Spirited Away is amazing

OK, I know Spirited Away isn't a current film but I only saw it for the first time yesterday and just wanted to mention it because it's pretty amazing.

Also there is a TRON connection - John Lasseter (director of Toy Story) is a fan of the director, Miyazaki, and he introduces the film in the double disc version. AND Lasseter is of course on the TRON dvd saying how the CGI inspired him to push on with that new way of working.

Really bizarrely, I'm reading Droidmaker at the moment (good book if you're interested in the history of CGI) and I've just reached the part where Lasseter is trying to get Disney to develop CGI techniques after TRON.

Anyway, Spirited Away is a truly spectacular film that really stays with you. You don't have to be a fan of Japanese animation to enjoy it (I know very little about it). It's really a film for anyone that likes fantasy with depth.

I really liked Spirited Away. It really kept my attention with all the majorly weird stuff going on. I think I liked No Face the best. I need to watch it again, but it really was a great movie.

Howl's Moving Castle, on the other hand, was pretty feeble in comparison. The story seemed a bit stunted, it wrapped up too neatly, and I was kind of left with a sense of "Yeah, whatever...."

I too am a fan of Mr. Miyazaki's work. Spirited Ayaw left me with a good impression. I also really enjoyed Princess Mononoke.

Any of you have kids? My little girl watches Spirited Away from time to time. I too am really impressed with it. If you get a chance, watch the 2nd disk featurette on Studio Gibli. It gave me a whole new level of appreciation for Miyazaki's work.

Those artists are incredibly dedicated to their craft.

The sound guys even got the exact same car they animated in the movie just because they wanted to get the right sounds. Any car door closing sound would pass in an animation but they insisted of having that exact car.

I have seen this movie and Howl's moving castle and I think of them as two of the best movies I have ever seen. They both had excelent plots. But if I had to pick, I'd say Spirited Away was better.

that was another good film, based on a Tezuka Manga which was in turn bsed on a classic American Sci-fi movie from the 1920's

I liked No Face too, Boingo_Buzzard. He was really mysterious. I think he was meant to be a kind of mirror feeding off people's emotions. Hence when everyone got greedy he got greedy too and turned monstrous and vice versa.

Yes, the 2nd disk is interesting, RedShoe. Seemed a fairly small set up when you conside the scale of the movie. I was surprised to see actors recording lines to finished animation as usually the voice track is recorded first and then animation begins, synched to that track.

I enjoyed the various cooking bits too! Miyazaki boils up some mean noodles!

While that is usually true, often dialog is re-recorded to the finished animation in a process called "Dubbing", offically known as "Automated Dialog Replacement" or "ADR".

ADR is used all the time in live-action films. Usually because the sound recorded on location is poor quality (traffic noise, wind noise, aircraft flying over head). And, of course, if an animation film is being dubbed into a foreign language actors will speak alongside the finished animation. I just couldn't work out why the actors were recording lines alongside the animation in its original language. There must have been a guide track to work to in the first place. Afterall, the animators can't guess how the actors are going to speak the lines! I've written for quite a few TV animation series and the recording of the voice track is always the first thing completed after scripting is done and then animators work to synch their animation to that. Hmm. Puzzling.
