Cool idea, Astrozombbie!!!

I LOVED the 80's! What a great decade it was. Maybe the technology wasn't as cool as it is today, but it was a fun decade that spawned a lot of great stuff.

One of my favorite 80's memories... aside from TRON, is Max Headroom!



Some people were just annoyed with his glitchy, stuttering antics, but I could never get enough!

That was my favorite TV show of the late 80's - the short lived Max Headroom 1-hour TV series that lasted from fall 1987 to spring of 1988.

And of course, who could forget the Coke commercials of the mid 80's that featured Max as their cyber spokesman!

I never got a chance to see his Cinemax talk show though Didn't have Cinemax at the time.

But that computer generated, wise-cracking, TV box-o-fun always had be grinning ear to ear.

I was probably more fascinated with the idea of a computer-generated personality than his wise cracks. I even went as Max Headroom for Halloween in 1986. I have a picture of that somewhere... must find that some time. I was actually fooled by the whole concept too. I really thought he was computer animated! I didn't find out he was a guy made-up to look computer animated until reading an article in a magazine later on. These days, it would be no problem at all to computer animate him looking like that, but back then, it was more economical to simulate the look.

Any other Max Headroom fans out there?

I like Max Headroom. It was a little too sharp for it's time though... kind of like a certain movie we all know and love

I also think Matt Frewer is a great actor although I havent seen him in much lately.

Well, Max Headroom was ahead of it's time - about 20 minutes ahead of it's time... or something like that Even though the American version of the show was not as dark as the original Brittish two hour TV movie, it was still a bit much for most audiences I think. That, and like I said earlier, some people just didn't care for "Max". Conceptually, I always thought the show was genious! I loved the whole society it was set in and cyber-punk themes. A global market dominated by network television, TV's without "off switches"... and they were provided to the needy. Credit fraud was considered a more serious offense than murder. The body banks and those willing to sell their friends to them (often in pieces) for some cash.

Like TRON, that show was indeed ahead of it's time. I thought so anyway.

I have many of the episodes on VHS tape still. The pilot episode (American version) I can't find though. That one has been MIA for more than 10 years I'm sure. How I'd love to see that again.

I wish they'd put Max Headroom (the 1-hour TV drama series) on DVD. I'd buy that faster than a bilpvert can make a fat guy explode!

Matt Frewer has done some other TV since Max Headroom. He appeared on an episode of ST:TNG as a time-traveling con man. He also starred in some sci-fi investigator drama (forget the name off hand) in the mid 90's, but it didn't last long. He unfortunately starred in one of the worst films of all time - The Lawnmower Man 2. That didn't help his career at all. I haven't seen him in anything in recent years myself. Damn shame - he's a really good actor.

I used to PLAY Laser Tag!

I was pretty good at it too. I had the vest, helmet, pistol, and riffle. I still have two riffles and a helmet... and the vest somewhere. The pistols have been missing for some time. They're probably not in my possession anymore. Bummer.

I actually used the Laser Tag riffle in a visual FX demo back in 2000 - to simulate laser fire. Check it out: Visual FX Demo 2000 Yep - that's an official Laser Tag riffle!

I used to play Laser Tag in the late 80's with a couple of friends. GREAT fun!

And I used to watch Sledge Hammer as well. Another fun, and very short lived TV show. The dude was crazy, but he knew how to get the job done!

What memories it brings back!

Ahhhhh - the 80's - such a great time!

This brings up a big 80's thing - Pac Man!

Not just the arcade Pac Man... I mean Atari Pac Man.

I remember how excited I was to hear that Atari was working on a home version of the arcade hit Pac Man! What could be more fun than being able to play Pac Man in your own home, and without it gobbling up all your quarters?

Oh yeah - this was going to be totally AWESOME!

And then...

I saw my FIRST TV commercial featuring the long awaited Pac Man, Atari version...



What the hell was that?

Surely NOT Pac Man!

What?

They're actually advertising this... as something you might want to buy?

Um... do you see any resemblance?

Well, that was the feeling back then anyway - Atari totally butchered this great game.

Sure, I still got Atari Pac Man, and played it until my hands were sore.

It was the early 80's. We ALL played Atari Pac Man... and loved it... and complained about it... and still played it.

How many of you know... The Atari Pac Man Pattern?

You know - THE pattern? The pattern that if you follow it over and over and over and over, you can literally play the game FOREVER, so long as you don't mess up?

I'm sure many of you discovered that pattern that worked so well on level 6 - the most difficult Atari Pac Man setting, and the one I played most often.

As crappy as it was, I still play Atari Pac Man today from time to time, on an emulator. I still have my original 80's Atari 2600, and Atari Pac Man cart, but I'm too lazy to go hooking it all up. I play it now to enjoy a few moments from my childhood again. Or that's how it feels anyway.

But Pac Man - both arcade AND Atari are some VERY awesome 80's memories.

I even have a Tomy little electronic personal Pac Man game. It's a little dusty. Maybe I'll dust it off and take a picture. It wasn't quite as awesome as the arcade Pac Man, but still fun. It was the cheaper of the two popular personal Pac Man electronic games (but not the cooler of them).

Todd, that's one of the coolest things I've ever seen! I can't believe you still have that and that it looks THAT good!

And seeing anyone reference Laser Tag Academy is GREAT!!! Draxon Dreer will get his yet! I always dug the theme song for that show!

I love the 80s. Plain and simple! Bring me arcades! Bring me Atari 2600 and 5200s! Bring me the original NES and R.O.B. the Robot! Bring me Laser Tag and Photon! Bring me Bravestarr, He-Man and Go-Bots! Bring me Transformers and G.I. Joe! Bring me Star Wars figures!




I miss you all SO MUCH!!! I miss the Mister T cartoon most of all. I pity the fool that don't love Mister T and Dozer, the dog with a mohawk. Literally - I pity you fools!

As a kid, I took VERY good care of my toys... well, at least the ones I didn't take apart to see how they worked.

I've got Tomy Pac Man, King Man (Donkey Kong like game), Merlin (from the 70's), Tomy TRON, 3D Planet Zenon... and more. I'm actually blanking right now - I can't remember some of them! Only Pac Man and TRON are not stuffed in storage boxes right now. I used to have the official electronic hand-held game of Space Invaders! But... a friend relieved me of that classic gem some years ago as he decided it should be his and snuck it out. I didn't realize it was taken until some time later - just thought I had misplaced it. If it had remained in my possession, it too would still be in good condition and working order, I'm sure. I miss that game. There were other cooler Space Invaders electronic games, but I loved mine and played it very often.
