The PimpDragon's Review of Resident Evil 4 on Wednesday, March, 02, 2005 4:44 PM
Okay, I'll say right off the bat that I've always enjoyed the Resident Evil series. Sure, the acting is usually atrocious - but I find that part of the charm. However, acting aside, the games always deliever in the creepy, cool, blast-things-in-head department.
So, how does Capcom's newest entry into the horror-survival series fare?
It's, bar none, one of the best titles on any next-gen system and probably the best looking game I've ever played (and with 20+ years of gaming under my belt, that's saying something)!
The game brings back my favorite RE hero - Leon Kennedy. He was that "lucky" guy from RE2 who's first day on the force ended up being the day that Umbrella's experments with the T-Cell went to hell in a handbasket.
Well, six years have passed for Leon, who now works for the President. He's been sent to some European country (we never get the name, but it's gotta be somewhere in Spain due to all the spanish being spoken) to retrieve Ashley Graham, the President's daughter. She was kidnapped by an unknown group and now Leon has to get her back.
From the start, this game has atmosphere galore! Fully utilizing the Dolby Pro-Logic II surround system, this game is creepy with a capital CREEPY! The amazing 3-D world created for the game is so incredibly detailed that you'll really get sucked in immediately!
I don't want to get into the story too much, but let's just say that there are NO ZOMBIES in this game. It's a great secret as to what the people you're fighting are and I won't reveal it! Also, some folks from Leon's past show up, which make for some fun surprises if you know the series well.
But, the game itself is wonderful! It's rated M due to extreme violence and some language. It also has a wonderful score and excellent sound and visual effects! The first time through the game took well over 20 hours to complete, which for a non-RPG is impressive. Not only that, but the line delivery is MUCH more believeable! It's actually sporting some decent acting - especially Leon.
You get new weapons and upgrades for each weapon throughout the game from various merchants hidden across the countryside. From Rocket Launchers, to super-shotguns to sniper rifles to magnum pistols, you get to be a true badass when fools stumble upon your path. That's not even mentioning the flash, incendiary and hand grenades!
The game also features action button features. If you hurt an enemy, you will see "A" flash on screen and you can kick them with a spinning kick that'd make Sho'nuff jealous! There are also parts of the storyline (CG sections) that call for your quick timing to keep Leon alive.
The game is spread across 2 discs and NEVER gets boring. It'll keep you on your toes the whole time. Eventually, you find Ashley and get to control her in various stages, which is intense because she has no weapons. She has to use things in her environment to survive.
One neat thing is that once you beat the game, you can play through again with new clothes. For Leon, it's a return to his Raccoon City P.D. Uniform. Ashley ends up looking like Britney Spears! Plus, there are new weapons/upgrades and beating the game unlocks two new mini-games - but I won't describe them as they reveal some secrets of the overall game's storyline.
Well, anyhoo, this game will be in my top 10 of the year (probably my top 3) and if you own a GameCube, you owe it to yourself to play this game.
Here's the breakdown:
Graphics - 10 (bar none one of the prettiest - if not the prettiest - game I've played)
Sound - 10 (rich soundtrack, surprisingly good voice acting and an extremely active Dolby Pro-Logic II surround soundtrack add to one engaging experience)
Control - 9 (it's much better in a 3-D world, but some simple analog control would be great, freeing up a button for something else - like on-the-fly weapon changing - versus wasting one for running)
Value - 8.5 (I'm alreadywhere to buy abortion pill abortion types buy abortion pill online
