Happy Fourth Of July!

on Friday, June, 30, 2006 10:14 PM
I'm heading off to the sack to catch some zee's so I'll be fresh for my trip to D.C. early tomorrow morning.

This'll be my first trip so I'm very excited to be going, especially since I'll be there for Independence Day. That's like being in Times Square for New Year's Eve (which I've done twice.)

No way I can see everything or even get close to seeing everything in just a few days, but I'm going to cram in what I can.

What am I most excited to visit? The Smithsonian Air & Space Museum! I've been dreaming about visiting that place since I was a kid. YES!

Enjoy your holiday, my fellow Americans. And to those of you who think you don't have a 4th of July, I suggest you take another look at your calendar!

Seriously, have a great weekend either way. Later!

The Smithsonian Air & Space Museum is one of my favorites! I've been there 3 times in my life (last time in 1994). It is one HUGE, larger than life place of American aviation history and all around COOLNESS!

Have yourself a great time and a safe trip.

Happy Independence Day to you too!

Hehehe... I forgot to print out the directions on Mapquest and decided to sneak over here while they're printing out.

You've been there three times? Awesome! I'm going to split my visit between the original museum and the new Udvar-Hazy Center. I've only got one day to devote, but I'm gonna try to buy a lot of souvenirs!

Have a safe trip MM... Wished I was going to D.C. for the 4th.

And Happy 4th of July to everyone....

It's the day that we won a formable war against our soon-to-be best friends and became the U.S.A.

It's also the day we celibrate when Will Smith saved us all from aliens. That was before he joined the MIB.

Woohoo!

I had an AWESOME Independence Day!

My wife and I stood on the steps of the National Archives for the dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence.

We sat on the steps of the National Archives for the Independence Day Parade.

We explored the Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the National Mall.

We watched A Capitol Fourth - America's Independence Day Celebration, live from the steps of the Capitol.

Finally, we watched the fireworks display over the Washington Monument at the other end of the National Mall from the steps of the Capitol. We could see clearly all the way across the Mall. It was an awesome show!

Oh, and there was all the museum-visiting and monument-visiting and fabulous restaurant dining we did.

Pictures of massive flying things hanging from ceilings to come!

Yes, it was a great Independence Day weekend for us. My personal best-ever, for sure.

Hope you all enjoyed yours!

Ran out of ink, you say? Buy a refill at the Fisher Space Pen web site! That's where I buy mine.

Iwent there once on a school field trip in fifth grade (yes it was a cross country field trip ) I got to ride the flight simulator! It was so awesome!!! It was like bbeing virtualized into an actual game! The models are life sized too! Iliked going inside the spaceship. The really famous female pilot, (forgot her name ), was a flight instructor to my mom, she used to fly Biplanes. They say one day we'll get one of our own and test it out at our grandparents ranch in Colorado. I will REALLY like that.

Haaaaaaaaa!

Great photos of aviation and space exploration history at the NASM, MutoidMan!

I'm sorry I missed these over a MONTH ago. You should have started a new thread dedicated to the NASM. Been so busy lately, I've been missing a lot of threads through, I'm sure.

Many of the photos are much like I remember the museum when I was last there in 1994. I had the privilege of going to the NASM in 1980, 1984, and 1994. It's such a cool freakin' place, as you now know for yourself! But I really don't care for D.C. How damn annoying it is to walk about and be constantly bothered by people trying to hand you pamphlets on this political group or religious group or nut-ball whatever. I wish they wouldn't allow that kind of thing - solicitors standing at every national attraction, just waiting to get in your face and hand you some BS literature and spiel about... never mind. Getting OT. Just annoying and that really sticks out in my mind from my 1994 trip to D.C. Tell me that has been cleaned up, please.

I remember many of the attractions in your photos. My favorite attractions are probably the space vehicles and satellites. I loved the replicas of the moon lander and rockets. And it was cool as hell to see the actual capsules that returned to earth (which you don't have any close-ups of - shame on you).

When I first went to the NASM, the space shuttle model had the old painted-white fuel tank. In fact, our parents bought my brother and I small Space Shuttle toys made of metal and plastic. It came with the white fuel tank, booster rockets, and the orbiter itself. They were pretty small, about 4 inches tall (the largest part), but they were really cool. The fuel tank and booster rockets could be separated, so I simulated many shuttle lift-offs. I wish I still had that little gem... perhaps I do somewhere, packed away in some old box of childhood memories. I'll have to look around some time.

You got some great shots of the model rockets, complete with close-up shots of the little figures under them. I remember thinking (in 1980) how cool it would have been to take those model rockets out and play with them. They would have made kick-ass toys!

No photos of Skylab? I remember watching the stories about Skylab on the news in the 70's. Dad even bought me a Skylab pop-out book - fascinating stuff. It was (I think) the world's first fully functional orbiting space station. I loved the full-size replica at the NASM with it's floating astronauts inside. It had a see-through walk-way if memory serves... or perhaps it was just like a catwalk? Foggy on that one. But it was really cool to walk inside it.

Oops - just scanned the photos again - saw the Skylab photo behind the Tomahawk and other rockets. Yep - nice long line to get inside Skylab - that's just how I remember it too!

The starship Enterprise from the original series was originally hanging from the ceiling near the cafeteria entrance when I first went to the NASM in 1980. I can't remember how it was situated in '84 and '94, but it looks like it is now enclosed within a protective casing. Probably a good thing to keep it protected from the elements. I also remember thinking how cool of a toy that would have made too. It was bigger than I expected it to be when I saw it.

That place is so enormous, one can just get lost for hours in there. So many things to see and read and do there. That is my favorite museum in all of D.C., and probably all of the country (though I have not been to many). It is just larger than life and full of coolness!

Oh, you did pick up some packages of freeze-dried ice cream right? That stuff didn't taste too good as I remember, but it was really cool to eat freeze-dried food like they did in space... well it was really cool to a 10 year old me. If I went back today, I'd probably buy more and enjoy the odd tasting stuff. Actually, the strawberry didn't taste too bad.
