Tron VS. The 13th Floor. Witch movie did you like better?

on Thursday, December, 30, 2010 11:57 AM
Does anyone remember a little overlooked film called 'THE 13th FLOOR'? It came out in 1999 at about the same time as Matrix did.

The reason I ask is because although I loved the new tron movie. I still find it very hard to believe that Digitizing matter into energy will ever be possable. Don't get me wrong I think Tron is a great movie but the science bewind its idea is far fetched at best and totaly unrealistic.

However in the movie The 13th Floor you have computer programs inside a hugh data base that can think, feel and believe they are human. Its an intire city based on 1930's LA. These programs go about their lifes just as people did in those days. However they are programed not to want to leave LA. Because there is nothing beyond the mountains of LA and for a program to find this out, it could coase caos in their little world.

Now inter people from the real world who "Jack-in" as they called it, who can inter this world and play as they want within reason. That is until the main character Douglas Hall fines out he himself is nothing but a computer program inside a digital world and that the year really is 2022. Twentythree years in the future.

It was a far more believable film then Tron. Because your mind might inter this VR world but your body remains behind in the real world.

So I ask if you have seen the movie what do you think of the two films?abortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion

I haven't seen The 13th floor, but it sounds interesting. It also sounds like it has similar ideas to Dark City, and the Matrix (not that it copied them, just that there are similarities).

I find that the Tron world, while less realistic, is a much more compelling idea. The concept of the Matrix, for instance, is that there are written computer AI's that inhabit a constructed simulation of the real world. The Tron world is more like a manifested universe that resulted from the operation of computers. It's not deliberate in any way (well the one in the first movie wasn't), and they aren't AI's written to be like people.

It kinda fits in with that idea that our universe could be just a molecule in some other universe, and so perhaps there are whole universes inside the molecules that make up the computer, or a flower. Neither idea makes much scientific sense, but they're such grand ideas that they are still very interesting.

Sorry if that's not clear. I know what I mean, but I've always had trouble describing it to others.

And yes, Matter can be converted to energy. See Einstein's E=MC2: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass%E2%80%93energy_equivalence
It's interesting you say that. Because in Buddhishm there is a belief that ENERGY AND THOUGHT ARE ONE IN THE SAME! "I think therefore I am!" Yet we ourselves are made up of energy and yet we still can think, dream and so on. So if you are an Atheist you should ask yourself one queston. If the universe just happened by chance and we are nothing after we die. Then how is it that these random elements called atoms can form these large molecules called DNA and other Molecules called PROTEINS that are made up of millions of atoms in one molecule. So how is it you wonder that these random atoms can form these Proteins that do these amazing jobs like building DNA molecules? How is it that these living cells can replicate themselves time and time again a billion times without a single mistake. With only one in a billion of those times being a mutation. So if it just happened by accident like you like to believe, then how is this possable? How is it that atoms can do all this? The truth is that not one of you dam Atheists never want to face, is that its imposable for it to happen in a random universe!!!!!!!!!!! AND YES, I DID SAY IMPOSABLE! Yet here we are in flesh and blood.

As to the matter of transfuring Matter into energy. Yes I do agree that its possable to do so, but not the way it was shown in the movie. First of all in order to convert matter into engery you would have to excelerate matter up to the speed of light and with a narrow focus, redirect that energy into a focused beam of light. Kind of like warping matterinto a focused beam of light. This is how travel between stars is possable in real time. Because I believe Einstein had it backwards. The faster you get to the speed of light everything you pass would look like it it was standing still. It would seem that time had stoped on Earth. Don't believe me then drive a car a 120 MPH and pass a car doing 50 MPH and the car do 50 would look like it was standing still. I know I've done it.

Therefore time is only a matter of prospective and our point of veiw. Don't you agree TRON UNIT?

The original Story was far better than the movie. However the movie wasn't bad. I know you are not asking for a critique but it got overshadowed by The Matrix. I think thought the philosophy of both TRON and 13Th are essentially entertwined the overall mechanics are totally different. 13Th was all about simulating the world and individuals and what happens when those simulacrums become aware that they are in an artifical world. TRON never debates that, instead it propells the viewer and lead into the artificial world and posits the question, can artifical life become real through contact with someone who is originally real, but has become digital. The programs realize that there is an existance beyond their world, the world of the USERS and that they play a small part in how USERS go through life. So personally though the tech in 13TH is more realistic the two stories share an underlying philosophy that somehow digital life might somehow become more than artificial through contact with living, real beings when technology allows the flesh and blood to make more intimate contact with the cyberworld.

personally I liked the 13th floor. Because it was more realistic and truer to life.

Every time I try to watch The 13th Floor, i feel bored and once I feel asleep part way through the movie. Seriously, I'm not kidding.

Now, for me, Tron Legacy is enjoyable everytime I see it. So I liked Tron Legacy vastly more. abortion pills online abortion questions cytotec abortion

On the subject of matter/energy conversion, aren't they technically the same thing? All particles in our universe are constantly in quantum motion, therefore an object that appears to be at rest is actually still in constant motion. If that subatomic motion were to ever cease, temperature would be absolute zero, and the matter would cease to exist, which according to science is impossible.

For the OT: I must say, the 13th floor came to mind the moment I heard Flynn talking about making a 'replica' of himself to work during his absence. But there was obviously still a difference since Flynn didn't "log in" to Clu when he wanted to work on the grid.

I don't think it's really fair to even try comparing the two. The simulation in 13th Floor and the Grid in Tron were created for entirely different purposes. And 13th Floor is more of a mystery tale, whereas Tron is an action film, and I like each for entirely different reasons.

P.S. Because I'm in a silly mood, I feel the need to point out that neither film is a Witch movie, since neither of them involve Witches... unless you want to count Users, since their abilities border on what we would refer to as Magick.
