I think my friend Jodie will have a fit when she reads this LOL. What she will be really annoyed at is the fact that the lady who wrote this article assumes that sexism is something that can only be applied to females when in fact it swings both ways. Tron is not sexist in the slightist she says that Star Wars is sexist......ummm.......I don't see that?

Like one of the comments below state, the whole movie revolves around the fate of the female lead character........this is sexist because..........? Considering that Quorra is one of the best female characters to come out of a movie in a long time, save for some of Angelina Jolie's roles, and considering that she's a vast improvement on Yori in the kickass department, I honestly can't complain that much. She's a hell of a lot more useful than most female roles in movies, even if they just couldn't resist putting her in frigging heels to kick ass in (because that's TOTALLY what I'd wear if I expected to be fighting for my life. Nothing like a little handicap to slow you down just when you're about to die. Makes it more interesting that way, right?).

But she's right: there could have been a lot more female roles. The lack of females in the original Tron could've been explained by a smaller number of female programmers in those days. These days there are many more--when I used to work at a bank data department, at least half the people there were female, working everything from the Help Desk to programming to InfoSec to being specialists on the software we used.

I mean, I suppose it's sad that I'm justifying here-- I shouldn't have to say, "well, at least they didn't put in the Sirens and then give women a few pasty stereotypical computer-geek dudes to look at" and feel grateful for just that, but let's face it: none of the dudes in this movie compare to the women, sorry. Garrett Hedlund is adorable in that "I'd like to hang out with him and play videogames" way, and Anis Cheurfa has a hot bod, but that's it. The counter to Gem is Castor, for heaven's sake. Then we have Jarvis, old Bruce Boxleitner, an old Jeff Bridges (who wasn't that great in his prime), and a Jeff Bridges with creepy CGI (though I know plenty of the women here are okay with that, lol). Even the dude in uniform is chubby (Ernie the security guard. Though I understand he was supposed to be a stereotype, so okay).

(They need to take a page from the book of 300, perhaps. If you're gonna make an action movie, put some nice male eyecandy in. As a female, I personally like action movies, but not every woman does, yet she'll probably end up going to at least a couple in her life because of friends and significant others. Put somebody hot in it. Gives us ripped Gerard Butler wearing next-to-nothing and suddenly just about any movie becomes watchable, trust me.)

I really was feeling the lack of female Disc Wars combatants. I suppose maybe they figured it was a little too painful and harsh to have Clu systematically killing women, or something?

What do you want? I'm busy.

I know what you're saying that we could have seen a few more female programs knocking about but what would it have added to the story? Would it have changed the relationship between CLU and Flynn??? No.......Or the one between Quorra and Sam??? No. While as background it may have mixed things up a bit but I do recall seeing TONS of female programs in the Games arena and going to be repurposed. And in the end of the line club so no I don't think there is ground to say that there should be more female characters. If you break it down to main characters you have:

Clu/Flynn
Sam
Quorra

The rest are supporting roles really, Gem, Castor, Jarvis, Alan are really not in the movie enough to say that they are MAIN characters. Don't forget that the Sirens are living up to their namesake http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siren hence why they are called Sirens.

Remember this is just a movie it is not a statement on rights between the sexes, however if it WAS that, it is saying that the future of humanity rests on the shoulders on this one WOMAN.

P.S. In advance in case anything I have said can be taken in offence on any scale it is not aimed that way, I have zero tollerence for sexist remarks. So please don't take anything the wrong way.

I'm sure she has her arguments, but I loved Leia's character as well. Yes, she and Han hook up, but I'm not sure I'd call that sexist--just about every story has to have two of the main characters hook up at some point. It's tired, but not necessarily sexist.

Leia rocked. She was smart, diplomatic, could shoot a blaster, ride a speeder, pilot a ship, pose as a bounty hunter to spy, and she didn't dress all in tight spandex and heels (okay, there WAS the bikini thing she wore at Jabba's place). And all this in the 70s. Most other movies don't have such strong female characters even these days. (I have no idea how Padme Amidala was as a character because I only saw one of the "prequel" flicks, but I think she kicked some ass too at some point in one of them, didn't she?.)

As far as what having more women would've added to the movie: on the outside, nothing. But I like diversity in my films, stories, etc., just as we find it in the world. If all of the characters were white (and note: all of the main characters ARE; you've got a couple secondary characters who are black or Asian, but that's it), I'd have the same problem with it. My fanfic has characters who are female, black, Asian, middle-Eastern, South Asian, Latino, gay, in interracial relationships... because that's how the world around us is and it would be silly not to reflect that. Besides, on the Grid that shouldn't matter because they don't have the same traditional social mores we do and there's really no reason there to have discrimination based on sex, skin color, sexual orientation, etc.

What do you want? I'm busy.

I completely agree with this.

Stepping back to the Leia in bikini but just remember she was Jabba's personal slave girl so it isn't like she could be wearing much else. And it might have been to degrade her slightly being someone as powerful as she is.

Perhaps Flynn just preferred the company of men, and it reflected in his work on the grid?

Sexism in tron is quiet a stretch. Yes, the girls have skin tight cat suits but they are not revealing at all.

While many may just outright disagree with what the writer of the article stated, it does give some food for thought, and basically, there hasn't been much of an inclusion of Women in the TRONiverse, and specifically Tron: Legacy (yes, there was Quorra, and the Sirens, but I feel that Quorra could have been developed better, and the Sirens, too), and, in Legacy, let's also not forget that a very pivotal significant character was left out on both sides of the screen: Dr. Lora Baines-Bradley and her digital counterpart YORI. There would be NO travel between the two worlds without her technical prowess that created the Shiva Laser, in the first place. I seriously hope that we see Dr. Lora and Yori in both TRON: UPRISING as well as TR3N. We also don't even hear much of anything from Bonnie MacBird who helped Steven Lisberger initially flesh out the TRON world that we all love and enjoy. As much as I am in awe of TRON and TRON: Legacy, and recently TRON 2.0 (Yeah, I know I'm a little late to that party - I finally have a computer that can play it), I can also admit that it has some flaws. I think people should just make movies the way they see it in there head. Changing the story to be politically correct is stupid. Create it the way you want it to be and change it only if it's in line with your vision of the film.

Of course, Lucas added Lando in Empire because of complaints there weren't any black characters in Star Wars. And what would the world be like without Lando Calrissian. But, despite Lando's smoothness, I think changes to the story should only be done if it fits with the writer's vision and not pressure from politically correct activist groups.

likely a wing-nut. fringe left, fringe right, doesn't matter. not a whole of of sense to be made with such folk. Truth is rarely at the extremes of thought.

My 5yr old daughter loved tron legacy. She loves Quorra and I encourage her to identify with a strong, yet believable female character. Not too many of those in any film these days and I'm more than happy with Tron in those terms. The fact that Quorra saves Sam x3 times is also a nice point.
