Are you kidding? Although the anime and mange genre was around before this film, it's intense popularity in the US pretty much caused the anime explosion of the 90's. I think all anime/manga based projects popular today in some way should consider Akira their grandfather.

Steamboy, the newest Otoro film since Akira, is also very fun to watch!
But Akira - yeah, it's the film that most people of my generation will credit to their first exposure to the world of anime.
And rightfully so - it's a beautifully animated film and one of the most dense sci-fi stories ever put to screen, be it live aciton or animated.
Ghost in the Shell is a marvel in storytelling and animation.
And if you haven't seen the new Appleseed film - YOU MUST!!! It's the most revolutionary anime I've ever seen and will set the bar for animation for YEARS to come!
