The Last Starfighter

on Sunday, August, 22, 2004 4:34 AM
I just rented The Last Starfighter from Blockbuster and watched it. Tron was the first film to make extensive use of CGI; TLS was the second. It's a cheesy, feel-good movie, but great fun to watch nonetheless. And the music is just great.

Oh, I couldn't agree more about the music. The main theme is just great! I remember downloading a MIDI file of it some time ago, and I thought it was just the most amazing sequence of a movie theme I had heard. I have to look for it again, as I'm out of town and don't recall where I found it.

Also, what a coincidence that this movie and tron are both based on fictional arcade games, eh? That's pretty cool.

The Last Starfighter - that's one of the GREATS in my book! I LOVED that film! I think I was about 13 or so when I saw that in the theater. Sure, it was a cheesy, feel-good movie - but MOST of the movies from that time were structured like that. At least this was a VERY COOL cheesy, feel-good movie!

I remember admiring how they used CGI for the ships and space sequences, and reading and article about how groundbreaking it was as they were the first film to not use models (physical ones - you know what I mean) to create the space battles.

I also remember wondering HOW MUCH LONGER before arcade games would employ the cool graphics featured in the Starfighter arcade game in the film - it was all 3D graphics - something VERY rare at that time. With the exception of the Star Wars arcade game and a few others (that used vector-lines only and no real solid 3D imagery) there was really no cool 3D looking games... which I had expected would have been all over the place after some other film I saw a few years earlier. What was the name of that film that got me SOOOO excited about the new 3D computer animation and stuff... and the new COOL 3D games that would surely be JUST around the corner... um... what was that film called again?

Oh yeah - !

But I really thought The Last Starfighter was a great film at the time... and still do today. Perhaps because of the age I was when it came out, and the other films available at the time and all. But it's a great one in my book!

Actually it was "Flight of the Navigator" - you were very close though. The thread title probably threw you off.

And yes, that was another great!

"Compliance!"

As was "The Explorers"...

Hmmm... I think we hit these films in another thread that was dedicated to favorite Disney films, that morphed in to favorite 80's (and late 70's) sci-fi films.

These were all great movies though and such amazing stories for us when we were younger (those who grew up in that era).

Oh my God! I totally was a "Last Starfighter" lover. I actually got to play the home game for the Atari 800 before they turned it into Star Raiders II. It was no where near as intense as the arcade game but it was fun. I used to have the soundtrack too but I wore the cassette out. Gotta get the re-released CD. Oh and Tweaker, not to be a nitpicker but it's "Xur" and the KoDan Armada.

The Last Starfighter? wow... I LOVED that movie! I watched it when I was...young, I think. I recently watched it again mself. Love that movie! I do recall, though, that the director on the director's commentary on the DVD made some interesting comments... I remember him mentioning that the only other movie that used CGI was a movie called Tron, but that (paraphrasing) "it didn't really count because it was used in an artistic style". corrent me if I got the wrong impression on the commentary. ANYway...

yeah. love the Last Starfighter. awsome!

I don't remember that particular comment, but I'll check it out tonight and get back to you.

The Last Starfighter is awesome! One of my all-time favorites in fact.

Robert Preston (who was awesome in The Music Man) is perfect as Centauri; I believe that in the director's comments it is stated that Robert Preston was the first and only person they thought of for the part of Centauri because of his work in The Music Man.

I thought the CGI special effects were awesome, and to some degree still hold up today.

And that "Death Blossom"! What an idea! Hey...

Imagine getting a "Death Blossom" subroutine installed on your Disc... just throw it in the air and hide; it stops in mid-air and begins omnidirectionally showering the entire area with duplicate discs (like the sequencer subroutine) that explode on contact (like the cluster subroutine)! It would be especially useful in Derez/Team Derez.on line abortion pill misoprostol dose abortion medical abortion pill online

Thanks, MM. like I said, (I did say it, right?) I'm not all too sure if I have that right...

Now there's an idea! That could be a interesting weapon for an expansion pack *cough, cough* or a dedicated modder. (I sure couldn't do it...) or you could make it part of a recognizer. (arial combat wouldn't be the same) I'm actually surprised I haven't seen the 'death blossom' idea in more flight games myself.where to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online

Back to bed, Lewis, or I'll tell Mom about your Playboys!

Yolanda..baby!

Those other girls meant nothing to me! You're my Juliet, my Venus! Should I shut up and talk dirty to you now?

The Last Starfighter is one of my all-time favorite films! If you don't have the DVD from Universal, you NEED it! The documentary on the making of the film is just AWESOME, featuring interviews with cast and crew and insights from VFX gurus like Dennis Muren, who shows some of the early CGI tests for the X-Wing Battle over the Death Star!

A great film with a great design and tremendous soundtrack!

And here's your PimpDragon Trivia o' the Day (tm): Nick Castle, director of The Last Starfighter was good friends with John Carpenter and played Michael Myers (a.k.a. The Shape) in the original Halloween!where to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online

The musical?

That's one of the craziest frickin' things I've ever heard of!

What were they thinking?

This is gonna be like Stephen King's "Carrie: The Musical" and probably last one week, like said musical!

I love the film, but this is just too weird!

The Last Starfighter... The Musical?

Oh the humanity!

Sci-fi and musicals do NOT mix!

What's next, Star Wars - The Musical?

The Last Starfighter... The Musical...

Brilliant.
Wow! If those sci-fi films can be done as professional musicals, then why not others? (Like, oh... Tron?)

Amazing, Todd! That's exactly what I thought of!

so, yesss... this should be interesting.
