I think you're going to be dissapointed with the 3870X2 and Crysis - Crysis doesn't support Crossfire... But it sure sounds like a beautiful system and your selection of parts shows an attention to detail that is truly geekish

Of course, in single card mode, it's just fine with Crysis, but the whole point of it is that it's frustrating that it just doesn't work in the faster mode.

However given that it has been shown that Crysis was crippled for DX9 (so that DX-10 would actually seem more impressive) and that there was a deal with Nvidia to support their cards, I can't help but wonder if the failure of Crossfire was deliberate. It seems I'm not the only one who is suspicious of that.

I didn't know you could overclock a x6600 to 3.5 GHz.... Is there a stable upgrade (ie, Did intel submarket a higher chip like they did with the old PII 300's (really 450's) or does it need lots of extra cooling? )

You can get the Q6600 to work at 4Ghz but yet to find a way to make it stable. Crysis does support crossfire and sli but for some reason Crysis does seem to use it very well. In fact performace has been known to drop when using crossfire or sli.

3rd setback one of my RAM sticks doesnt work so I'll have to send them back. But for now I am getting the system up and running with the one stick that does work.

Your not the only one. I just bought another dell used for $100 CDN for it with a 2.4 on the CPU PIV. I know for sure that I will be neeeding to at least bring it to two gigs to make it acceptable like my thinkpad that I have over here. And maybe slowly transfering over some stuff over to it. But I have to find out since some of the generic brands of Ram for a clone computer may not work properl for a standard brand name machine. THe video card is definatel being change for the FX5200 that I have over here to play the game tron.

When I was at a clients place last night installing drivers for his new laptop running vista basic on it. I was about read to hurl that badly on it. I know now that I definately do not like vista. For me vista ver bad bad OS Don't like it too much over here. Windows so and so. but linux/unix preferred over here. I didn't have the heart to tell them how I didn't like it. I just mentioned in so many words that for me linux is a preferred OS. But others do like vista it is all depends on who and what you need with vista.

I need to look into upgrading my CPU and GPUs in the near future. Dual-core CPUs became accepted and have been utilized by game developers a lot faster than I ever expected. Also, 256MB on a bid card just isn't enough for newer games; 512MB is a must.

1GB is a must for animation . Unfortunately I have yet to have the money for a desktop computer(that runs well).

Had to change the cooler as well so I've gone for something else. Its a little larger than I expected as well but thats okay. That fits fine, might need to move the fan though.

Well, that sucks. But as long as everything works together properly...

A computer that can run crysis without breaking stride.....

Primus, Deus, Zeus, Jesus, whatever deity you wish to invoke. Tht's impressive.

As to OSes, vista doens't seem like something I would want. then again given I'd, up till today, been happily puttering around on an eight year old system seeing Tron on the loaner box my folks are letting me use is impressive. Can't even begin to imagian crysis at full with no lag.

I got my wish list that I'm going to save up for... might cost close to $5,000 but that is because I'm going to use it for 3D editing, video editing, making music, playing games/emus, etc...

I'll most likely just get a flat panel from viewsonic or dell.

But see, I'm also looking into buying a $3,000 video camera and thats not going to happen anytime soon... I wished I was rich..

My biggest concern is about AMD these days. They haven't been doing well in the market and that makes this 'AMD Fanboy' a little worried. They might be doing better now but 2007 wasn't a good year for the company.

My biggest complaint is how 3D GFX cards are so super expensive these days. I remember when the G-Force 3 sold around $300 and then when I got my G-Force FX 5980 ultra, it set me back about $400. Now the card I want will cost around $800 and should be SLI ready if I decide to expand on that.

One area I'm really happy about are the SoundBlaster cards these days. I can get a recent (X-Fi?) OEM for only $88... or add a few for their platinum models.

As for OS? I might wait for Windows 7 instead of buying Vista due to compatibility issues with all the money I invested in all my software. If M$ had any sense, they would have made 'backwards compatibility' as a major factor in their OS's because people like me invest a crap load of money on applications and games just to find out that they are useless when you upgrade to a new OS. However, XP is a great OS and I never had any real issues with it (that doesn't include Vundo and other crap floating around online).

Asus motherboards are the best for me because I never (and I mean NEVER) had any problems with their stuff and their firmware upgrades are simple to use and flawlessly installed (from my experience). BUT THEIR MANUALS SUCK!!!! Why can't they produce a decent manual and better explain their jumper settings? I hope they improved over the years since it's been about that long since I built my last computer.

Anyways.. I'm excited about building my next PC, but I'm very depressed because I'm so very poor right now. Hell, last week I put a Milk-Shake on lay-away. Maybe in a few weeks I can afford to buy it.

I was born with nothing... and I still have most of it left.

Right now the worst thing about PC gaming is the sorry state of backwards compatibility for early Windows games in both Nvidia's and ATI's drivers. Windows XP will happily run old Windows games - really, I love XP, it's the best OS ever - but the video card drivers simply don't have the support for the old games in them any more. Nvidia and ATI are even beginning to break compatibility with games that are only a few years old. There isn't any reason for breaking compatibility with any Direct X or OpenGL games, no matter how old, other than to save money by not having to maintain the driver code.

Meanwhile, thanks to the DOSBox team, even the oldest DOS games are completely playable; ironically, this is one of the best things about PC gaming.

Playing Wolfenstein 3D, Descent, Duke Nukem 3D, and Archimedean Dynasty is, to me, as much fun as playing TRON 2.0, Half-Life 2, Splinter Cell, and BioShock. There's no reason I shouldn't be able to enjoy playing Thief, Crimson Skies, and Aliens versus Predator as well, but they're virtually unplayable.

So, I'm leery of buying any new hardware because I'm concerned that I'll be losing the ability to play even more of my old Windows games in exchange for a few more FPS in the newest Windows games.

Please, post what you want. I'm using a OC'd system profile, saved in my software. My stock "singlecore" aqua-mark is 65,000.

This system is fine tuned to low temps on my processor and about 160 F. Vcard. They are both overclocked, and alg. tuned, with some tweaking.
