They weren't all discless hobos. Rinzler certainly wasn't. They may have been conscripted into the games by Clu at some point, but they weren't all newbies like Sam. Heck, Sam's first opponent had been in the system since before Flynn got trapped. It either speaks to the power of a User, or against that of a Program if he can be beaten by a guy with zero arena experience, but that's neither here nor there.
