Here's another piece of the backstory:

Spark stood at the shore of the sea of simulation, looking out towards where the portal shone. If she squinted, she could make out flashes of colored light against it. A light-jet battle. She'd seen the Rectifier fly overhead and she knew it was coming down to the wire. A part of her wanted to rez in her own jet and follow, but she knew she would never get there in time to do any good. And frankly, she was tired. After Yori's death, she had given up trying to get Flynn to do something, resigning herself to the fact that he was going to sit and watch and there was nothing she could do about it. At least he was looking after Quorra, which was something. And she had stopped going into the city to watch the games soon after Rinzler had appeared. When she'd found out just who Rinzler was, she had been sickened.

Spark leaned against the wall of Clu's skybox, watching programs fight in the disk arena below. She and Clu were alone in the room. Clu rarely asked her to come watch the games with him anymore, he knew she didn't care for the fact that the battles were to the death. But when the messenger had come to her and told her that Clu had set up something special, her curiosity had gotten the better of her and she had come to watch. Soon there was only one program left in the arena.

"Final round: Combatant 7 vs. Rinzler," the announcer voice proclaimed. Spark turned a questioning gaze on Clu, who sat calmly on his black couch. "Rinzler?" Spark asked, eyebrow raised. Clu only motioned for Spark to watch the arena again. The User did so, her eyes focusing on the black-and-red helmeted figure who strode into the light to face the waiting conscript. Minimal circuitry glowed on the program's body, and Spark's eyes narrowed as she recognized the patterns. She spun to face Clu, shock and disgust clear in her eyes. "Clu! How could you?"

The gold-circuited program looked at her, his face unreadable. "He wasn't derezzed. I thought you'd be pleased to know that. And he always was attached to the games." Spark glared at him. "This is...I have no words for it." She shook her head in disgust and stalked towards the door. "Not going to stay and watch the end?" Clu asked mildly. Spark's fists clenched. "No. Don't ask me to come here again, Clu." Her voice was cold. Before she shut the door, she turned back. "This won't end well, Clu. I hope you know that."

Spark had 'met' Rinzler later, and she was disgusted by what Clu had done to Tron. She had tried to tell Flynn, but he hadn't believed her. He had thought she was just trying to get him to do something. Eventually, she had given up. Now, as she looked out over the sea, she felt the almost audible snap as Tron broke free of the reprogramming. She gasped and knelt on the ground, casting her consciousness outwards, looking for him. She saw him fight with Clu and fall into the sea. I should go after him, she thought, pulling her mind back into her body. But before she could do more than reach for her baton, there was a huge explosion. Spark was flung to the ground by the force of the shockwave, and she knew that there was only one thing that could cause an explosion like that. Reintegration. Reaching out with her mind, she confirmed it. Both Flynn and Clu's presences were gone. She got to her feet slowly and looked down at the baton in her hand. After only a moment's hesitation, she leaped into the air and activated the jet. Flynn and Clu may be beyond my help, but I have to believe that Tron isn't, the thought drove her to fly faster as she aimed towards the spot where she knew Tron had fallen.

The program sank deeper into the dark waters, circuits flickering between red-orange and blue-white. There was a strange roaring in his ears, and he couldn't seem to move. He felt a shift in the current around him and he blinked in surprise as he saw a blue-white circuited figure swimming towards him. Spark?

The dive Spark had taken from her jet when she felt she was above the right spot carried her deep into the dark sea. Her eyes focused on the flicking circuits that marked Tron's position, and she pushed herself deeper. Her hands closed around his wrists and she began pulling him upwards. Tron's limp weight tugged her back down and her lungs burned as they used up the last of her oxygen. Her strokes slowed and her grip on Tron's arms slackened as her body succumbed to the lack of air.

Tron felt the User's grip loosen and saw her eyes drift shut. No! he shouted silently, struggling against whatever it was that kept him immobile. Suddenly he could move again as the fight between the Rinzler and Tron identities ceased. One thing that both agreed on - no harm must be allowed to come to Spark.

Blackness tugged at Spark's thoughts and she fought it as best she could. At the very edge of her awareness, she felt Tron's arm curl around her chest and the buffeting of the water around them as Tron propelled them both upwards. Her head broke the surface and she began to cough almost immediately. Tron held her there, keeping her head up as she coughed the water out of her lungs. Spark tried to tread water but her limbs were sluggish and refused to obey her mind's commands. She would have gone under again had Tron not been there to hold her up. The program moved Spark so she was hanging onto his back and he struck out towards the far off shore. As long as he was focused on Spark's well-being, the fighting in his code was not debilitating. So he would get Spark to shore and then figure out what to do next.

Okay, this is actually part one of a two-part piece that explains why, in this AU RP, Rinzler is Rinzler and not Tron. I'll post the other part as soon as I get it written - i.e. sometime tomorrow. And I'll also post my reply to the RP then as well. I'm going to bed now. Because Spark isn't exactly a User anymore. She's neutral, and Clu respects that. Don't worry, more of the backstory is coming. Everything will be explained, eventually. Thanks for the compliment, though.
