Posts: 4,467 | Check out my REZ Handler Program on Sunday, December, 14, 2003 1:39 AM
I've created a program to help manage .rez files in the Tron 2.0 Custom folder. I tried various methods of getting around the .rez file limit of the game, but none of them were satisfactory. REZ Handler will help make managing custom levels in .rez files, a lot easier. You can enable and disable them with a couple of mouse clicks, instead of renaming or moving them manually. The program also lets you switch between v1.040 and v1.030, again with just a mouse click. (Yes, a batch file can do the same thing, but now you have two useful functions together in the same place.)
I put this program together in about 3 days, after not having touched Visual Basic for 4 years. Just goes to show how useful VB can be as a rapid application development tool.
The program will work on any version of Windows, and is very small. However, the installer causes the .zip file download to weigh in at about 2 MB. Sorry about that . . . but an installer was necessary because the program depends on certain extra files, that you may not have on your machine. So the installer creates them for you. The installed files are smaller than the bloated installer.
Here is a screenshot of the program's window:

If you encounter any bugs, or if anyone would be willing to mirror this file, please let me know.

REZ Handler has been designed to help players work around the .REZ file limit of the TRON 2.0 game.
You can now easily enable and disable custom map .REZ files with a few mouse clicks. The program also lets you switch game versions, create .REZ file preset groups, and extract maps from .REZ files to the proper folder, plus more.
Works on Windows XP/2000/Me, and should also work on 98.
This program allows you to easily manage your custom map .REZ files, to stay under the limit. As you may or may not know, TRON 2.0 has a problem dealing with too many .REZ files. This causes all sorts of strange behavior in the game, such as the version number dropping or features going missing.
REZ Handler will let you know if you're using too many .REZ files, and prevent these problems from ever happening.
It can be downloaded from http://www.patchgonebad.com/.

If anyone downloaded REZ Handler v1.1 when it was released on the 22nd, please uninstall it and download the latest release dated 03/01/04.
I discovered several bugs in the program that needed to be fixed. Having tested the program over and over again looking for even the smallest flaw, I believe the program is now bug free.
Here is a screenshot of the new version, in case you're wondering what it looks like now:

Again, comments/questions/feedback is appreciated.

Here is my (belated) Christmas gift to the Tron 2.0 community. REZ Handler v1.2!
I probably could have gotten it done sooner, but I was either distracted or lazy. (Mostly lazy.) I originally wanted to have it done by the first anniversary of its release, which was December 13th last year. But that came and went, so then I aimed for a Christmas release. Well, I was close anyway.
There have been so many improvements and bug fixes, it's not funny. (And I may have introduced some new bugs while I was at it.) Since getting people to beta test has always been like pulling teeth, I tested it on my own as much as I could. Now with this - hopefully final - release, you are ALL my beta testers . . . If any major problem crops up that I didn't account for, I'll issue another release. But this is probably the last version I'll ever make.
[EDIT: Image removed because it's outdated.]
What's changed since the last version?
New Install Map and Install Mod features
New Combine .REZ feature
New Uninstall TCDG Folder feature
Checks to see if a Mod is enabled and warns the user about it
REZ Handler associates the .rez file type with itself, if WinRez LT is not already installed
File selections are cleared when switching between Inactive and Active .rez file boxes with the mouse
Default button for dialogs with dangerous actions, now set to No to avoid accidental Yes responses
REZ Handler's limit of 50 .rez files has been removed, the number of .rez files it can manage in the Custom\Resources folder is now unlimited
Clicking on the Rez and Derez button arrows now causes the buttons to react (sink in)
No longer crashes if .rez files from a Preset are missing (have been renamed or deleted)
No longer crashes if a .rez file of the opposite type already exists when using the Rez and Derez buttons
No longer crashes if any important external files are missing when run (LithRez.exe, readme.html, etc.)
No longer crashes on exit in Win 98 / Me (crashing did not occur on 2000 / XP)
Various other improvements
As you can see, REZ Handler has evolved tremendously from a year ago. I probably still could've made it better, but I think this is the end of the road for my development on the program.
You can download it from:
[EDIT: Link removed because it's outdated.]
Please uninstall any old version first, before installing the new one.
Now hopefully newcomers to Tron 2.0 won't have an excuse when they want to install custom maps! The program does it for you, and makes sure you don't go over the limit.

Impressive work, faq!
Is there any limitations to the 'combine .rez files' function?
Because that looks like a brilliant feature.

