Wait, I was wrong. Atari's 1980-asomething arcade game "I-ROBOT" was the first, then there was S.T.U.N. RUNNER...

I think Starfox was the first console game to use polygons.

I'm sure that there were polygon-based computer games before (Microprose's fighter jet games, IIRC).
Heck, I think the folks at Argonaut behind StarFox made a polygon-based GameBoy game. IIRC, making that game (and developing the algorithms to do 3D polygon graphics on a GameBoy!) got them to thinking about making StarFox. Apparently, Nintendo was interested.

In any event, StarFox made a splash, and inspired Shigeru Miyamoto to think about polygon-based games, hence Super Mario 64.
So TRON is to Toy Story as StarFox is to Super Mario 64.

(Excuse me for going on about StarFox; it's one of the very few games I had the patience to play to an end. I am the anti-Todd)
