So, one afternoon of MMOing, my main server crashes. And since I paid for the day at that gaming store, I immediately hop on one that isn't dead and cook up a new character to kill time with.
For those of you who play/care, he's an Energy/Energy blaster. His name is Recognizer.

That is a popular misconception regarding MMOs. When you pay the fee, you're not paying for the game (you already did that when you bought it) you are paying for the services that are required to keep that game up and running.
MMORPGs have three main pieces of overhead they must take care of servers, bandwith, and staff. The server porttion is rahte self explanitory, the MMO publisher needs several servers located strategiaclly throuhout their target market area that are capable of handling the loads that several hundreds of thousands of users will put on them and that takes some serious computing power and storage.
MMOs also require a mind blowing amount of bandwith to keep things moving to and from these servers (I'm talking 100's of Megs of it or more). The only way to get this kind of speed is to make a deal with a major telecom backbone company, which doesn't come cheap.
MMOs also need a sizeable suppourt staff, not jsut to suppourt and maintain the servers but also to support the user base as well. These user support people can be most accurateley described as part supercop and part mommy. They not only monitor for abuses of the system (hackers, gold farmers) but they also give support to users with in game problems (such as being harassed by another player).

I played CoH/Cov since the release but ive recently run outta money, im contemplating getting a couple timecards to play for a bit. donate to the fund! fit74@sbcglobal.net! paypal it! Monthly fees suck, it was 20.00 for a week in Star wars galaxies, fun but expensive. If more people would play phosphor that would be cool. Even better if there was a server hosting website, like they give you an IP address to play from. That would rock.
