I was under the impression the entire flick was filmed entirely in digital 3D IMAX. Yet the light cycle battle (and probably a few other scenes as well) are "filmed in IMAX format" as I heard it said somewhere.
Um, soooo, okaaaaaaay...are only parts of it filmed in IMAX? I thought the entire movie was in IMAX. Yet when watched on an HD TV, the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen go away from the time the light cycle battle begins and then go away as soon as Quorra and Sam are done riding the elevator up to the habitation level of the safehouse.
Normal movies not filmed in IMAX have to undergo a process where each and every single frame of the movie is computer enhanced to remove the grain that would otherwise show up clear as day in a format as big as IMAX. You could not put a normal non-digital, non-HD movie in an IMAX Theater without doing that or it'd look like poop. The Matrix had to undergo extensive processing before they could show it in IMAX years ago. Yet T:L wasn't processed (that I know of) and the entire thing looked great in IMAX. So what gives?
FYI, not all IMAX is created equal. The screen at the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum in Austin is HUGE and would have blown away a viewing on any other screen almost with it's at-least-two-stories-high, you're-sitting-in-front-of-it-and-not-under-it screen (and yes, it did play on that screen in 3d), whereas the screen at Concord Mills AMC theater in Concord, NC, left me unmoved simply because the screen wasn't much bigger than a normal movie screen. The audio, however, rocked. As I mentioned to you in another thread, the cropped sections were filmed digitally, in 1080. This generally produces a cleaner image to begin with than film. It is strange however they chose to crop at all since 16x9 1080 is about the same AR as imax.
However, the difference on an IMAX screen is very apparent. The 1080 footage looks fuzzy in comparison.
What you're seeing is 1080 footage being "expanded" to IMAX, usually during action and visually expansive scenes. This is also how they assembled Dark Knight, if you recall.

Hey Moses, according to the Wikipedia entry on IMAX:
"A standard IMAX screen is 22 × 16.1 m (72 × 52.8 ft), but can be larger. The world's largest cinema screen (a 15/70 mm IMAX) is the LG IMAX Theatre in Sydney, Australia. It is approximately eight stories high, with dimensions of 35.73 × 29.42 m (117.2 × 96.5 ft) and covers an area of more than 1,015 m2 (10,930 sq ft). The largest digital IMAX screen, almost 100 feet (30 m) wide, is located at the Warren Theatres in Wichita, Kansas.
IMAX theatres are described as either "Classic Design" (purpose-built structures), or "Multiplex Design" (retrofitted auditoriums)."
Those retrofitted auditoriums are sometimes referred to as "IMAX Light" or "LieMAX", since, in some people's view, they don't contain a "true" IMAX screen.
Think about the size of a standard IMAX screen. That's like projecting TRON: Legacy onto the side of a 7 story building! So yeah, TRON: Legacy probably ROCKED on a "true" IMAX screen! (Regrettably, I never saw it in IMAX. I just saw it in 2D and RealD 3D on a standard screen. But it was still awesome!)

I love "true" imax but the ripoffs they're putting into standard theaters is a shame. Basically they use two 2k projectors with the same output projected on each other. Real IMAX is analog but has a perceived resolution of many times this so these "local" imax screens are basically just a rip off to get people to pay a little extra for a slightly bigger screen. Here is the quote from wikipedia:
"A digital version debuted in 2008. The new system is a projection standard only. Digital IMAX systems can show either 2D or 3D content in DCI or IMAX digital format (which in itself is a superset of DCI). The digital system alleviates the need for film reels and facilitates inexpensive distribution of IMAX features.
The digital installations have caused some controversy, as many theatres, notably AMC and Regal, have branded their screens as IMAX after merely retrofitting standard auditoriums with IMAX digital projectors. The screen sizes in these auditoriums are much smaller than those in the purpose-built auditoriums of the original 15/70 IMAX format. These theatres charge the same premium pricing as the purpose-built IMAX theatres, resulting in consumer confusion. IMAX marketing makes no distinction between the new smaller digital installations and the original format.[30] Some high profile figures such as actor Aziz Ansari [31] and film critic Roger Ebert[32] have also actively voiced their concerns.
Another disadvantage is a lower resolution than normal IMAX film, estimated to be about 12,000 × 8,700 theoretical pixels or 6,120 × 4,500 actually discernible pixels.[33]
IMAX digital currently uses two 2K-resolution Christie projectors with Texas Instruments Digital Light Processing technology alongside parts of IMAX's proprietary technologies. The two 2K images are projected over each other, producing an image that is potentially brighter 2K digital cinema. Originally, IMAX considered using two Sony 4K projectors.[34] Some reviewers note that this approach does not produce image quality higher than single 4K projectors, which are available for some non-IMAX theatres"abortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion
