Atari 2600 Tron Mockups

on Thursday, August, 10, 2006 11:46 AM

Sorry if this has been posted before. I was surfing around and found a forum where they were taking a poll on which Arcade Games that were never ported to the Atari2600 should have been. Tron Won!

Anyway someone did these AWESOME mockups and I thought I would share...

Those are cool. You can make Homebrew Atari Games. Somebody should run with this one for sure.

That would be sooo cool if it could be done.

Considering the size restraints of 2600 games, would it be possible to have all four games on one cart? Granted, the games are relatively simple, but then so was the 2600

COOL!

Awesome Arari TRON game mock-ups!

Only the grid bugs would have likely been a single color each, otherwise that is probably very close to what it would have looked like! And I would have bought it and played it until my fingers bled!

I actually own the light cycle game... it's called "Surround". It's not as cool as light cycles, but looks very similar, only instead of light cycles, the players control - you guess it, BLOCKS! It was pretty cool though. I loved playing it. What sucked is that there was no AI player. You could only play against another live player and I didn't know many people who would play the game with me.

Man, how did Atari never produce that game?

Yes, I believe it would be possible. With some of the larger Atari games, like Pitfall II, they used a trick called "bank switching", where the game literally has multiple ROM banks that the Atari can load upon command. Think of it as multiple games within a single cartridge. This would indeed have been possible, though likely expensive at the time. Still, whatever they charged for it, I would have mowed a zillion lawns to afford my copy if necessary! That's how I paid for my Atari games back in the day - lawn mowing. I hated it, but it brought me some money.

Man, whoever did those mock-ups did an awesome job. You could believe those were real!

Yeah, I could totally see a Tron game like that working on a 2600 system, even back then. They had tricks to increase the amount of memory if the game got too big. But as TheReelTodd said, it added to the cost of the cartridge. Still, I think a Tron game like that would have been a smash hit anyway. Even if it cost a little more.

I'm not a programmer myself but those interested could check it out. I've got a firend who's super into Atari's and programs some homebrew stuff for digital poetry art projects so it can be done...

I'm sorry....once I saw Atari 2600 this song started playing in my head. Now it's your fault, 'cause it's going to be in my head the rest of the day.

Well like any other game or programs in any operating system you need some compilers of some sort in order to do that. In this case it might be assembler of some sort. Then we need to know what kind o CPU is in there. and keep it extremely tight. that it squeaks worst than metal on metal. I think some of these games were what no more than 4K each I believe. so programming it that small is extremely tight. And probably a motorola 6507 processor.

VROOOOOOOOOMMMM!!!

To compute or not to compute that is the question at hand. Tis nobler to compile in C++ or in TASM.
