Dragon*Con ... anyone going?

on Thursday, August, 24, 2006 11:05 AM
There's probably an old thread about this somewhere, but I couldn't find it. I just wanted to see if anyone else from the sector is going to Dragon*Con in Atlanta during the Labor Day weekend.

For anyone within 6 hours of Atlanta, I would definitely recommend going. It's easily the largest Sci-Fi/fantasy show in the country and offers a whole lot more than your standard comic-con. There aren't 50 or 60 people walking around in crazy costumes, there are hundreds and hundreds !

If anyone from the sector is going lmk. I'd really like to meet you and say hi for a minute. I'm meeting a bunch of friends there and plan on partying the entire weekend myself .

I went to one with my Dad. He knows Atlanta better than I, plus he has more experience with Atlantas world famous traffic. It was cool. Saw one person with a Tron shirt on and wondered if it was someone from here. Had a blast. I've never seen so many stromtroopers before in my life! I must say it's a sight to see a whole group of them standing outside with their helmets off having a smoke. The amount of cool stuff for sale makes your head spin and your wallet cry. Could only stay for one day cause of classes, but it was really awsome.

Well D*C 2006 was nothing short of fantastic! Thousands and thousands of geeks and freaks roaming three hotels until the wee hours of the morning every day. For those of you who wonder what type of costumes you missed, check out the link below. It's to a webshots folder that has 150+ pictures taken by friends that I was with. We'll be adding more photos over the coming week as well.

I remember hearing about it too I think it was last year or the year before about a something con. We had a whole slew of pictures in that there somewhere about the different costumes that were worn to it. A lot of people dress up for that every year. Some of the costumes that were worn were fantastically done both for the men and women. I remember going to a few myself up here but they were science fiction ones. Something equivilant to the dragonCon one. It was amazing. When I went to my last one where I met up with Mark Lenard. Spocks father and a romulan enemy from the original series. I nearly lost an eardrum from a girl who scremed threee feet away from my ear. Thought I lost my hearing or at least got a good cleaning of the ear canal.

What exactly do people do at Dragoncon? I went to a Trekkie convention once but this looks more like a big costume party, akin to Cosplay which from what I heard from people who go is usually an excuse to satisfy some deep dark fantasies behind closed doors.abortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion

THat basically the general idea of any of them Usually around a general theme. Whether is a Star Trek, DragonCon. I had just did a general search here and we still have a listing of Female Cosplay from last year. Some of the pictures are broken due to some of the web addresses are no longer in their original server.

I think a better question is, "what can't you do at D*C?" Seriously there are planned activities from 10am through 1am or later every day of the con. After that people just wander about through the lobby levels having a good time. Not only is there something new somewhere every 30 minutes or hour, but you literally have 30+ different things to choose from every 30 minutes. The D*C schedule is a must or you would never know what's going on.

For example, there are different 'traks' you can follow while you are there. If you followed the Trek Trak you would have attented the actor Q&A sessions (I saw the one with Denise Crosby aka "Tasha Yar"), various Star Trek related discussion panels, the klingon beauty pageant, late night critiques on special effects in the series, etc. etc. etc. You could litereally immerse yourself in Star Trek stuff for the weekend.

It was that way for nearly 30 other traks! You could have spent the whole weekend attending everything the 'podcasting' trak offerred. There were several anime related traks and of course a Star Wars trak. The point is, I was busy as a bee most of the time and I probably only saw 2% of the actual activitites. Other than the few things that I really wanted to see, I mostly hung out with my group in the lobby taking pictures with the freaks. People watching at something like this is a blast .

If that's still not enough, you could spend an entire day going through the dealer rooms (I found some vintage Star Wars MOC figures for peanuts ). In addition to that the hotel itself is a non-stop party. Sunday night we crashed some party on floor twenty that had setup a full bar inside with free drinks. Needless to say we stayed for quite a while .

See, that's exactly what I mean. I know they had this *awesome* robot battle area but I never saw it and had no idea where it was. I would have liked to, but I was probably too busy drinking and posing for pics (yeah, I had a costume one day). I definitely saw some stormtroopers there. Even saw two different PimP Troopers while I was there ! Check the link above as a few more from my group added pics. There are now nearly 300 pics in my webshots folder from the event.

Sadly I won't be able to go next year. I'm flying to Los Angeles for Celebration IV and then to London weeks later for Celebration Europe. Considering what those two events are going to cost, I know there's no way I'll be able to go to D*C. I'm *definitely* going in 2008 though :^).