Thanks harpo.
Yep, there are a couple of things people need to be aware of when using the combine feature.
First, the program doesn't check to see how much free hard drive space there is before combining. Long story, but basically implementing a check for that would have meant more programming work that I wasn't prepared to do. So you need to make sure you have plenty of free space in the folder where REZ Handler is installed, and in the "Custom\Resources" folder, before using this feature. (Add up the file sizes of all the files you're combining, and you'll know how much free space you need in each folder.) Otherwise the program will freeze or crash. Don't worry, the original .REZ files won't be harmed if the program crashes.
Second, combining the files can sometimes result in a new .REZ file that doesn't work right. If one map has a file belonging to it (texture, sound, etc.) that overwrites a file from another map, then the other map will stop working correctly. Because of that, the program backs up the originals after combining. So you need to test the maps inside the new .REZ file to be sure it's okay. If you're satisfied that it's fine, then you can delete the backups.
Much of this is explained in the readme or in the program itself.

Thanks, DT. Hope you find the program useful.
Have you downloaded any custom maps before this point? Just curious. Since you're an avid Tron collector, I figured you'd have all the maps too by now. But it sounds like you haven't. You've been missing out!
Except for a few of the latest maps, I've collected all the rest into map packs that are available from PGB and Boxhat. You can get most of them from http://www.boxhat.com/maps and the remaining few from PGB's download section. Again, except for the newest maps, I list them all with screenshots in my FAQ. I'll add the new ones soon.

I've started as well to download some other maps as well and so far so goo in getting the files loaded in. Redrain85 the one other added feature that you can add to this if you want too. I'm running my gaming rig over here with 2 different partitions over here. one with 98SE and the other 2000 pro. Could you see if you can add into the program to make sure that it recognizes where its being launched from. Since its thinks that its loading from C drive when in actual fact its suppose to be reading off the E drive that I have the programm originally instlled on. I know its not a too big of a deal. I just basically tell it go to my E instead of C drive for loaing up the files.
But its good to have that program around.

One quick question here. iMaybe you can help me here. When we want to play a file like what we loafdined in with this program do we just highlight and exit this and it will load as a single player or multiple game file? I never really used this before. So I might be missing something here.
Never mind I think I had answer my own question over hre on that one. I wasn't looking at the right place there./ Most of the files are for the light cycles area. I though that there was a section where you have disk arena as well as what QUake had where you could load a full map for a small game of disk playing for single players as well. 2 Legit 2 quit

I'm not sure I understand your question. Where is installed? On the 98SE partition (I'm guessing Drive E), 2000 Pro partition (guessing Drive C), or both?
Same goes for the REZ Handler program. Where is it installed? Because frankly, it doesn't matter where the program is installed. It looks in the registry to figure out where the game is.
Now if you have, say, the game installed on the 98SE partition and not the 2000 Pro partition, and you run REZ Handler when you have 2000 Pro loaded . . . then I can see why you're having a problem. But then the game shouldn't run either, because it was installed on 98SE.

All the map .REZ files you put in the Resources folder are Multiplayer maps. None of them are Single Player. And the maps you put in that folder can be Disc Arena, Light Cycles, and Derez. It doesn't matter. All three types go in the same place.
All the files listed on the right side are active and can be loaded in the game. All the files on the left are disabled and can't be used until you make them active again.

The rez handler is installed on my e partition that is my windows 2000 pro. my 98se is on c:. I don't have it installed on 98se. just on 2000 on drive here. where tron 2.0 is installed on where its on E drive. I think that rez handler looks for the default on C drive instead of where I had installed it on where it is E drive. So its assuming that its on C as default location.
Sorry for the confusion there redrain.

Hmm. Well, if I'm understanding you correctly . . . that shouldn't happen. If you have 2000 Pro loaded from E, and is installed to the same E partition, REZ Handler reads the registry of the active version of Windows to find the game's directory.
Did you install the game when you had 98SE running? Or 2000 Pro? (Then again, if you installed from 98SE and tried running the game in 2000 Pro, the game shouldn't work either.)
And what did you mean by "telling it" to go to your 2000 Pro partition? Telling which program?

OKay thats kwel that you can have an option as for which default you want on it. It would b good to hav here. Since I'm running on two different OS over her at differnt times. So that will come in handy over here. And its normal to find bugs in aprogram. You can't gt a program 100% bug free.
