Something just came to me. Todd suggested they were bugs in programs, but that didn't seem right to me. If that was the case, the entire Tron universe should be literally crawling with gridbugs. But what if they were simply a biproduct of glitches in the lightcycle grid software? That would fit with them being called gridbugs, instead of simply bugs.
