If you had to list your top 10 video games of all time, right now, what would they be? Here's mine (subject to change ):
10) Impossible Mission (C64)
A classic game on the commodore 64, game impressive graphics and gameplay. Stands up today as a notable game. Took me forever to solve, but I did
9) Half Life (PS2 and PC)
Impressive and innovative graphics, the gameplay and puzzles rocked. I did not fully appreciate this game until I played it on the PS2, but began to memorize the layout of the Black Mesa complex and all its intricacies.
8) The Spyro Series (PS)
Awwwwww.. cmon.. How cute is a little baby dragon? Plus the games friggin’ rocked. The first three ruled on the original Playstation. I haven’t played the two now available on the PS2.
7) The Tekken Series (Multi Platform)
Innovative and creative combat. Tekken 3 on the original Playstation STILL to this day can hold its own in music and graphics on any fighting game out. Just awesome.
6) Medievil (PS)
Humor, great music , and great gameplay.
I dunno, this game stuck me and kept me. I hear it’s being released on the PSP. I can’t wait for that.
5) Golden Sun (GBA)
Wow… an awesome RPG on a handheld. Great music and story kept me addicted to this one all the way through.
4) Grand Theft Auto III (PS2)
What can I say? Ground breaking innovation in 3D gaming, totally immersing the player in a complete, total, and believable world. Controversial or not, you have to admit this game was awesome and was beyond belief.
3) Soul Reaver (PS)
A huge world to explore with a great soundtrack and awesome graphics. This was the best third person type game on the original Playstation in my opinion. The only shame being that the sequels paled in comparison.
2) Ico (PS2)
This was tough to make this second. It may possibly deserve first. An innovative visually STUNNING game, this one STILL to this day holds my attention. If you haven’t played this game do so NOW. It is beautiful and one of the few games I have actually cried at when finishing it.
And Number One.............
(drumroll)
1) Final Fantasy VII (PS)
The KING of all RPG’s forever. This was my first introduction to the Japanese style RPG and I think was absolutely ground breaking for its time. It set the tone for all future PRG’s. The graphics and music are top notch and when I completed this game I truly felt as though I had ended a chapter of my life, it was THAT integrated into me. It’s somewhat outdated now, but Final Fantasy VII will be forever number one in my books.
OK, since this is a TRON newsgroup I know I will be chastised for not including Tron, but I did not include any coin op games because I do not, personally, feel that a coin op can encompass a great gaming experience in the time they want you to spend 25 cents. I just NOW started playing Tron 2.0 on the X-Box so it hasn’t made my list yet, but it may
Notable mentions:
* Rez: (PS2) Awesome graphics (Like Tron!)
* Wipeout Fusion: (PS2) (great gameplay, grahics and music)
* Adventure (Atari 1600) . Still fun to this day
* Raiders Of The Lost Ark (Atari 2600), pissed me off all to holy hell, but I finally finished it WITHOUT the benefit of Internet walkthroughs!!!!
*Warioland 3 (GBA) Great Game if you like platformers!

Oh you are so wrong about getting great gameplay from your .25.
Battlezone
Robotron 2084
Pac Man
1942
Xevious
There are other good examples too, but these games gave me hours of gaming pleasure and as I got good at them, .25 meant 30 to 40 minutes of play.
I could make a night out of 1.00 back in the 80's. I have MAME on all of my home systems so I can revisit these wonderful games whenever I want. Not to mention the TRON and Discs of TRON arcade machines sitting in my garage calling my name! DaveTRON

Hehhe, You may be right there. I never continuously popped the coins in anything other than Dragon's Lair. ... because I HAD to finish it! Jeez I think I spent at least $50 on that game alone.
However I do have fond memories of "Track and Field" from Konami and also Spy Hunter.
But for me truly great gameplay has to take me totally from this world to another one for just a little bit ...

