Network problems

Recently I've been having a problem with the wireless network in our house. There are three computers on the network: mine, my brother's and my mom's.

My brother's computer very rarely gets disconnected from the network, and when it does it is only briefly. My computer seems to spend 5 minutes on the network at low signal strength, and then disconnects for a minute (although today it seems to be doing the inverse), and my mom's computer barely ever gets connected at all.

It could be due to distance from the router, but in the past I usually got very good or excellent signal strength, and this problem has never occured before. I have only recently built my mom's computer, but I think I was having the problem before that. The only other thing I can think of is IP addresses - my brother's is 192.168.0.2, mine is 0.3 and my mom's is 0.4. Is there any kind of priority for IP addresses?

But anyway, I've tried everything and nothing seems to work. Any help would be greatly (and I mean greatly - this is really annoying!) appreciated!

Nope.

Something really simple you can try (though I doubt it will help much), is to adjust the position of the router if you can. Try rotating it, or moving it higher or lower.

I know it sounds crazy, but adjusting the physical location of the router can help a bit with the signal strength.

Also, have you added anything recently that could be causing interference? A cordless phone? etc etc?

We've had cordless phones for a while - about as long as we've had wireless internet. Other than that... no, I don't think so.

Depends on the brand, the model, and the age of the router.

It really does sound like it's a problem with the router itself.


I have a really horrible Linksys router that just outright sucks to the point that it literally blocks internet access off. I'm planning on getting a much better wireless router for my family to replace that troublesome router.


You might want to look up your brand/model # online and see if there's any issues associated with it. If there are, they probably have a solution to it. I think it very probably is the router, because at a LAN party, I took the router along, I was connected by wireless (about a foot away from the router) and the other two people were connected via patch cable, and all three of us were disconnected at the same time, frequently.

There is that like Kia said. Which is very good sage advice there Kia I would have done that too. As well while you are at the routers website. Check to see for firmware upgrades. I had received a notice through a reliable source that there was a hole on certain models of routers. It was mainly a security issue related to the admin to the router itself. Where if they knew IP address to your cable or dsl connection they could easily get access to your network if the admin passwrd was left blank and highly suggested to make sure that the admin password was changed to something that you had chosen. and if there are anything any add on's to the router. get it patched and make sure that the router has the latest firmware in there. This was a few months ago. I had already done it myself over here as well on mine and was painless. I just followed the instructions on how to do it. And worked after the installation was complete. Rebooted it and it was fine.

That was actually pretty good advice - turns out that that make of router has problems all the time, and changing the channel and having a fixed IP usally solves the problem. So I'll just wait for a bit, and if it doesn't disconnect, I'll assume it's working again. Thanks, Kia, for that astoundingly obvious advice that I, being my illogical self, didn't think of!

Actually, that's not as crazy as it sounds. You see most wireless routers and access point's antennae dont transmit their signal in a perfect shere, rather, the signal pattern is more eliptical in shape. Also, your router's radio only has limited power, because of this, the signal has trouble gettign through things like masonry (bricks and cinder blocks) as well as walls with pipes in them.

You could also consider an aftermarket antenna or repeater, though the latter can be a bit pricey.

I had to flash my Linksys' firmware at one point with a patch.. other than that I have had no problems with it. Even with the PSP. Maybe you got a lemon? (Or different model? Mine's a Wireless-G model.. probably about three years old now.)

It's a wireless b model; befw11s4. (From maybe two years ago.)

HUGE lemon. So many people were angry about that particular brand, Bongo. Firmware updates were royally useless on that thing because it would still lock up randomly. (First time I poked it to set permissions, it locked up completely on me and wouldn't let me back in. So I got angry and reset it to factory settings.)

Right now, my computer is hooked up to a very stable d-link wired router that my fiance recommended about a year before the lemon my dad decided to get on his own. :P (Motto: I am never letting my dad buy anything electronic without a well researched review again.)

NoExcuses-- Wow, I'm surprised that helped! Let's hope your router isn't as bad as my wireless one. :B (That is if the firmware update fixes what went wrong with it.)
