Orthographic projections

on Thursday, March, 16, 2006 8:37 PM
Dirk (aka Cueball) asked me via email about ortographic projections of my light cycle. Actually he just asked for Top/Bottom/Side/Front/Back views but what he wants is orthographic projections and I'll be making those shortly. In the mean time I've already made all 6 Ortographic projections of my tank so I thought I'd put them all in one image to the same scale and put them here. I'll do the light cycle shortly and down the road... my recognizer too.

Enjoy,
Carl

I have many neat things you all haven't seen yet. Time, all in due time.

If the rear view image of the lightcycle is correct, wouldn't the lightcycle tip forward somewhat? It just seems like the back wheel sits so much lower on the plane than the front wheel, even given the distance between front and back wheels.

Hi there!

It only looks like that the rearwheel is bigger on the backview,
because of the perspective disortion.
I already tried to model the lightcycle using these images,
but due to this problems i stopped for now.

You are correct. These aren't true orthographic projections. Off the top of my head I can't think of the proper term for non-orthographic projections but that is what these are. The rear wheel appears bigger simply because its closer to the camera. With orthographic projection the camera would be an infinate distance away and all the rays from the camera would be parallel.

Here is what I have so far...

The Orthographic camera isn't cooperating with my tori however. Still trying to figure out why. Everything looks good with a normal camera. The Orthographic camera is creating artifacts on my tori that allow you to see through the tori in spots. You can start to see the effect on the front view but it looks really bad from the top view. I think this should be fixable and if I can figure out how to fix it I'll post a better image.

Hi Carl!
Thank you for the renders, they are *really* helpfull!
If you do a re-render of them, could you darken the red a bit?

regards,
Dirk

Is this one better...

I had to add the sturm keyword to my tori to remove the artifacts. I also darkened the red and made the red and gray surfaces reflective in hopes that the highlights would bring out more details.

What do you think?

Deadly Disks Wrote:You know what I never understood about Tron's tanks? There's no way to change elevation on the main gun. How the heck could Clu and Flynn shoot UP at recognizers?!!

I figured they just controlled the arrow projectile once it left the tank, sort of like the way the discs change direction and swoop around in mid air
