Nightmares

on Saturday, December, 15, 2007 4:11 PM
I have spent 3 days on my back this week due to a cold. Today I am watching HDNet and I saw a movie called Nightmares billed with four separate stories, including one starring Emilio Estevez as a "video gamer".

So, being bored, I watched.

Turns out the part he was in I had seen before and forgotten about. It's very much TRON inspired, and it's called The Bishop of Battle.

Emilio plays a kid who hustles for quarters to play a game called "Bishop of Battle" which looks like a TRON game. He's trying to get to the elusive Level 13. The Bishop in the game is the MCP face. This was totally inspired by TRON.

Well, he does get to Level 13 and when he does, let's just say it's TRON in reverse.

I found clips on you Tube for you to check it out. Take a look and see if you agree with me.

Part One
Part Two
Part Three

Love that segment of the film. Yes I agree, very Tronish in reverse.

Hope you get over your cold soon. That always sucks.

Here's the trailer for the film.where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill online

Thanks for the links, that was cool. A real callback to the 80s.

There was an arcade game from the 80s, maybe someone can remember the name, where the character challenges arcade gamers in a similar way. It includes the words "Is there no warrior mightier than I?"

I did some research on who did the animation for this and it turned out it was from Bo Gehring and Associates which was founded by an ex-MAGI employee.

The Bishop of Battle is one of those things burned into my brain from when I was a kid. Along with Tron, Automan, the Computers are People Too special, and some others. Bascially, anything with CGI in it was something I had to watch. And Tron is what started my obsession with CGI.

Unfortunately, these days, CGI in films is a dime a dozen. And what makes it worse - in a sense - is that nowadays CGI usually tries to emulate real life. While life-like CGI is cool in the sense of what it accomplishes, it's the early pioneering CGI that was decidedly NOT life-like that really interests me. I enjoy watching intentionally synthetic and unrealistic imagery, because it's far more striking and interesting.

Some folks were just discussing Bishop of Battle a couple of weeks ago in another thread. Because somebody is working on a Bishop of Battle game (along with The Last Starfighter), over at Rogue Synapse.

Hmm . . . curses. Now I want to see it again in higher quality. I haven't watched Bishop of Battle properly for years and years.

Now that I think of it, it was probably Space Fury.

Did any one here play Wizard of Wor in the arcades? I'm not familiar with it, but I checked it online and it's interestingly similar to Bishop of Battle but without the 3D perspective. Player has a gun in a blue maze, boss character has a voice synthesizer, level 13 is the difficult level, and the game's name is similar. BoB also has some elements of Centipede, Tempest, Berzerk, PacMan, RepoMan...

Sorry you're not feeling well, DaveTRON. I hope you're doing better for any family festivities you may have planned for Christmas.

Cool film, Bishop of Battle. I never saw it in the theater, but caught it on TV a few years later. Yep, very TRONish with the wire frame graphics and all... and that little bit-like sphere that was one of the baddies in the game.

That was an awesome time - the early 80's. TRON made me believe that 3D graphics like that would soon be in real video games (didn't realize it would take more than 10 years). Everyone had a walkman, or variation there of. I think it was more common to see people sporting walkman headphones back in the 80's than earbuds and MP3 players today. Computers were in the homes and an increasingly cool part of our lives. And there were a handful of films, like TRON and Bishop of Battle, that had us nerds and geeks just lighting up with excitement. It was the kind of thing I always wanted to happen to me... but it only happened on TV and in the movies. Oh well.

The actual face of the Bishop of Battle himself looks a lot like a face that quickly flashed across the screen in the MAGI (or maybe it was Tripple-I) demo on the TV special Computer are People Too (also on our TRON DVD extras). Watch the demo and you'll see a quick succession of 3D wire frame faces in part of the demo, almost looking like they're projected from one point where they are via vector lines looking similar to light from a projector (if that makes any sense). I wonder if one of those exact wire frame faces became the Bishop.

Yeah, it was the Triple I Demo.

Man, that was awesome (clip 3). But those arcade machines were really taking a beating. That gun was totally awesome, I originally thoght it was a gun for Operation Wolf..

The machines exploding made me think of this story regarding the special plastic Duramold cabinet for the game "Blaster":

"The Duramold cabinets, now those were cool. Problem was, they had a tendency to shrink so that the operators eventually couldn't open the coin door. Well, there was one reported incident of a Duramold cabinet that, because of the shrinking, put so much pressure on the game monitor that it shot the monitor right out of the cabinet. The monitor flew across the arcade and reportedly destroyed a Donkey Kong Jr. machine." -Eugine Jarvis

So, where can I play Bishop of Battle? I need a refreshing dose of 80's nostalgia, anyways...

Love the gun though. Who knew they had IR vector graphics games back then?

One thing I LOVE about 80's movies is the "tough guy" dress. Back then I'm sure it was very intimidating, but now it makes them look like serious pansies

Great find. I had a cold too, Dave, so I feel your pain.

Ya know, I'm kinda surprised that Sega didn't whip out a Sega CD game based on this about 15 years later. The gun is a modified version of the Battlestar Galactica lazermatic from Mattel. As for the remake, it is on hold a bit. I was working frantically on it and another movie project came along (The Altar of the Unnamed, also about a possessed arcade machine but an original game concept), so BOB got temporarily shelved. If of interest, you can check out our MySpace blog for RogueSynapse that has some updated shots of the game thus far. Got into place all models and animations, firing algorhithms, pathfinding (array mapped- fast), and multiple enemies in play.

That's a cool little short story, kinda makes you think. Although, the movie it's from kinda feels like a "Twilight Zone" ripoff.

Just played some Sega CD games...

It seems that the scene where the game comes to life would fit the system perfectly.
