DVD vs Blu Ray?

on Saturday, April, 16, 2011 5:14 PM
As far as the DVD release, I'm a little peeved about the utter lack of features for those of us who bought just the DVD. We got squat compared to the Blu-Ray users. Sorry for not wanting to blow *checks www.bestbuy.com* from 80 to 130 big ones on a type of quality that I can't even see at the best of times. Screw you, Disney.

But anyway, I'm ranting. I still enjoyed my copy and my jaw dropped at the idea of a Tron animated series!

Well, as you know already, Blue-ray isn't selling as well as Betamax did in the 80's. So they are in the middle of a campaign to sell you on getting that Blue-ray player.

It's comparable to Sony re-releasing a new version of the psp. Nobody really buys it.
Nintendo is selling yet another hand-held that probably won't sell either.

Bad economy. Not the time to ship new products when your old products still sale. Playstation 2 games still sell. Nintendo DS games are still strong in the sells department.

Microsoft almost bought it with the 360. These companies believe every 5 years they have to ship new hardware but that has never been the case, man. Then with quality being what it is now. Nobody is taking the risk on new stuff but the high-rollers.

Believe me I feel your pain. I thought the 25th anniversary edition of TR0n complete with its documentaries was the best release of any movie I have. Then seeing this recent released version of Legacy I was disgusted but will wait for a special edition version to come out in a year or two. If we're all still here.

If this "franchise" goes as planned - look for more home video releases as different packages so that we must all start buying them over and over...

(eg. "Star Wars")

I predict a TRON Legacy DVD Special Edition at Christmas. Maybe a TRON/TRON Legacy DVD Special Pack as well...

I tend to do the every other item thing. I got VHS, but not Beta. I got the DVD player, but won't get the Blu-Ray. HIgh def means nothing without an HD TV and my two TVs are still working so why buy another? No room. It just seems technology gets thrust at us and you don't know which will stay around and which won't. I'm tired of multiple copies of my fave movies and tv shows, the reason I bought another VHS player. Can't just toss my tapes.

Or better, yet, a director's cut with 13 minutes of new, never-before-seen footage! *Sigh* Oh well, I'm a sucker for these things...

I'll just wait until someone posts those 13 minutes at youtube. :-)

It was called "Flynn Lives: The Next Day" if I remember correctly. There was another teaser put out on Youtube with Ed Dillinger Jr. IM'ing someone (his father?) with an MCP moniker about Sam.

I upgraded to Blu-Ray earlier this year. I found a Sony player that supports 3D Blu-Ray discs for just over $100 at a Best Buy as an "open box" item. I don't have a 3DTV yet... keyword YET... as I'm waiting for the prices to drop on them some more.

Blu-Ray for me was the right thing to do and I kick myself for not upgrading sooner as I bought into that upconverting DVD nonsense for quite a while. It looks great and sounds even better than DVD on my home theater. If you like extras, there's a whole plethora of them for you to enjoy on Blu-Ray.

That being said, it seems like streaming movies are really starting to gain a foothold and that could potentially put a dent in the printed media market like DVD and Blu-Ray discs. I'm not a fan of movie streams because it seems like there's any myriad of technical glitches that could occur but admittedly I'm not completely up on the ins-and outs of those services. Plus, I like actually owning the movie on Blu-Ray or DVD as opposed to renting.

Blu-Ray is doing very well. Even the 3D format is doing well. Grab an old PS3. It is a blu-ray and 3D blu-ray player (once you get the latest update). But, you will still need a 3D TV to view 3D. Even the original "Fat" PS3 works. It's what I have. The 3D is awsome. As far as the extras, you can fit more on a Blu-Ray.

Got a PS3, never looked back. It's almost physically painful to watch VHS anymore, and even though the PS3 upconverts SD digital video, I've been totally spoiled by Blu-ray. Seriously tho, the PS3 is an excellent investment and you definitely get more bang for your buck over a "standard" Blu-ray player. And with the prices on HD plasma displays continuing to drop, it's even easier for folks on a tight budget (like me) to get hooked up.

From what I hear, Beta was superior to VHS, was smaller, better picture, all that stuff but the porn industry chose VHS as it's format which killed Beta.

It's hard to say now weather that would be a similar circumstance involving DVD vs Blu Ray because of how things are handled through the internet these days.

We bought a Vizio 3D Tv for $698.00, at Walmart. We were going to buy a Vizio LCD 42 in. for about $580.00. For the difference in price, we couldn't say no. We bought our from wal-mart. I am so glad I bought the PS3. My wife is too, she thought it was just a game system.

Here is a link for the 3D Tv. Note how it uses the NEW 3D tv technology.

Haven't gone the 3D TV route yet (waiting for the tech and the price to mainline a bit more) and am perfectly happy with the 50" Panasonic plasma that adorns our living room. Picked it up during the death throes of Circuit City's brick and mortar stores, also got a killer Denon AV receiver (open box) for about 75% less than the retail price. It was a very good day.

Although I don't have a Blue Ray DVD player, I did buy the Blue Ray/normal DVD 2 Disk version for the simple reason that the cover is better.

The normal DVD version is quite ordinary, but the 2 disk version is not only embossed but has a metallic sheen to it has well, which I think looks better!

I've posted this before, but you can use your home computer's GPU to play 3D movies. Nvision Magazine has a great story focused around three programs that will help you do this. I know some on this forum have PCs built for gaming, which is all you need. One, if not all, of the programs even Up-converts 2D movie to 3D. I don't know all of the details, but it's a start. There is also an awsome story on Tron: Legacy. Very cool.

OOoooh I finally found a portable Blu-Ray player at Target today!!!, although they want $299 for it. I don't want anymore stuff hooked up to my TV so this is just what I need but the cost is prohibitive.
