TRON vs. TRON LEGACY?

on Sunday, December, 19, 2010 12:46 AM
In fiction circles, it's usually said that if you write something, and you give it to a group of other writers and/or editors, and half of them really love it and half of them really hate it, you've done a good job.

Having read the various complaints against TRON Legacy -- which have usually been couched in praise of the original TRON -- I'd just like to make a few points.

*** SPOILERS AHEAD, DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE SEQUEL! ***

The original TRON was never about TRON. The word "TRON" was a label for what has always been Kevin Flynn's tale. The movie opens with Flynn and it closes with Flynn. Alan Bradley (aka: TRON) is a supporting character. So dissing the sequel because TRON is not the main character -- while at the same time praising the original -- makes no sense. No sense at all. Who would have gone to see a computer movie called FLYNN in 1982? The title TRON immediately implied technology and futurism. Nothing more. And this is true for the sequel as well.

The TRON franchise faced the same problem as the Star Trek franchise: what do you do when your key actor(s) are in their 60s? There is really no way for the franchise to survive in 2010 (or beyond) focusing on Kevin Flynn or any of the other characters from the first film. Thus the primary purpose of TRON Legacy is not to spin a story about Kevin as much as it's about passing the franchise -- the story -- on to the next generation. Enter Sam Flynn, and the sacrificial demise of his father at the end of the movie. If you've spent any time examining story and structure, you saw it coming; it was both appropriate and expedient. The same is true for Tron's apparent demise, just after his circuits turn blue -- signalling his return to the good side.

The first film wasn't any more "deep" than the second film. It was a straight-up science fiction adventure, albeit in the "inner" space of the computer, not outer space with planets and starships. Slow moments in the sequel? What about how long it takes Kevin Flynn to actually get to his first battle, following his digitization in the first movie? What about the time spent on the Solar Sailer in the original? What about Flynn and Ram in the digital rubble heap, or so many other "slow" scenes? If anything, the sequel rockets us very quickly into the action. Both films are adventures set in an alternate reality none of us will ever see, because it's fantasy: an imaginary realm inside the computer. Attacking the sequel for plot problems seems a bit like attacking Wizard of Oz for the same reason. Oz wasn't a deep film, but it's cherished just the same.

Hedlund as Sam does just fine in his role. In fact, that he's a very understated version of the typical rebellious young man was refreshing -- he wasn't a snot and he wasn't a dummy. He was light-years better than Christian Hayden as Anakin, and his performance was right there with other young male actors in similar recent work -- like Star Trek. I thought he acquitted himself quite well, especially since he had to play off Bridges; who was doing his best to bring The Dude to his older, kinda crazy version of Kevin Flynn. In that sense Sam was remarkably serious and alert, while his dad had clearly gone a bit wonky after 1,000 cycles on The Grid. Olivia Wilde was at least as good as Cindy Morgan, and Jeff Bridges... well, let's just say he does a great job as the bad guy.

I keep trying to understand why people are picking on this movie -- especially when a lot of the "evidence" doesn't hold up. I'm not saying people who hate it can't hate it, I just wish they'd be honest and say, "This movie was not to my taste at all," rather than "this movie is awful and I have a bullet list the proves why." Again, in the fiction game, if lots of people like AND hate a thing, you're generally doing your job.order abortion pill morning after pill price where to buy abortion pillabortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion

I don't mind if anyone personally hated TRON Legacy....Just don't filibuster about it on the forums about your dislike. It's as if you are trying to pursuade those that liked the movie to roll over on it.

My thoughts precisely.

And I am glad some of what I am thinking and feeling, rings true for some of you.

I don't need everyone to like TL, but I would like it if some of the people who didn't like the movie would stop peddling so much negativity. I feel like, after 28 years, this should be a big party for ALL of us who love TRON. Alas, a few of us seem bent on being absolute party-poopers?

I just can't grok that!

Right on! I can't help but picture the grossly negative people as being yet another Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons saying "worst ... sequel ... ever."where to buy abortion pill abortion types buy abortion pill online

Excellent point Sub-Odeon....For those lamenting, think of this as a 28 year return to a film that will now be a franchise with the possibility of multiple films and an upcoming cartoon. That is something to be happy about despite the disappoinment you feel over the current film. This film is going to prove that we need more TRON so eventually something in the future that is TRON based will probably appeal to you.....I have faith, it's probably even statisticly probable.

Yes I see this movie getting a lot of hate. But I loved it! Disc battles, light cycles! Recognizer's the Light Sailer.... ! and worlds in t he grid were beautiful... a true vision of heaven.

Despite all the hate.. no one can deny Flynn was aweseome!
I loved how they connected what happened at Encom.... from the first one.

The first one will always be very powerful and full of emotion... but part of that is that I grew up with that movie. And it still affects me the same way...
The original Tron can never be duplicated.. and I think they people who wanted that are the ones who are hating on it..

I was very happy with the movie! Much better than i expected...
And I will go see many more times in 3D! waited over 20 years for this..
this is the event of a lifetime! So let's dress up in tron suits.. grab our disks..
and prepare for battle once again!!

PS: I do miss the MCP and Sark...

The MCP will always be the best villian ever created.. but Clu was awesome!
Never was expecting him to turn evil!!! that was really cool!!

Oh yeah and they did drink pure source.. aka alcohol in this movie!! awesome!! ha ha...

Gotta see it again... wore my Tron Shirt.. people liked it order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pill
