp was great as the dog biscuit eating detective. Remember when Reagan was shot by Hinkley, and Katt's character was actually NAMED Hinkley. They bleeped out his name for a few shows and then changed it... to Henley or something.
