I am playing this right now on the X-Box and am somewhat disappointed in it. I am comparing it to Half-Life 2 and it’s coming up short in many ways. I think the game looks great, and I can sense the humor that’s there (with the PDA audio logs and whatnot), but the game play is what has left me feeling something is missing.
1) Everything is always in total darkness. You have a flashlight, but when things jump out at you, you have to put it down and get your weapon. That leaves you firing randomly in the darkness at something you can’t see. It was a novelty at first, giving a sense of ambiance, but this has now been going on for several levels and has become an irritation instead of challenging. In Half-Life 2 your light was on your suit, so you could have it on, and fire a weapon at the same time.
2) The scenery isn’t changing. I’ve been in this cramped mars complex with the SAME background and same scenery for many many levels now. Half-Life 2 put you in multiple environments, in multiple vehicles, and gave you the feeling you were in this huge vast wide open world. In Doom 3, I am starting to feel claustrophobic.
3) Lack of different weapons. So far I have the machine gun and shotgun. They keep throwing new and tougher monsters at me, but I don’t seem to be getting any aid in the fight. I read part of a walkthrough that said that early in the game you could get the chain gun, but with this convoluted series of events that I apparently missed.
My question is this, to people who have played it. Does the game remain in darkness the WHOLE game? Do you get to experience different environments, vehicles and situations other than “Enter Room: Monster Spawns: Kill Monster: Leave Room”? Can I actually get different weapons if I missed them earlier in the game, or was that my one and only chance to get the chain gun?

The game isn't always in total darkness, there are better lighted areas later. You get to go outdoors for brief moments, and later you end up in underground caves. But, a significant portion of the game is dark, yes.
It takes a long time before you finally start acquiring more than just a couple of weapons. For at least half the game, I'd say you're stuck using the more basic weapons (pistol, shotgun, chaingun).
Also, the game is full of "monster closets". Where some goodie is sitting there waiting for you, and when you take the bait the monsters pop out and go "boo". I really don't like games where you can tell you just crossed the invisible line that triggers the enemy spawners.
You're citing all the same reasons as to why I wasn't impressed with Doom 3, either.

get Doom 3 for PC then download the duct-tape and gravity gun mods.
All that is visible must grow beyond itself, and extend into the realm of the invisible

That's probably the sole reason I'll end up buying Doom 3.

After whining about not getting additional weapons, I picked up the Chain gun and Plasma Rifle in the same gaming session last night
Ask and ye shall receive I guess. Of course, the monsters are a lot tougher now, and I still find myself fighting them in the dark, which is all sorts of frustration for me.

i wouldn't do that if i were you, Doom 3 and Half Life 2 have very different formulae. half life 2 is vast and open, Doom 3 is dark, claustrophobic, and scary.

you do get to experience various environments in later levels of the game: you get sent to hell, there is an archeological dig site [in the last 2/3 levels] and there are some underground caverns.
there are no drivable vehicles in doom 3 other than an electric tram/lift
when playing through the game again, and you come across the martian buddy cabinates, the code is 0508, if i remember correctly
also, there's a section with a scientist trapped in a chamber, and you have a panel saying "activate" or "open", if you click "open" and let the scientist, you'll get a PDA that will grant you access to the BFG 9000 earlier than normal
hope that helps!
of course, that is in the PC version, it might be a bit different in the xbox version [i wouldn't know, having only played it on the PC] words of wisdom from...

I am going to take back my initial assessment of this game.
I just got back from Hell, and I do have to say Hell was quite cool. I have gotten used to the darkness and the monsters spawning behind my back all the time (I just reload the Quicksave and do it again )
But Prankster Bit is right; this is supposed to be an interactive horror game. Things happen on purpose to scare you, and I do have to admit I have jumped more than once.
It's fun, and I actually do like it after all. And all I can say is I REALLY hate those Mancubuses.

For the X-Box? I know there was "Resurrection Of Evil" that came out for the X-Box, but to be honest... I probably won't play it.

Well, finished it tonight. It was OK, and I'm glad the final boss wasn't that hard.
I don't know if it's because of my age, or what, but I find that I am SO relieved when the final boss is not im-friggin-possible (Half-Life, the first Ratchet And Clank, Doom II, etc etc)
By the time I get to the end, I am READY for the end, and just kind of want to move on. I think having a Boss you can whoop and just end the game on a decent note is more satisfying than having to sweat blood over (or resort to cheats) to defeat them.
I know die-hard gamers might have a different take on this.

I love Doom3. I'm a long-time Doom fanboy (I've got all the Doom games, I've got the Doom boardgame, the Doom RPG cellphone game, and the 4 Doom novels from the mid-90s), and Doom3 is still my #2 Xbox game of all time.where to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online

Just curious, are you playing on an LCD or similar monitor, rather than CRT? I've heard very bad things about playing dark shadowy games on LCDs and probably Plasma, too. I agree it was dark, but I played on PC on CRT and was okay with it. The flipping betw/ flashlight and weapons was annoying though.
I never finished this game. It bored me too much after a while (same 3 or 4 enemies; same 'open door and enemy pops out or spawns behind you' nonsense; etc. There were definitely some creepy moments in the game, though.
I think it's somewhat unfair to try and compare D3 to HL2. HL2 is obviously a better production in terms of level design, artistic direction, physics, etc. But I hear D3 was kinda just released to get the graphics engine out there and introduced... for future games/mods to take advantage of? I could be wrong. Whatever the reason, the gameplay, level design, etc. in D3 doesn't seem like it was incredibly important to them. Then again, the original Doom was nothing more than rooms and corridors of creatures; so maybe they were mirroring that to pay hommage.
I'm getting out of here right now, and you guys are invited. -----^ |
