Will Disney give up on Tron?

on Saturday, November, 03, 2012 10:41 AM
Ok, so here's where I'm going w/ this. Disney just purchased Lucasfilm for $4B, now they have the Star Wars franchise. Do you think the beancounters at Disney will ever greenlight another Tron film / project when they know that making ANY Star Wars project will be more profitable. Or, do you think the addition of the Star Wars franchise will strengthen Disney's financial position allowing them to make more Tron projects?

I hope it is the latter but I am afraid Disney now has what they always wanted, a live-action sci-fi juggernaut. Something I feel they always wanted Tron to be, but never felt Tron was.

I'm a little down in the dumps on this one, so cheer me up a bit and give me your thoughts.

No they will not. If anything it will strengthen it. Anything that Disney can use to make money they will. Lucasfilm is still Lucasfilm. I believe Disney will let Lucasfilm do what it needs to do and release new SW films, but Disney still has a lot they can do with the TRON-iverse and as long as the fans like us are here to support it, like right now watching and buying episodes of Uprising, then they will continue to feed the need.

They have a game-changer with Tron and I hope they do indeed exploit it!where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill online

Thanks Kat. Ok, feel sort of better now.

I wrote my initial thread yesterday. Last night, I took my 7-year old daughter to see Wreck-It-Ralph. This is the same daughter who is watching Uprising and has watched both Tron & Legacy.

First the good news. Wreck-It-Ralph rocks! Perfect Father / Daughter or Parent / Kid movie....if you are a child of the 80's and are a gamer it was amazing. To be able to watch this w/ her was great, she loved it, hasn't stopped talking about it. Now (not to sound like Debbie Downer) but nothing Tron related at all appeared in the movie.

Wreck-It spoilers if you read on (not plot points, just basic story stuff).....this is a movie about video game characters and what happens "behind" the screen. Game characters interacting w/ the worlds of other games. People going to arcades and playing games and how the avatars / AI interact w/ each other behind the screen. Sound familiar? There are "cameos" by many well-loved gaming characters / franchises but NO nod to Tron....at all. This is a Disney film, they wouldn't even have to pay royalties. What is up w/ that?

The only thing I can surmise is that Disney wants to separate "TRON" from anything that is too kiddified, perhaps? Even with "Uprising" being animated, it's not written for kids.

It does seem strange tho as I would imagine a classic lightcycle would have worked great at some point in the film.abortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion

I agree with BanditTron. The purchase of LucasFilm will only strengthen Disney's position. My understanding is the next TRON film will not begin production until probably later in 2013 or possibly sometime in 2014.

Joseph Kosinski has been busy working on "Oblivion", which wrapped filming in August 2012, and is now in post-production. I just read that Oblivion has been slated to be released on April 19, 2013. So any production that would begin on a new TRON film would probably happen in mid-2013 at the very earliest. And this is on the assumption that they bring Kosinski back to direct the next TRON film.

I think they are waiting to see how TRON: Uprising does in capturing the younger audience. They know they have the core TRON fan audience already. What remains to be seen is how much can they expand that audience. Hopefully, the Disney machine will do what it does best...market the TRON franchise effectively (which in my opinion, they haven't done very well) and make money at it. I think bringing LucasFilm onboard can only help that goal.

Like I said in the other thread Disney own Lucasfilm but this has no effect on Disney's own projects. Lucasfilm will operate as its own entity as it always has, it just not has the extra money pot of Disney to pull from. But as any deal Disney will also get a cut of any profits made from Lucasfilm which if anything would probably allow Disney to fund more projects that may not be massive money makers (Tron)abortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion

Not sure I agree...

I can cry about "sour grapes" though. The very few times it was on prime time it got very little advertising. My kids watch Disney X D all the time, and when they had Uprising promos, they always ended it with an air time, but this never happened for the Thursday prime time slots. Hard to make a case for Uprising "failing" primetime if no one knew it was on...

In any case, I do agree that even though Uprising is more "adult-oriented", moving it to Monday at midnight (not Sunday) seems like they are intentionally trying to lose their audience. Everyone on this forum (I'm guessing) either DVR's it, or picks it up off of iTunes or the web.

I, for one, am just going to enjoy the last 8 episodes produced, and just pray for the best that they decide to make a Tron 3 or another set of Uprising episodes.

I liken it to Galaxy Rangers - excellent voice cast, stellar writing, soundtrack that deserves to rattle your car windows...

MUCH too Dark and Edgy for a cartoon ostensibly aimed for younglings. GR had things like one of the good guys being the last product of a super soldier army, and the only one who remained loyal to his creators...who only spared his life so he could hunt down and kill his "siblings." (Again, we're talking slavery, on the part of the GOOD GUYS). It had several instances of genocide, an on-screen body count on par with Star Trek: The Next Generation, a situation where one of the Rangers shagged an attractive female crime boss, and a scene where the most innocent interpretation ends with a nasty on-screen mind-rape, with Word of God and some Fanon saying the villainess in question wasn't past the other kind.

