Noooooooooooooooooooo!
Say it isn't so!
Oh the humanity!
Oh the horror!
How the hell did that miniseries make money? Every (original) BSG fan hated it! And if they didn't, they SHOULD have! Seriously, I've read so many more bad reviews on it than good. I never even watched it - I REFUSED to, but know enough about it to know it was crap - it LOOKED like a load of crap from the adverts for it. It sounded like a load of crap when I watched part of the behind the scenes thing they showed prior to showing the miniseries.
Well, whatever. They can call it what they want. But even if you slap a "fine wine" label on some spoiled vinegar, it's still going to taste like crap. I just wish they could have chosen some other sci-fi series to butcher, I mean, why BSG? What did it ever do to them? Oh... I know what it did to them... it dangled $$ in their faces!
Which brings me back to how the hell did it make any money?
You know what?
Never mind. Don't reply with the statistics or ratings (assuming they were better than I am thinking).
It just saddens me to have my favorite childhood TV show gutted and sold as something that is hardly a feint shadow of the original.. in fact, only the name and very few elements seem to tie it to BSG at all.
Why? WHY! Why couldn't they just make some OTHER miniseries, that WASN'T called BSG?
Those bastards!

THOSE BASTARDS!

Ok, I feel better now
Sorry for ranting. But think about this - what if someone did the same thing to TRON? Just calling a remake (retelling) TRON would NOT make it TRON.

I'd say that almost all fans of the original BSG regard the reimagining as a pathetic, souless copy of the BSG they know and love.
For the most part, I think the only people who like the reimagining are those who are too young to have experienced BSG when it first aired.
It seems younger fans are more interested in the newer, less imaginative fare, much of which places the emphasis on SFX rather than story, pseudo-realism rather than imagination, a youthful, good looking cast over people who can actually act and gratuitous soft core, violence and conflict between the good guys rather than subtle hints that characters obviously involved in a relationship are hitting the sheets, taking time to develop the characters so that we can better relate to them, and letting us feel like there is some camaraderie between the main characters.
Really, I am very glad to have grown up when I did in the 70's and 80's. I got to see lots of things on TV that they just don't show often anymore. Things like the Kung-Fu movies from Hong Kong, like The Five Deadly Venoms and Killer Army, the Godzilla movies, Sci-Fi from the 50's & 60's, WWII war movies, character and dialogue driven movies like Twelve Angry Men and Citizen Kane. Even the musicals like Oklahoma and The Music Man. Plus, I was treated to great new movies like Grease, Star Wars, Jaws and of course TRON.
Ah, I'm done. I could on, but what's the point. People will like what they will like, and that's that. Feh.order abortion pill morning after pill price where to buy abortion pill

I think you really hit the nail on the head with the youthful, good-looking, all about the sex, crap that the kiddies are in to these days. Sadly, I also think this is also heavily a result of what many producers are trying to do - they want to put something together with minimal creativity and effort, throw in some FX and hot cast, slap a cool name on it, and watch the $$ pour in.
This is not "sci-fi" at all... not to me anyway. And it's DEFINATELY NOT BSG!
Interesting how times have changed and continue to change. I grew up in the 70's and 80's myself. I LOVED the shows that were out there, or at least I seemed to love the shows I watched as a kid much better than what I see out there today. I remember my father telling me how things had changed and TV just wasn't as good as it used to be. This was when I was a kid. Now here we are saying this all grown up, about the shows of today.
What (dare I ask) will TV, or entertainment in general, resemble in the future? What if the shallow, trendy, in-shows of today are considered to be the "classic, those were the greats" of tomorrow? Is this even possible? Can it really get worse... ok, that's a stupid question. But imagine the kids of today grown up and in their 30's - will they look back on crap like the BSG miniseries and think "yeah - that's when they knew how to make good entertainment"? And if they do think that, what kind of even crappier, crap will they be showing then? Actually, I can kind of guess it now. Just turn up the crap-factor in the above-mentioned fashion, and figure in pop-culture and trends of the future, along with the mentality of young society and what they will find worthy of watching as "entertainment".
I've often wanted to bring back a more classic style of story telling. I think more "personable" characters who actually talk to each other (not just the plot dialogue) and have substance, combined with some new and creative ideas and some cool, but subtle visual FX would make for a really great show or film. I would bet money that this combination would result in something that people of more than one age narrow group would find worthwhile entertainment, AND would also be profitable to the studios and producers who dared to give their show/film a soul.

