How is 7 on resources TronFAQ in your own opinion?

I can't believe how much system resources this Vista system snorts up it's nose. I need those resources for art creation!

Also how well does XP mode do with accessories like scanners? I've got an old Visoneer scanner that still has life in it, but the company is no more and Vista's XP mode doesn't work with it at all. My crumbling college laptop is the only way I can scan things.

I've read a lot of great things about 7. Been trying to find out as much as possible, both positive and negative about it cause right now I'm stuck playing the waiting game with a system that doesn't serve me well for what I need.

I got badly burned by Vista.

A lot better, I'd say. When I bring up the Task Manager and look at the Performance tab, I notice that a lot less memory is paged now (memory dumped to the hard disk swap file).

SuperFetch seems to be quite a bit less aggressive than in Vista. SuperFetch's job is to preload stuff in the background that it thinks you're going to use, so that when you do get around to loading it: it comes up almost instantly. It's a nice trick, making it seem like programs load faster. The problem in Vista was, the preloading was very noticeable. It gobbled up all the spare memory, and it caused your hard disk to grind away right after you reached the desktop.

In 7, it's still there but it's been toned down a lot. It waits longer before it starts preloading, and it seems to be smarter about it. It doesn't preload as much as Vista did. So that you don't end up dumping back out stuff from memory that you never ended up using, which became a waste of time to preload.

I can't say for sure, because I haven't used XP mode yet. But everything I've read, suggests that your scanner should work in XP mode.

After a while, I got used to Vista. But once I tried 7 . . . that was it. Good riddance. I won't miss Vista.

There's a cool new feature of Windows 7 that I forgot about. Well, kind of cool. I just hope that it doesn't lead to a reversal of the trend, of PC makers including better graphics cards/chips in their computers.

Win 7 will have a feature called WARP10. So, what the hell is WARP10 you ask? Other than sounding like something out of Star Trek?

WARP10 means that games written to use DirectX 10 (and I think 11) can run on DirectX 9 cards. And DirectX 9 games can fall back on and use software rendering, if you have a really low-end video card/chip. In other words, your CPU will assist or do most of the work when the graphics are drawn.

The idea is that if your video card isn't good enough to run the latest game, it will still run automatically. It just won't run as fast as it could.

So that means you won't have to immediately run out and buy a new graphics card, every time the latest game comes along. But you'll need a fairly powerful processor to compensate.

You could even run DX10/11 games in software mode only, but they'll run really, really poorly.

I think Microsoft is going to make WARP10 available on Vista at a later time, as well.

I thought for a moment when you mentioned Warp 10. I almost thought of Good old IBM OS/2 Warp when Microsoft was still working with Windows 3.1 and 3.11 for workgroups there. Man now I really feel old over here.

Compucore

VROOOOOOOOOMMMM!!!

To compute or not to compute that is the question at hand. Tis nobler to compile in C++ or in TASM.
