Rubix Cube

on Wednesday, July, 21, 2004 3:57 AM
Does anyone remember the "Rubix Cube"???

Did I post this before????

It's funny but I ran into another cube and can't figure out how I was able to solve it back in the 80's

What a cool way to waste time. I remember trying to solve it before the "Cosby Show" (the one with Theo, Rudy, Claire, etc) came on. I also used it many times on long bus rides to school, arriving at the movies early before 'Raider's of the loas Ark' started, on trips to Wal-Mart when buying Transformers/G.I.Joe/He-Man/LEGOs. One of my fav. memories was waiting at the local radio station twisting the cube and listening to song's from Van-Halen's 'Fair Warning' to play and looking forward (after my big sister gave up picking up the D.J.) to play Donkey-Kong at the arcade.

Well... I just found my old cube and can't remember jack. I guess with my age and lack of time, I'll be at this for a year or so trying to remember how I use to solve it as a kid.

Well.. Just another 80's thingy to bring up...

BTW: Van-Halen's "Diver Down" could be it... I can't remember much of it because I was spending most of my mind on solving this damn thing.. lol

Have fun If you google rubik's cube solver or something similar, you can actually see a variety of robots made to solve the puzzle, cool stuff. Also google speed cubing, I had a friend who used to be pretty good at it, mmmmm spatial thinking.

I loved reading your post, simply because nostalgia kicked in once again and brought on flashbacks of the golden days of the 80's. Sometimes I long for the past, especially cuz I used to hang out at arcades and mess around with a rubix cube myself. Aaah, simple times.

I was never any good at solving that thing, but I always enjoy making wickedly cool patterns out of the completed puzzle form and then seeing if I could go back to solving it again from one of those patterns. good times. I believe I listened to a lot of Kenny Loggins at the time, btw. That and of course, Journey. I think that pretty much sums up a good portion of the 80's right there for me.

I had one of those myself in the 80's as well. Was able to figure out on how to do both sides of the cube. the rest I couldn't figure out. But it was a good thinker for solving the puzzles there. Does anyone remember the circular one as well of the same thing?? I think there was one that was in that shape there.

Gah! I hated those cubes. My teachers got everyone in my school hooked on those things and back in the day, if you didn't have a Rubiks Cube or a Pyraminx you were "Persona non grata". I did however fall in love with the marble in the maze type brain teasers. I remember embarrasing the hell out of my dad with a puzzle that required you to get all four of the enclosed marbles into holes on each corner of the square playfield. Anyone remeber "Green Slime"? I used to love that stuff.

Check this out.

The guy who made this has since made a whole slew of excellent screensavers-- see the links on the left of the page. He's currently working on a bikini swordfighting screensaver, which I'm less than pleased about, but all his other screensavers are great. If you're into screensavers, be sure to check out his The Matrix Revolutions screensaver. Very awesome.

Ahhh yes, the Rubix Cube... I spent many hours working on that classic puzzle!

I clearly remember how popular they were and EVERYONE had to have one. I even had a key chain version, about half the size of the regular cube - it had the key chain part embedded on one of the corner blocks.

I could easily manipulate one side back to a single color... and even get the edge colors for the other touching sides in place. But that was as smart as I ever got. In order for me to restore color balance to my cubes, I had to take them apart, and then put them back together with the proper colors in the right places. That last piece was always tricky to fit back in as I recall.

Hey - remember how stiff moving they were when they were brand new? Remember how they had to be played with a bit to loosen them up and turn easier?

Does anyone remember the Pac Man Rubix Cubes? Instead of the colors, they had Pac Man items on the sides... and keys were on one of the sides if I recall properly.

Ahhhh the 80's - such a WONDERFUL decade of fun!

All right - here's one for ya - does anyone remember the Saturday morning cartoon that starred a talking, magic Rubix Cube? If memory serves, when his colors were all in the right place, he came to life and had magic powers. When his colors were twisted up, he... well, became a normal, non-talking, just there, Rubix Cube.

I used to watch that cartoon!

I even took some colored Silly Putty and clay and made a face and feet on MY Rubix Cube to make it like the one in the cartoon!

Oh man - I was such a little nerd! Um... not much has changed, I'm just a bigger one now!

Ok - chime in - did YOU watch the Rubix Cube Cartoon?

Oh my God! I totally remember that evil Rubik The Amazing Cube cartoon. Probably the worst show Ruby Spears worked on, next to "Turbo Teen". I and most others I know shunned the show severely. That was back in the good ol "Menudo Mania" subsection of the 80's when like ABC was all about proping them up during commerials and stuff. UGGGH! Horrid memories, mingling with the good. I remember not watching it but I cannot remember what I watched instead of it. Space Stars maybe? Man those were the days. When kids owned Saturday mornings and you could sit with your bowl of Capt'n Crunch (or any other sugar cereal) and vegge out in front of animated bliss on virtually every broadcast channel. Okay, now I gotta go find my Jayce and The Wheeled Warriors tape.order abortion pill http://unclejohnsprojects.com/template/default.aspx?morning-after-pill-price where to buy abortion pill

Not only do I rememer the Cube, I still have all mine. my daughters love to mess them up and then bring it to me to solve for them.
but they can create various designs on them.

I used to enter the compitetions for speed cubing. but now days I am way to slow at solving it. besides my speed cube is so loose and worn out it barely stays together now. heh heh

but I still love it.

and yes Im wierd.

BTW want to see some fast puzzle solving check out the 'Video List' of this site.
http://rubiks.dk/
and no Im not that fast. my best time was only 49 seconds

I had one of those!

Loved it!

It was easy to solve, too.

Turn one side a little crooked, then take the cube apart. Reassembled the pieces in the correct color sequence and careful squeezing in that last piece - don't want to break it.

That's how I did it anyway. I could never get further than a single side's color with the top row of the touching side's colors matching without taking it apart.

Haaaaa!

I remember that cartoon! Me and my little brother watched it each week as kids. I even made my own Rubix Cube look like the one in the TV show by applying a green Silly Putty face and two clay feet to it. Wasn't much good as a Rubix Cube that way, but looked cool in my bedroom. Man, I wish I had a picture of that. I should have taken pictures of all my old cool stuff before I moved out of my parents house so many years ago. Most of my stuff I still have. Much of it I do not.
