I purposely avoided this thread until after seeing the film. Yesterday, I finally got around to seeing it.
To be honest, I really wanted to see the film, but it was not high on my priority list. Though I saw EP1 and EP2 (in the theater) several times each, neither one of them lived up to my expectations. Both films were fun and had some great moments, but neither one made me feel the way I had felt when I had seen the original trilogy.
I've avoided any spoilers to this film (I do that with anything). I've avoided any internet chatter about this film. I even quickly changed the TV channel any time I saw anything related to this film. I wanted ZERO anything to infiltrate my mind before I saw the film.
Sadly, I did find out two elements before seeing the film. That really pissed me off. I accidentally read an internet article about the "gory" factor of the film... well, I read it on purpose, but I honestly didn't expect anything other than commentary on the "gory" factor and the reason for the film's PG-13 rating. I didn't expect they'd just blurt out total spoilers as they did. They ruined the fact that Anakin ended up in a lava pit. DAMN! Well, there goes that surprise. And a guy at work blurted out (in an unrelated conversation) that all the Jedi were shot. DAMN!
SOB! That totally pissed me off and I could have smacked that guy! But I imagine he thought I had already seen the film. I am a little known at the office for my being a SW fan ( almost as much as being a big TRON geek!)
Anyway, for the most part, I knew nothing of the film (other than the obvious) and didn't really expect much. Though people at work who saw the film told me I should see it and that they were impressed, I really didn't expect much. The bits and pieces of things I ended up seeing/hearing here and there all lead to the general feeling in other people of this film being one of the best of the series. Still, I expected nothing.
Yesterday, I finally saw it. As the film started out, I expected nothing. The first two films didn't do much for me (compared to the original films), so why should this one?
As the film played out - I was taken by surprise. I felt a presence I had not felt since... THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY! What was that presence? Pure enjoyment and excitement!
There it was - Anakin's fall and submission to the dark side, the Emperor's evil rise to... well - Emperor, the betrayal and murder of the Jedi, a web of deceit and lies spun by the Emperor, the birth of Darth Vader (in the form we've come to know him), and the set up for the events in the sequel... that is the original Star Wars film that blew me away as a six year old back in the summer of 1977.
I actually found myself emotionally involved in this film. That did not happen much for me during EP1 or EP2... well, maybe during Yoda's saber duel with Dooku, but other than that, not much. It was almost spiritual (for a SW geek like me) to watch Anakin become corrupted and dark... and to witness the murder of the Jedi was a sad moment that made me feel as if I was seeing the darkest times of the SW universe played out right in front of me.
There are really many elements of this film I would like to discuss in great depth, but that would make for a far longer post that I have time for. As a whole, I really enjoyed this film. I enjoyed it so much, just a couple of hours after seeing it for the first time... I went and saw it AGAIN! Yep - TWO SW viewings almost back to back, in one day.
Though I enjoyed the film a lot, there were MANY elements that were clearly rushed. To name a couple: Anakin's turning to the dark side and pledging his life to Sidious's teachings was one of them. This was so rushed, I was disappointed as I saw it play out on screen.