I agree, with the caveat that I'm talking strictly about the sci-fi genre.
To be fair, IMO shows like Babylon 5 and Stargate SG-1 do fit the bill. The shows aren't filled with pretty people who can't act. The character relationships are well developed over the course of the shows. The SFX, while very well done and integral to the show, take a back seat to the writing and acting. Unfortunately, shows of that caliber are too few and far between in my opinion.
In short, not everything sci-fi sucks. But, if producers keep making shows that appeal to the lowest common denominator, and the lowest common denoninator is perceived as the sci-fi target audience, then everything sci-fi will suck.where to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online "We are, after all, not God." - Cmdr. I don't watch very much TV these days. Part of it is because I have very little time to do so. Another part is that I find very few TV shows interesting enough to actually sit down and watch every week. I see a lot of shows that just don't interest me, and a lot of shows that just look like the kind of crap the kiddies these days generally eat up (and no - that's not a pot shot at the younger generation as a whole).
The trend I see on Sci-Fi is that it seems to be teetering ever so closer to "find a good-looking cast, dress 'em up nice and trendy, throw in some cool FX and a maybe a little hint of a plot and call it a show".
I don't watch SG-1 and never really got in to Babylon 5, but that is more because of personal taste. The both seem like quality shows - I just never got in to them.
In contrast, I actually liked "Lexx". Sure, the whole show was pretty much a huge play on the sexual-factor of it all - but I don't it was ever meant to be taken seriously. I didn't get to see it all the time, but enjoyed it when I did. Sure, I dug that show on the "there's a hottie" end, but more on the fact that it had a high "odd/weird" factor to it - I LOVE strange, weird, not normal, stuff that makes most people think "what the...". I felt it was important to throw that in, since I know most people probably thought that show was a load of crap and here I am barking about the miniseries BSG being a load of crap.
Anyway, I LOVE good sci-fi, but I don't see too much of it on TV these days, and sadly, it seems the Sci-Fi Channel seems to be testing the water with stale, but FX heavy shows like the BSG miniseries. The target audience of the Sci-Fi Channel may soon be the 14-21 crowd before you know it. Is that even an official age group? Anyway, the sad thing, is they're going to after that age group with some cool-looking, but cold and spirit-less shows with characters that no one cares about.
Boy - if this whole post of mine doesn't make me out to be an old fart... I mean, I feel like... this is what my dad sounded like talking to me about "the changes in TV" a good 20 or more years ago!

Farscape gets my vote for wierd but good sci-fi; it stands out as a great show that really tried to be different. It is without a doubt one the best original shows the Sci-Fi Channel has ever produced.
As an aside, I was a bit surprized when I found out that Jim Henson studios was trying their hand at sci-fi by making Farscape. I was not at all surprized at the quality of the show, nor at how original and imaginative everything about the show is. Two of my favorite movies are Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal, both Jim Henson movies, so I know they are very capable of doing amazing stuff.
IMO, if you like wierd and haven't seen either Farscape, Labyrinth or The Dark Crystal then you are doing yourself a disservice.

You know - I did actually try Farscape once. I think it was in the final season or the season just before. I had seen the commercials many times and finally checked it out once. I really didn't understand what was going on. I thought the characters were pretty imaginative, but didn't get it. Then again, I didn't give it the "three shot" rule (watch it 3 times regardless, and see what sinks in). I can't say it seemed weird, but then again, I probably did not get a good enough sampling of it in just one episode.
Labyrinth - yep, I saw that one! I only saw it once... probably a good 10 years or so ago... at least 10 years ago. I watched it at my girlfriends house - she's my wife now... hmmm, it must have been the film! Seriously, I remember thinking it was pretty cool, but it didn't really capture me they way other favorites in my life have. BUT I'll probably find anything with a Jim Henson factor in it pretty cool. I was very upset in 1990 when I heard he passed away. I really wanted to, and believed I would meet him one day - hopefully as a fellow producer. He was indeed, one of the GREATS!
The Dark Crystal... ohhhhhhh man! I LOVED THAT FILM! Oh yeah, did I LOVE that film!! That was one of a very few films in my life that really took me to another place when I watched it for the first time (and probably still can today). I thought that was such a cool film, from the interesting characters, to the incredible world they lived in, to the magical story the whole film was.
What once was shattered and undone, behold - the two become one. By Gelphleng hand, or else by none.
How was that? I did that by memory without cheating (google-ing). Again, it's been several years since I saw it. Jeez - now you made me want to go and watch The Dark Crystal again... it's been several years since I've seen that one.
Is that on DVD yet? I've got it on some old VHS taped from TV years ago somewhere... I'm soooo getting that on DVD if it's out there. What an awsome movie that one is! What an underappreciated film - much like TRON, I believe it was pretty much ignored at the box office back in 198.... 1982 or 1983? I forget which year it came out, but I think I was in 7th grade at the time because I remember talking about it in the lunch room with some friends. Oh yeah, I want to see that one again now. THANKS for planting that little seed in my mind!
That was a TRUE Henson masterpiece! Henson and Oz - they made quite the creative team, did they not?

Thanks for the link, MutoidMan!
I found The Dark Crystal (Collector's Edition Box Set) listed for $35.00 @ Walmart... looks like I'll be adding another classic to my (small but growing) collection
That was released on DVD around the same time as the BSG series collection - I don't remember hearing anything about it!! It would have been on my Christmas list for sure!

As I read over this thread, it just strikes me as funny how much we all have in common when it comes to movie tastes. I mean, I know that's what brought us here in the first place, but that's one movie. Most of the films being talked about here in these forums, The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, The Black Hole, etc... are all in my collection, and all part of my "favorits list" for one reason or another.
Just seems neat that so many of us have similar interests outside of the Tron world.

Yeah. I've learned two main things around here.
One - TRON fans are generally very creative and highly imaginative people with a very high degree of artistic talent.
Two - TRON fans are also generally very cool and interesting people, who share an admiration for films and TV shows that showcase highly imaginative stories and characters, and usually of a technologically advanced nature and/or fantasy-based and full of magic and wonder.
The movie TRON really showcases BOTH of these points, from the highly imaginative and artistic people who brought the movie to life, to the highly imaginative and fantastic adventure in a technologically advanced electronic world of (user) magic and wonder.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. It does not surprise me that TRON fans are usually of an advanced thinking and artistic nature and share an appreciation for entertainment that is advanced in nature, intelligent as well as entertaining, creative, adventurous, magical and fantastic.
Whoa - that was one hell of a run-on sentence, eh?
It doesn't surprise me that (in general) TRON fans are also NOT fans of some of today's "entertainment"... for instance, the original basis of this thread.
As for me - I feel right at home here at the Sector. I love this place and all of the wonderful and colorful programs that share so many common interests.
