Garrett Hedlund aka Sam Flynn from TRON: LEGACY -- is now in the lead to star in the live action version of AKIRA -- the classic '88 anime film.
Click here to read the Variety article which made the announcement.
Given the prospective Hedlund/AKIRA casting, it's fittingly ironic that AKIRA and TRON: LEGACY each has a lead, hero character that sports a high speed, futuristic cycle...
Here's a trailer for the original AKIRA anime film.

Akira was my first EVER taste of Japanese Anime and Manga, so it will always have special high standards for me when it comes to any remakes. However looking at the names behind the production of this movie it SHOULD be good, especially if they basically redo the anime and not try to cram to much of the overall story. Ideal situation is that this is the first of three movies to give the story justice.

The only role I can think of that he'd be the best fit for the role of Kaneda.

I hope this will not comfront a possible TRON 3 production schedule.
Though this live action adaption could be awesome. The original is! Though I like the Miyazaki films [Sprited Away] more if it comes to japanese anime films. Unfortunately, such adult anime films are never shown in tv here.
Perfect Blue was never released in my country, for example. And Ghost in the Shell was only shown twice in the past 10 years.abortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion

Everytime there is an "americanized" remake of anything, you can bet it will be screwed up.
Reports are that the script is horrible. It isn't even set in Japan, it is in New Manhattan. Tetsuo has been changed to Travis. The characters aren't high school age kids but are in their 30s. It goes on and on. It makes me wonder if there is even going to be an Akira at all or is his name going to be changed to Albert or Alex.
The World War Z movie got a major reimaging (i.e. screwing over) by Brad Pitt and now Akira.

You read Cracked? Awesome. I love Cracked. But Robert Brockway, the person who wrote the article you posted, is not the most trustworthy of sources. Not to mention, even if he IS telling the truth, he did say that the script that arrived may or may not be authentic, and acknowledged that there was no reason on earth for him to get the script.order abortion pill morning after pill price where to buy abortion pill

They're doing a live-action of Akira? Heaven help us.
No, now that I think of it, I guess I did hear that.
Honestly. Does no one have a new idea anymore, that just about every movie that is coming out lately is either a sequel or a remake??

There are numerous online reviews of the script and they all pretty much describe the same thing.

At this point the only thing left Japanese in Akira will be the title. This would be the equivalent of John Woo "reimaging" The Godfather and casting with all Hong Kong actors trying to speak with italian accents. Does Hollywood not like putting asian actors in leading roles other than Chow Yun Fat or Jackie Chan?
The thing that made Akira fascinating was that it was set in Japan with a different culture and things that you don't normally see in the U.S. What I think Akira is going to end up being is another 2 hour big budget (ok, maybe not so big as reports are only $90 mill) slow motion action sequence with a sci-fi plot somewhere hidden in the background.
I swear there has to be tens of thousands of people out there writing original scripts but Hollywood continues to ignore them and just take the easy route doing remakes and horrible sequels.order abortion pill http://unclejohnsprojects.com/template/default.aspx?morning-after-pill-price where to buy abortion pill

Well, another thing about Akira was the animation itself. I mean, I vaguely remember this. Wasn't it a big deal because it was one of the first mainstream animes? (Or maybe I'm only remembering it that way because I was young at the time) But I seem to remember everybody was really excited about the animation.
Which is why it seems to me that making it live-action is a sort of fail.

It's one of the greatest manga and anime classics by Katsuhiro Otomo. I highly, highly, highly recommend you read the graphic novel first prior to seeing the anime version. I have the entire 6 volumes. Otomo's one of my favorite illustrators and has been since the 1980s when I first caught the AKIRA buzz back in day where Epic Comics, a subsidiary of Marvel used to exist.
And if you did'nt know, Otomo's illustration style was inspired by Jean "Mobius" Giraud who, in turn, was one of the production artists and designers for the original TRON. Otomo ranks up there with the creative gods.
I'm a bit stunned that Disney did NOT think of hiring Otomo overseas to do a graphic novel adaptation of Tron : Legacy. He would have been PERFECT for that job and not Marvel. Unfortunately, Disney's purchase of Marvel is a bit of a problem. I recall that Dark Horse Comics did a manga adapation for Star Wars trilogy back in the 1990s which was well regarded.
Otomo has an extremely 'cinematic' feel to the AKIRA graphic novel and other works as well.
I think I know why they want Garrett in AKIRA because of the way he looked and rode the bike in TRON : Legacy and acting a bit of a rebel, just like Kaneda's riding his uber-cool bike in his gang in the beginning of the story.
Anyway, READ the graphic novel. It's a classic. |

It won't surprise me if they F--K it up. Their mistake was not hiring a far more qualified writer who has experience in transitioning manga/anime version to the American format and one who has respect for the original source material. I still think they should keep it completely faithful to the story, BUT the biggest problem with that is AKIRA is a HUGE story that would not fit easily in a two hour format.
But I wonder if they are planning a live action trilogy so the whole story of six volumes will fit in about six hours worth of footage?

It was a manga (graphic novel) originally in black and white in Japan in the 1980s until it went over to Marvel (EPIC Comics) to be colorized in Photoshop and translated into english. I do have the original colorized version and it's beautiful. However, the black and white version as originally INTENDED is still available from Dark Horse Comics, to which Marvel, I believe, lost the rights eventually to. DHC picked the ball up and did a fantastic job.
Get it on Amazon or Barnes and Noble. Then watch the anime version last. You will see a huge difference however, the animation is beautiful to behold. Especially back in 1988 which is impressive. I first saw it in a select theater when it was touring in the USA in 1989-1990. order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pill |

True test is if you read PWOT or JDATE (when it was a 3+ year serial of Halloween stories) or even know what I'm talking about....
Thing is... Cracked is only kinda-sorta factual.
Having seen Akira... this is likely to suck pretty hard.
Gatchamann (BOTP, G-Force, etc) was my intro to Anime.

I like Garret, but I'm not convinced about "Americanization" of anime series or films.
Every time they've tried to do it, it didn't turned out well.
Japanese culture is hard to understand for most American people, so if they want to remake a film, they have to remove most of the original Japanese elements. The result: a nice movie, with great effects, but with no real content.
That's what is happening to Transformers, the series began as a Jap-American anime based on the Japanese toys, but now we have 3(and 2 more coming soon) movies that have nothing to do with the originals. I like them, they're good and with a nice soundtrack, but they're really bad in terms of the moral of the story (I wonder if I can say there's a good story).
Another example: Dragon Ball Evolution. It has nothing to do with the original Dragon Ball.
I'm also concerned about Hatsune Miku's Americanization by Toyota :S Why do they have to make this to our beloved anime characters and movies?
I'll go to the cinema to watch Akira, I really hope they won't mess it up..
Another thing I'm worried about is that if Garret is working on Akira... what's with TR3N ???

Yes, but the script everyone's talking about is most likely just a draft. You guys should know about this, about two or three years before T:L came out there was a script making the rounds with a completely different plot, none of the characters, it was just a different thing. No reason to expect anything different from this as far as I'm concerned.

Uh oh, never a good sign when sites start posting news of actors in other roles. Brings back memories when Trek sites posted William Shatner appearances at horse shows. Lets not go down that road.
