I really wonder if that was faked. Like, they put a small amount of explosive material under the chip, just so everbody could go wow and freak out. It would explain why there was a hole in the motherboard.

Besides, AMD chips have a temperature sensor that shuts everything down when the chip gets too hot. So if these guys really did overclock the chip to extreme levels, they bypassed the sensor. So in other words, that would never happen unless you are screwing around like they did.

Personally, I smell something . . . and it's not a burning chip.

EDIT: I watched it again, there was a flash and I noticed smoke venting up from underneath the chip. This is definitely a tip-off that they used an explosive.

Yeah - it didn't quite look real to me either. It popped up too perfectly, like it was meant to do that. I've never seen a chip break down, but I don't think they would explode like that. I'm guessing they'd fizzle out or simply just ignite and melt down while on fire.

Neat trick though.

I'm with you on that. I never understood the entertainment value of taking perfectly good tech gadgets, like a PSP or what have you, and then smashing it. Why is that entertaining? It seems like an awful waste of money and time. But whatever. I guess if they find destroying cool gadgets more enjoyable than playing with them - more power to 'em.