Here are some of my favorites. This is an ever-morphing list as I keep coming across old C64 and Amiga 500 titles that I loved. Let's just say I have "many" top 10 games of all time I've thought so much about these classic games, I'm spacing when I try to think about newer titles; but I've thrown a couple of those in here. Dang, I've played so many games in my life it's not even funny.
I think of all the games I've played over the past 25 years, and I've played many -- we'll just leave it at that -- Thief 2 is my #1. That may change if I think about it more... but as of this second it's #1 in my book.
1. Thief 2: The Metal Age (PC) - Thief games still set the bar with regards to enemy AI, imo. And the stealth gameplay is unrivaled. Don't read anything about this game before getting it. NOTHING. The less you know about what it's about or its characters, or anything, the better. Heck, don't even look at the back of the box. I like Thief 2 better than the latest Thief: Deadly Shadows. And like it better than Thief 1. I started with Thief 2, not Thief 1, and I'm glad I did. Even though Thief 2 was made in the late '90s, the graphics aren't that bad at all as it's all about shadows and gameplay with this one. I've re-installed this game into my system more times than any other game -- just to get a taste of it every now and then. Just get it for $5 or $10 and play it -- with the lights out. With headphones on, even better. The only thing you need to know is if you have ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and need to Rambo your way through levels, or need machine guns and futuristic environments, you may not have the patience for this one. If you have patience and play it how it's meant to be played, I think you'll be impressed. Note: While installing, pay attention the hints it gives you on the install screens.
Now, these rank high, but it's hard to say if they're in my Top 10. I have so many games that I consider 'greats':
Faery Tale Adventure (Amiga 500) - Amazingly large, continuous world to roam around in. Fun adventure, overhead perspective. It took a long time before I played a game that had a world that felt as large as this one and had a similar gameplay style as this one (isometric?). Most other games for a long time had noticeable load zones where you had to leave one map and go onto another one. Not this one. - http://zorro.kicks-ass.org/classics/faerytale.htm
Age of Empires (PC) - I've probably played AoE II more than the first AoE, but I liked both. When I play the first incarnation now, it's kind've slow and boring, but I loved it when it was new. I've played a lot of AoE II. Even though it can see computer AI patterns after a while, it's stil fun to conquer other civilizations. I'm pretty much done with it now, but it's probably in my Top 10.
Zyll (IBM PC, Jr.) - Text based adventure game, yet real-time action. A good mix. A step above Zork in that respect. Could also play side-by-side (competitively or cooperatively) with someone else (split screen) -- using two different parts of the keyboard. Very cool and a lot of fun for the time. - http://members.chello.at/theodor.lauppert/games/zyll.htm / http://www.freeoldies.com/download.php3?game=Zyll
Defender of the Crown (C64/Amiga 500) - Sweet game back then. The recent PS2 reincarnation kind've sucked, imo.
Moebius: The Orb of Celestial Harmony (C64) - Fun adventure game. Weird... not the greatest graphics in the world... but interesting to get to know - http://c64.mobygames.com/game/shots/p,27/gameId,1623/gameShotId,88827/
Bruce Lee (C64) - A sound that's used in the movie TRON is also actually in this game. I love it! I think it's one of the noises a light blip makes on the wall in the background of the "Vacate entry port, program!" scene. I think of it every time I watch TRON. I'm a total geek, eh?

I agree, as far as my Top 10... it might actually be there. I didn't play any other adventure game for a long, long time that rivaled it in terms of detail and implementation. There's too many great games that I've played to even consider a top 10 list, but here goes...
10) Final Fantasy VI -- Played this on a emulator. Now I own the actual game in FFAnthology. It's really good game to try out. ^^
9) Final Fantasy VIII -- My first FF game. XP I'd get in fights with FF7 fanboys... no, really. Some of the extreme fanboys were angry that I got FF8. I don't understand them... (I didn't get a console until 2001! I got FF8 for pc in 1999. Then when Silver gave me his PSX, I finally bought FF7 and FF8 for psx...)
8) Gorf -- I had to fit this game somewhere in here. Crazy C64 port....
7) Final Fantasy X and X-2 -- The first Final Fantasy to have a sequel. I don't understand why people hate Tidus. I liked him. X-2 was sheer fun! Girl power~!
6) Xenosaga -- Precedsor (sp?) to Xenogears... but the story needs to be tweaked.
5) Devil May Cry -- I'm not sure how to describe this, but the game kicks butt. o_o Again, for PS2. (Seeing a pattern here?)
4) Kamatari Damacy -- It's like crack! Kind of. A game for PS2 and it's so much fun rolling everything up with a kamatari.
3) Shadow Hearts 1 and 2-- really awesome series for PS2. The story is very well connected! ...only if I knew what was going on in Koudelka (the first in the series)... doh!
2) Tron 2.0 Killer App for gbasp -- Need to finish this!
1) Tron 2.0 -- I just loved this so much. I would just stare at the opening credits and going "Shinyyyyyy~"
1) Xenogears -- PSX game. The storyline ... wow. Just incredible.
(yes, I have two 1 spots. :P) Most of the games I play are usually on PS2. ... you know, I should really give Silver his psx back now that I finally bought the LAST psone. *whistles* Kia: Cool. I'm a infamous mythological perfect User.

I was playing that right before I got my X-Box. I did like it, but the enourmous cut scenes were sometimes too long in my opinion.
4) Kamatari Damacy -- It's like crack! Kind of. A game for PS2 and it's so much fun rolling everything up with a kamatari. |
I have heard lots of good things about this one. I would like to pick it up (hehheh)

Zaxxon used to REALLY piss me off because something was wrong with my depth perception or something and I would always fly straight into a wall when I was SURE I had it lined up perfectly. I know there was an elevation gague also, but I still would goof it up.
Zaxxon is the only video game I got in trouble with in an arcade for abusing it out of frustration :P

I think Lunar Lander was actually the first video game I ever encountered. As I recall, it was in the lobby of one of the local movie theaters.
I think it's still a challenging game today.