Now, we get Uprising:

When a character who was the textbook definition of Lawful Good through the first film and Kingdom Hearts tries to kill his apprentice several times because the apprentice was trying to talk him out of a suicidal revenge mission? When the sheer amount of shattered voxels on the floor suggest scenes straight out of a Tarantino flick as soon as you add up that those are the same as blood and body parts? We've crossed some lines here. Not saying it's a bad thing, but back in 1986, no one knew what to do with the Rangers as their themes and style clashed hard with the toy ad toons. As a result, I know my station (KSTW) put it on at 4am! I'm wondering if Disney has put it at the strange hours partly because they realized that the series is more an Adult Swim than kiddie pool.

It's an entire universe in there, one we created, but it's beyond us now. Really. It's outgrown us. You know, every time you shut off your computer...do you know what you're doing? Have you ever reformatted a hard drive? Deleted old software? Destroyed an entire universe?"

I've never seen Tron as a kids' franchise. "Disney" does not automatically = "for kids." That doesn't mean it's inappropriate for kids, but it's not CREATED as a children's movie-- neither one.

And since "animated" does not automatically = "for kids" (a common complaint I hear from people who have to listen to parents pissed off that they let their kids see X anime film and OMG IT WAS NOT APPROPRIATE ANGST ANGST-- makes me wonder if these folks would also park their kiddos in front of a TV and put on some hentai, cause hey, it's animated so it must be for children, right?), I also don't necessarily think the animated series is for kids. I have no idea what channel it airs on-- if it's some kiddie channel, then i guess that makes it more difficult.

T82 was pretty benign. But they chose to take T:L in a darker direction, and I'd hate to see them reverse it to syrupy-sweet for the rest of the franchise to draw in kids. Watch it, decide if it's appropriate for your kids (hint: it could spark a discussion on some interesting world issues, so don't hide it from them just yet), and if not, well, save it until they're older. They'll survive.

Japanense anime have kiddie shows as well as those geared towards older teens and adults. And how long did it take for that to gain some popularity at least in the United States? At least in the late 1980s. (Not referring to Speed Racer or Battle of the Planets which came out in the 1970s.) However some of those series were cancelled when they were aired too especially when local networks aired them when aired for the later afternoon hours where they would be viewed for children even when their content was anything but.

Alot of people still equate animation equals kids. Shouldn't animation be viewed as simply another form of story-telling? As it's been previously compared to any anime from a Saturday night/Sunday morning Adult Swim (or even some animation aired on the G4 network).

I would hope it would depend on just how Disney wishes to go ahead. Would be a far too interesting storyline for them not to pass up. While the content of Uprising may be a reason for the time-switch I don't see why they would have to move it to as late as they they did. If anything, to me. TRON: Uprising takes some cues from ancient Rome when it was already in the thralls of internal decay and downfall. The gladiatorial death "games" are certainly an example. There are others of course. But would be a shame to not explore the world and society Uprising has to offer and how some try to change it for the better.

The thing about Tron is that it's a unique tool in Disney's box. There's literally nothing quite like Tron, and anything close comes off as a cheesy imitation.

Having Star Wars under one roof may only strengthen Disney's desire to go after the science fiction audience - they've never had a good foothold there, never had any strong properties. Don't forget that Star Wars essentially means Disney now has a consistent breadwinner to sit there and tick over the revenue. When companies are awash in resources, they're MUCH kinder towards more niche projects. It is when they're starving that they kill everything that isn't a runaway hit.

Where Star Wars gives Disney something cool for action, technology, and sci-fi that starts at a young age range, Tron is a bit older and more sophisticated (especially the darker Tron Legacy / Uprising interpretation, which is actually legitimately smart stuff.)

In terms of worldwide box office, Tron Legacy did just barely achieve what several sources claimed was the required success for Tron 3 to be fully on the table. Really, I see no reason to assume there's no hope. Depending on how things go financially for Disney in the next year or so, chances could be excellent for Tron 3 being greenlit.

Don't forget Disney still wants Kosinski to reboot The Black Hole and he's the only real choice to direct Tron 3. He appears to still have their ear. The writers of Legacy were also actively developing a finalized screenplay as of four months ago.abortion pills online abortion questions cytotec abortion

Absolutely. Especially since I'm willing to bet they picked animation NOT so much to make it kid-oriented, as to not have to de-age Bruce.

I learned to appreciate anime when my ex's brother made me watch a bunch of it. It's a legit medium if you ask me.
