Well I was bored and made this for some friends of mine who are going to do a Youtube show about video games. I made everything from scratch drew the boxed, green pipe and mushroom and floor in Inkscape (free program on Linux). Then I simply painted in the clouds and hills with the paintbrush.. in GIMP also free on Linux... the sky was just a layer filled with the right shade of blue

Yeah. Fan art threads for both Tron and other fandoms tend to go unnoticed here. I don't think it was always that way.

I think there was a thread that had to do with making other movies and characters in the Tron art style. That was a pretty active thread.

Fan fiction on the other hand is pretty active (which is healthy for the fandom.).

About your Mario Bros. 2 art, I think the UI font turned out rather well. Maybe you could make a varation where the floor is grassy. You could also have some palm trees, cherries, or one of those vases. Mario Bros. 2 is known for it's crazy enemies. Take advantage of that and have fun.
