Is that really all there was too it? Just a space-filler? Maybe there was more detail given in the book? Even the Recognizers were based on actually computer functions so I would've thought the grid bugs were too. I guess it'd seem logical that they were another kind of game unit, like tanks. They were in the game domain when the bugs showed up, so perhaps they were just another game for conscripts to get killed in?
Doesn't explain though what the earth-bound buggers thought they were gonna do about a solar sailer that's flying 100 meters in the air.

I've heard the same thing; that they were inserted into the film as a link to the video game (and to introduce a small moment of tension during the solar sailer sequence.)
They certainly do appear, to my eyes, to be a forced afterthough. They don't fit the "flow" of the scene or even the overall look of the film. And the fact that they interact with the plot not at all (even to the extent of appearing in the same frame with any other character) seems to bear that out.
ON the other hand, it's pretty easy to imagine that they're pests in the electronic world, and Yuri's comment that if the gridbugs got them they'd "had it" simply meant that they would interfere with the performance of the solar sailer and cause it to malfunction (which would get them caught) or maybe crash (which would get them killed.)
I'd hoped that they'd make an appearance in  , but no luck (so far...pinnin' my hopes on an expansion pack or even sequel.)

In the original draft of the script, the grid bugs had a more prominent role. This is why they're in the arcade game, since that was developed concurrently with the film. However, as the script was revised, the grid bug sequence was cut. Since the game was already going to include the grid bugs, a quick scene was added back in to mention them, and tie into the arcade game. The grid bugs are hand-animated, not CGI, and Cindy's voice is just done as an overdub. So it was apparently put in there very late in production, and very cheaply, too.

Maybe they're there to mess with programs, the way Bugs are apt to do.
Yeah, let's say that. Grid Bugs are the Computer's Representation of bugs that have to be worked out of a program.

I believe that is EXACTLY what they were intended to reflect. Where programs are personified as people, computer glitches, unwanted happenings, or bugs in the system if you will, were to be represented by digital bugs
Intended for the game? Sure - why not? BUT they're based on the concept of glitches or computer bugs.
I really would have liked to see what their original role in the film might have been. I can imagine some cool sequence might have been in there - perhaps TRON fighting off the gridbugs - that would have been VERY cool to see!

The idea does make me wonder a little. From a filmmaking standpoint I always found it slightly odd that they bothered to show Ram being taken one way while Flynn goes to Sark's briefing. Sorry - they don't make a direct appearance (which means "no") - though the game does have a few minor bugs (glitches) and I guess those might be considered gridbugs in a way, or perhaps the work of gridbugs :-)

At one point I did expect to see them, but then didn't. Did anyone else come across this? In Thorne's lair (just before you get to him & the Kernel, one of the corrupted scripts said "ooh, gridbugs."
