For one thing, eight hours is a really short time to get any work done in the Grid, especially if he has to travel a really long way to get to the exit portal. It seems like a dangerously short amount of time and feels very implausible that he would design it that way. I could imagine him getting maybe 5 hours of work out of every trip simply because of travel times. If I was going to be trapped forever if I didn't make it to a location on time, I'd sure as heck get there early!

Another thing is that if it was only 8 hours, When Flynn suggested they go to sleep for the night, that would basically mean giving up on any chance of getting Sam home. I have a hard time believing that either of them would totally give up that quickly. It had more of a "we'll talk about it in the morning" feel than a "sorry, it's too late, you're stuck here forever" feel.

A third reason it wouldn't work for me is that forcing the movie's story to take place in less than 8 hours really makes it feel small. Without a time limit I can interpret the events as taking 1.5-3 days giving the illusion of Sam was able to spend some signifigant time there.

I see your points. But to point 1, you are assuming that the transportation they used in the movie was the only kind of transportation that existed on the grid. I think they simply used the solar sailer so Clu wouldn't be able to find them. They were basically stowaways. I'm sure there were much faster alternatives available to Kevin before Clu turned bad.

Point 2, I think Kevin had given up. I mean, Sam certainly was at odds with his father's attitude regarding the whole thing.

I suppose to Point 3 it could seem small, but I think of it more as urgent. Going back to the original movie, time was of the essence then as well. Otherwise, are you suggesting Sam was constantly awake for what seemed to him to be 3 days?

For point 3, yeah, that's definitely just a personal preference.
For point 2, I guess it's partly my interpretation of how they played the scene, but it really felt like a "we'll talk more" moment.
For point 1, I'd be willing to entertain the notion, except we haven't seen anysign of faster transports. Even the jets and carrier didn't seem particularly faster.

Well, they certainly sounded like LOST writers in some of those answers. This whole notion of just putting questions out there without knowing the answers kind of messed up LOST for me when they didn't bother to answer some of the burning questions and passed them off as though they didn't matter!

It IS a cop-out. It's one thing to not reveal the answer and another not to have thought it through!

I liked the rest of the interview though.

They could have just said that the virtual to real world entity transfer had already occured in 1995 after SID 6.7 managed to escape the VR training system of The Law Enforcement Technology Advancement Centre and had to be neutralized by Lt. Parker Barnes.

Agreed.

This is not the true void. It is bewilderment...”
