My long search is finally over!

on Friday, December, 29, 2006 5:01 PM

the most amazing thing happened today:

first, I collected all the money I had saved since my 17th birthday [6th may] and combined it with the money I recieved over christmas, and realised that I have amassed around £600
then, my current personal computer literally blew up

THEN i was informed that I was allowed to buy a new one rather than repair the old one

then I saw an advert on TV for a suitably powerful PC that has had £200 knocked off the price and now costs £499

long story short, i'm getting a new PC tomorrow with the following specifications:

Dual Core 2.8Ghz intel Pentium D processor
1Gb DDR Ram
200Gb Hard Drive
DVD RW
512Mb Graphics in a Geforce 7300LE
Windows XP Media Centre Edition [with the promise of a free upgrade to vista home premium]and a free 19" Flat panel monitor

I will finally be able to play Elder Scrolls:Oblivion on at least medium settings!

YAY for me!

Hrmm.. When I was a kid, and it was my money, I don't remember having to get permission to spend it on things. Within reason.

Maybe things are different these days

that is convenience if you tell me. I mean I think the chances of this all hapening in one day are about

chances: (this is mathematical )

okay so first we need to find out how much money you got per year since your 17th birthday and over christmas, so 600/17~35

odds now = 1 in 35

chances of your computer blowing up are safety guarantee (99.9%) x explodable components in computer (average 6)

~600 600x35=21000

odds now = 1 in 21000 big now neh?

chances of being allowed to buy a new one: 1 in 2

2 x 21000 = 42000

odss now = 1 in 42000

chances of you have satellite or cable: 1 in 2

now the odds go in two directions

if you have cable, which, as far as I know, generally has around 120 channels: 1 in 120

1 in 5,040,000

chances of advert appearing, depends on number of commercials per day. Which is about 144. so 1 in 144.

odds now: 1 in 72570000

chances of the price being knocked off, lets say 1 in 10.

1 in 725700000

chances of a windows vista guarantee: 1 in 30

odds for cable: 1 in 217,728,000,000

odds for satellite: (the same but with 500 channels and the chances of you having reception at the time is 3 in 4 which goes to twelve.)

your odds:

cable: 1 in 217,728,000,000 or 217.728billion

satellite: 1 in 10,886,400,000,000 or 10.8864trillion

just for fun, I'll throw in the chances of you ever existing (which are 1 in 6billion)

Now your odds are:

cable: 1 in 1,306,368,000,000,000,000,000 or 1.306368septillion

satellite: 1 in 65,318,400,000,000,000,000,000 or 65.3184octillion

two words: divine intervention

I would agree with you on this one within reason of course. Depending on what it is too. In this case a new computer was needed due to old exploding one. I know eventualy if and when I get the money for a new computer over here. It'll be good and fast for what I need it for. No joke around and no windows on it at all. By then I'll have all my compuers running linux including that one. For some I know windows will be windows of their choice or Mac flavoured OSX if your using a mac. I'm always surprised personally over here almost every year or couple of years I always some how check to see on how much it would cost me to built one from scratch a clone computer. Somehow it always for me being way too expensive. IN the sum of a minimum of 10K easily without much thinking of course. And that is the middle of the road with the hardware that I am looking at. Where it can be easily used for both windows and Linux environment. And maybe just maybe twin large monitors to boot too.

I'll try and just replicate a sample of what I had done one time just to give an idea of the hardware only. without the software at all being there.

End of line

Compucore

VROOOOOOOOOMMMM!!!

To compute or not to compute that is the question at hand. Tis nobler to compile in C++ or in TASM.

well, not so much parental permission, more parental blessing.

My brother seems to constantly buy and sell things on eBay (quite often he'll buy something and then sell it a week later). He seems to send or receive a parcel pretty much every other day!

I buy stuff occasionally (but not all that often), usually online. Because my parents know that I don't buy random crap, they don't mind if I don't ask them - I just hop online and buy with my own money. Hell - when I bought all four Tron Medicom Kubrick sets from TimothyC here on the Sector, my parents never knew a thing until they saw four conspicuous black boxes with all over them; and even then they didn't mind!

Sometimes I feel a little guilty though - I know some people whose parents rarely let them buy anything at all.

It's worse than that, not only do I not get to buy anything, my parents won't let me get an account. I really am not allowed to leave the house. Mainly because I don't have any local friends. My best friend lives, what, 30-40 miles away.
