Posts: 73 | Tron 2.0 font in the works on Wednesday, July, 07, 2004 12:51 PM
I just wanted to get the feedback of my fellow programs on my most recent project.
I'm in the process of creating a font based on the TRON 2.0 logo. At this time I only have the 26 primary characters done - the numbers will be added shortly, as well as a few alternate characters. This is also only a rough version of the font: the metrics will have to be adjusted and tweaked (meaning that the spacing will be modified and, most likely, much tighter).
My inspiration for the remaining 22 characters that were not in the logo has been the background design in the game, as well as the set design from the original film and the font that was created for the PC some time ago. I wanted to try and meld the three into something that I felt captured the spirit of Tron.
It's currently still vector art - I haven't started converting it to an actual font yet. The finished product will be a True Type font for Mac and PC.
...The time frame for the finished product will be: in the near future. (as a graphic designer, fonts are not something I do on a frequent basis... they are usually done as side projects for my own personal self indulgence - such as this one)
I'm asking my fellow programs for their input on 2 things:
1. - how do you feel about the font so far.
2. - a name. ...For reasons of possible copyright infringement I don't want to call it "TRON 2.0" ...and I'm drawing a bit of a blank on a name, so any assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks

Wow! Excellent work so far. A few comments:
B looks like an R.
Maybe the C could be half an O? Probably fine either way.
D looks great!
E is rather hard to read but will be understandable in the middle of a word.
I looks halfway between a Z and and N. What if you just chop some corners off a vertical bar?
V and W are tricky but readable.
X is too close to Y. Try differentiating them a little more. Try using this for the X: Take two K's, flip one, and put them back to back. That should do it.
Z is hard to read but... I like it. It looks cool, and you won't use it that much anyway. It's good.
Awesome font, ettercap! Are you planning on doing lowercase too? Can't wait to see which special symbols you put in...

P.S. Oh yes, names. Suggestions:
Flynn
Yori
Jet
Ma3a
Digitization (Yes, it's gaudy, but the font is too. And we LIKE it that way. )
DotTxt
Trailz
Wigwam (sorry, that was random...)
Datablocks (or a variant: Datablox)
Tron Script
Disc Script
Sark Script
Executable

Looks great! Name? How about "Traahn" (pronounced "Tron"). I didn't want to steal the thunder of "Tron" entirely, so I chose this slight mod on the word for my screen-name. Feel free to use it for your font
Since I/we would think "Tron" when looking for this font in a list of fonts (i.e., when working in MS Word), it'd be nice if the font showed up similar to where "Tron" would be. So, a spin on the word is my recommendation.
Other thoughts:
Tronize
Trohn
TronLith
Tronscious
Tronsciousness
Tronscience
Tronnen
Tronflair
Tronrez
Or, here are other suggestions:
LithTron
Null
Guardian
Sorry, I could do this all night. I'll stop now
I'm getting out of here right now, and you guys are invited. -----^ |

As soon as I find it in the archive, I will post Syd Mead's font design for the original TRON font. It contains all the characters and numbers in the form he planned. You could use it to redesign your 2.0 font to meet the original ideal if you so desire.
Can't wait to see this completed.
Have you considered having the old style 1.0 characters for the lower case font and your new chaacters for UC?
You could call it TwoTRONs!

I would love to see Syd Mead's concept for the font!
Thanks for the positive feedback so far guys! I really appreciate it. Thanks for the name suggestions too, and keep them coming... the more I get the better.
Oh, Kamui - what's a Katagana letter? I'm not familiar with that.
To answer some of the questions from above: I'm exploring the creation of a lower case characters for this font... I was thinking something more rounded and fluid to offset the harsh, bold angles in the upper case characters. I have considered including the Tron 1.0 font, but I decided against it since it already exists on its own, and a few of the cahracters in my current project are rather close to those in the previous font set, so it might seem a bit redundant.
...As far as including a disk... I might rabbit, I might.
I'm working on this as I get the opportunity, and I want to make this available as soon as possible. I'm still fleshing out lower case charatcers (which, depending on how I feel they work with the font, may or may not be in the finished product), as well as some of the additonal characters, and my wife and I have a new born son ( ) who (as I'm sure you can imagine) has become a priority in our lives. I want to assure you guys that I will do my best to get this done as quickly as possible to satisfy some of the requests I've already received... (you know who you are )

Katagana= A type of Japanese lettering system based on phonetical sound of a word. This style is generally used for names of people and/or places. Hirigana is the other style used for everything else.

WOW!!! This is too cool. Now I've got some work to do one the walls of my light cycle arena. I sure hope you can find those letters.
By the way, is this published in any of the art or Tron books or is this something from your personal collection?
Thanks and I can't wait to see what you come up with ettercap,

Nice job on the font!
It looks very cool and I'm sure it will clean up nicely when you complete your final models!

Anything "script" sounds cool to me.

That is a scan from a folder given to me by Syd Mead with pre-production materials in it. I don't think I have scanned the alphabet yet and that is why I can't find it. I have to sift through my boxes this weekend.

DaveTRON, I'm in total envy of your Syd Mead possessions!
That man is one of the greatest designers that ever put pencil to paper.
His work on TRON and Blade Runner is unsurpassed!
What other cool stuff of Mead's do you have?

Syd and I are friends. We even share a birthdate, July 18th.
Syd has been very helpfulto me in creating portions of the Digital Archive I have been working on with Steven Lisberger, Richard Taylor and Harrison Ellenshaw.
The idea is to build it as a research tool and possibly create a book/dvd project out of the whole thing for the 25th anniversary of TRON.
Syd has only given me the "wedge book" for TRON, but he has shared a lot of information on images I have scanned and when I was working on TRON 2.0 he came in several times to see our progress. We did a trade once, my TOMY lightcycles for a signed copy of his Sentury book.
It's been fun getting to know him a bit. I am living a TRON fan's dream, I can tell you that. I am frieinds with four of the cornerstones of the movie's creation. Now if only I could meet Moebius and Peter Lloyd!where to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online

Why not call the font "Electroverse" which is kinda a ersatz name some of us fans bandy about to describe the universe of Tron or you could use my personal name for the universe: "Tronspace".

That's EXTREMELY cool that you can call Syd Mead a friend, Dave TRON. He is one of the people I hope to meet sometime that has worked in the film world. His designs are always so impressive and so innovative.
I look at him like Ray Harryhausen. Both are exceptional at creating new worlds that look like they could have - or will - exist.
