Box Office Chances

I apologize of this has been discussed here before, but I was wondering how you guys feel about the box office chances of TRON Legacy.

You don't have to give an exact prediction of how much you think it will make (although I am curious about how much you think it has to make in order to be considered a success given the size of its production and marketing budgets), but how big of a hit do you think it will be or won't be in general? What do you think are the factors/expectations affecting Legacy's potential success?

There is no denying that this film has a lot of hype, and that will only increase as the release date draws near, but it's hard to say how well it will do exactly. The first TRON, while successful, is more of a cult classic than a blockbuster. So Legacy is not a sequel/prequel to an already proven film franchise (like Harry potter or Star Wars as examples), and so we can't really look at the first TRON as a measure of success for this new one. Movies like Avatar (which had a similar release date to the upcoming TRON) and Inception were recent hits without being a part of or based on an already popular franchise, but they at least had the benefit of superstar directors at their helm (and high expectations as a result). There is also the competition to keep in mind, such as the next Chronicles of Narnia film being released the week before Legacy opens.

I think Legacy is going to be a hit, particularly if it is well received by critics and the movie going public, but who knows if that will happen obviously. If well received though Legacy has the potential to become the "must see" movie of the holiday season.

Greetings, Fellow Program Anon:

Personally (and I'll admit that this may be conjecture), I think TRON LEGACY will royally ROCK THE HOUSE when it comes out in theaters and de-rez its competition, LOL!!!!!! I mean, let's look at some of its competitors:
Saw 7 3D - I'm way past tired of this franchise; I mean, shouldn't Jigsaw and his minions be dead already????
Green Hornet w/Seth Rogen- trailer looks good and may be SOME competition;
SMURFS 3-D - Looks interesting and may be good with the Toy Story crowd; heck, I admit even I had a copy of that ColecoVision Smurf game and used to watch the cartoon sometimes back in the 80s;

Anyway, from all the pre-release and viral stuff I've seen, I'm hoping and thinking it will do well as it generally seems to pay alot of respect to the source material.

Also, one thing that exists now that didn't exist when TR1N came out is the amount of computer literacy - there are considerably more people now who are aware of computers (to some extent) compared to 1982 when only a select few were fortunate enough to buy, have, own, and know about home computers and computers in general.

Another key thing in my humble opinion that would be an element of TRON LEGACY's success (as is of any good Sci-fi or Horror Franchise or movie or story) is the ability for the audience to open its collective mind and understand all the symbols and metaphors being employed in the telling and exhibition of the story. To me, TRON and TRON LEGACY use similar techniques found also in classics such as Star Wars (Jedi/Lightsaber, Program/Identity Disc), Alice In Wonderland, Wizard of Oz, Greek/Roman Mythology (i.e. Sirens, how Flynn watches over in his safehouse is similar to Zeus on Mt. Olympus looking down on Greece, the gladiatorial games), Greek/Roman history, the themes of enslavement, tyranny, and freedom, the parallels between religious iconography and computer terminology, and the like. Time will tell. I'm glad that we've been blessed with someone like Steve Lisberger and Bonnie MacByrd, as well as Joseph Kosinski, Bruce Boxleitner, John Lasseter, Cindy Morgan, Jeff Bridges, and all the other great thespians, crewpeople, writers, and sci-fi folks out there to make this possible in this time and generation. I tell ya - the 80s were cool and the current time is interesting. . .where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill online

I really don't know what to think about how the film will do. When was the last time Disney had a non animated film in the theaters? The amount of merchandise being made makes me think it will get pretty big.

Then again, I never thought I would see the day when another installment of Tron would come out.

Does anyone know what movies Tron Legacy will be up against in December?

I think the movie will do VERY well, considering what's going up against it:

Narnia 3 (Converted to 3-D)
Gulliver's Travels, starring Jack Black (Again, converted to 3-D)
Yogi Bear (Filmed in 3-D?)

Given how most of those films will probably suck, I think most kids will go see Tron because of how cool it looks.

It comes down to the story. Nothing about Tron is groundbreaking in terms of visuals, so it all comes to the story.

Yes visuals are important, Transformers 3 looked great but that story.. anyway you get the idea.

You mean Transformers 2. TF 3 is out next year, lol. But yeah, I think the story sounds like it's going to be pretty solid, ESPECIALLY since they've got the main screenwriters from Lost, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, writing the movie.order abortion pill http://unclejohnsprojects.com/template/default.aspx?morning-after-pill-price where to buy abortion pill

Disney had Alice in Wonderland out earlier this year, and so far that is the highest grossing live action film of 2010. on line abortion pill misoprostol dose abortion medical abortion pill online

When will we see some of the trailers hitting out TV screens?

Also, does anyone know where I can find a list of true Imax theaters in my area? I went to an 'imax' before and it wasn't the real thing, too small.
