Sorry it took so long, but I finally got the chance to watch Crossing the Frontier: Making The Last Starfighter again, and here is a direct quote of Larry Yaeger, Software Designer:

"There were earlier films that used computer graphics, but computer graphics was always used to portray computer graphics. As of The Last Starfighter, it was the first film that actually used computer graphics to portray what used to be portrayed with models and miniatures. The Last Starfighter really was the first film to do that."

Other people involved in the production talk about being the first to go for photo-realistic computer graphics.

I think their points are debatable.

If not for computer graphics, everything in TRON would have to have been done with models, miniatures and traditional animation.

The computer graphics in TRON were used to portray a different reality, not just souped-up computer graphics. Think about it; nobody would ever see the electronic world unless they were in it. You can't see it from this side of the screen; all you see is code. So I think their point about computer graphics only being used to portray computer graphics is invalid.

As for for photo-realism, I always felt the settings and vehicles in TRON did a great job at making the electronic world seem real and believable. Of course things in the electronic world wouldn't look anything like things in our world, but that doesn't mean they looked any less real. They looked real and believable for their setting.

Umm... actually, there IS a Starwars musical.

I gotta wonder how they plan on pulling this off. How does one pull off a major space battle on a theatrical stage? Some possibilities come to mind, but they all sound way to silly unless they're done REALLY well, but I somehow doubt they have the budget to do it.

And yes, this movie rocks! It probably stimulated my imagination in the space genre more than Strwrs for the simple idea that a simple Earth boy could stumble into an adventure like that. It probably inspired me to work a lot harder on my gaming skills too, just in case...

Explorers & Flight of the Navigator were really cool too. Couple of my other alltime fav 80's films.

Well MutoidMan, they do have the credit as the first space ships done in CG... But then again, it always seemed to me like they (not intending to be mean) seemed a little bit envious that Tron was the first film to use CG. -and The Last Starfighter and Tron did use different kinds of CG, to create different enviroments...

Hmm... Now do you suppose Tron was encouragement that CG could be made to work and be belivable? or do you suppose that Tron was discouragement to them because it didn't do well in the box office, and it relied so much on CG.

Hmmm... I think we hit these films in another thread that was dedicated to favorite Disney films, that morphed in to favorite 80's (and late 70's) sci-fi films.

I started a thred a while back due to my love of Disney SciFi. BTY, I just picked up My Science Project by Touchstone (Disney). Does anyone remember this cool film?

What is it with the entertainment industry? They have a severe case of remake-itis.

The Last Starfighter: The Musical? That's just . . . crazy.

And there are a bunch of films with plans for remakes, like Westworld and The Andomeda Strain for example. Why? Okay, maybe the special effects these days would be far superior. But more than likely they'll screw up the stories in the process.

Greetings Programs!

"The Last Star Fighter" captured the formula to what Steven Lisberger and Bonny MacBird where looking for essentially.

A clown playing a video game and it becomes real.

Although "The Last Star Fighter" did not succeed in special effects as Tron did during that particular time in history, story wise "The Last Star Fighter" won in the end in my own personal opinion.

By the way where can I get a good Chinese Language file?
