Posts: 10 | What bugged me most about Tron and Legacy and some questions on Thursday, September, 15, 2011 9:48 AM
Before I begin my rant let me start by explaining a few things. Being disabled I have limited means of entertainment and what I can do, naturally I have taken a liking to video games and of course movies. I am a tough critic and I mean tough, there are movies that have done exceptionally well in the box office that in my opinion only did well due to the name behind them, Directors, Flashy Trailers etc.
Now I have always been a fan of fantasy but not SciFi Fantasy and I had little expectation of this movie when I rented it (Legacy) and let me rectify that mistake now by saying OMFG. I enjoyed it so much I went back and watched the classic 1982 original film and then I had made another love...but here is what bothers me...
I don't think I will have my lusts satisfied with another title or series in a LONG time to come. As I stated before I have never been a Sci Fi fan up until now and no not even Star Wars. I mean I enjoyed the films from a child and when the 3 prequels came to theaters I saw them and that was it. But with Tron I have watched both titles maybe 8 times now and have shared them with all of my family making them sit down and watch it with me within the last few days of being aware of the titles.
What scares me the most though is how is the name Tron going to go from here? Don't get me wrong I WANT them to continue it but like the Matrix I am afraid producers are going to turn something that is gold and make it into shyt. I have not heard much about the 3rd movie but know it is (or has been said to be) in development. I wanted to hear from you the community who has been on the Tron Train longer than I what you think and if you may try and speak from a legitimate perspective and not a fanboy/girl one.
In closing the thing that bugged me the most about Tron/:Legacy is that I think it has got me hooked onto SciFi fantasy with no other direction to turn to. I have given others a chance and never became interested or involved as I have with these titles and I sort of feel lost not knowing what to do from here...Please any suggestions or if you would just like to answer above questions/critique what have you.

I can't really tell whether this is a good thing or bad thing. Sounds like you really enjoy Tron but are now upset that there isn't that much out there to compete. I think there are some good sci-fi/fantasy movies out there,... Lord of the Rings, indiana jones (minus the last installment),.. etc.
One thing that you can devote your attention to is "how" you watch these movies. I am really into sound and home theaters and watching these movies on a dinky 21" crt is nothing like watching the blu-ray with a good 8 channel sound system and screen.... so I guess that's one avenue you can pursue. I started a thread on home theaters which you can check out... http://www.tron-sector.com/forums/default.aspx?a=top&id=426976&pg=1
Best wishes, and at the end of the day,... just have fun! END OF LINE |

Let me just preface by again welcoming you Malakye to the Sector here and to the world of Tron. To me it is exciting to see new fans of the franchise. This is what the producers were hoping for. Not just to touch the audience of the original film, but to capture new fans as well. It is clear that from you and others.. this has happened. I think they expected more.. and hopefully with Tron Uprising that will only help.
I am right there with you with the “I’ve seen it 8 times, and have shown it to all my family and friends.” (I think my count is more than 8 now!) Even my 2 young boys love it. Though they don’t quite have the attention span to sit though ALL of it. (The slower parts). They run in to see the light cycle scene every time. Surprisingly, there were actually a few people.. and I mean a few.. who didn’t like Legacy. (Mainly for plot reasons.. for they thought the effects were amazing.)
As far as where they will go with it.. I can only hope it will not turn into “shyt” as some sequels to films have done. (It’s a slight fear of mine as well.) Its like they reach for places to go with it just to make it go. The end result is completely unsatisfying. Legacy wasn’t perfect I think we can all agree on some things we would have liked to have seen done differently. But all in all, we are satisfied.. and craving more. My fear is that there's so many places to go with it, or places that you could go with it, that they won’t be able to fit it all into one film.. it will feel cramped.. rushed… but hey.. I guess we can always hope for not only a 3 rd.. but a 4 th as well. But Its like right now it’s at a crossroads.. and depending on which way you turn with the story.. it could go good.. it could go.. not so good.. Let’s hope the new writer they hired will do it justice.
Where to turn.. Don’t let yourself think that you just HAVE to turn to some other Sci-Fi Fantasy film/show. Unless you really really want to. If you’ve tried other things and not liked them, that’s okay. If you’re looking for suggestions there is a thread around here called..”Tell me which is your favorite Sci-Fi show that you never missed” (I think its in the General Discussion section) Which lists a few that fans here tend to like. (That would be shows though I think, not films) I have found that usually…. A lot of us here like the same other things. Personally I know I am a fan of several Sci-Fi/Sci-Fi Fantasy shows and movies..
But to me.. Nothing beats this.

Okay, the refrigerator scene was a bit much. And the UFO's were weird, but not much more then any supernatural thing from the other movies. But I still like it more then Temple of Doom. where to buy abortion pill abortion types buy abortion pill online Thanks to FlynnOne for the signature!

Are you kidding?
"Nuke the Fridge", Magnetic Alien Heads, Fire Ants, Parkour Inca Indians, Shia Labouf as Indy's Son? Did I mention the refrigerator? They Nuked it, he *survived* inside of it? Lead has a pretty low meting point ya know?
He would have looked like Han Solo in carbonite when they opened that fridge up...
Come to think of it... that would have been kind of a cool way to end the franchise...
How Many Children have now died after crawling into an old refrigerator playing Indiana Jones??
Indy could have hid in a bomb shelter on the site - I could have bought into that, but a refridgerator? Seriously? Even at 16, you have to realize that the film jumped the shark in the first 15 minutes. Watch Raiders and then Watch Crystal Skull.. No Comparison. None.
For another perspective, take a look at that Southpark Episode (which I will not embed here)

Thank you DRP and Clue3.0 for your responses.
@ DRP Its not Fantasy in general I am having a problem finding to my liking its SciFi Fantasy. I am a huge Medieval Fantasy nerd but the closest thing I really enjoyed before Tron in the SciFi genre was Final Fantasy VII (the game) and I believe that was due to the fact it was my first RPG I ever played with actual story telling.
@ Clu 3.0 Oh wow I was not even aware of the Animated Series coming out...you my friend just lit a light in my world lol That should definitely hold me over for a bit as long as they pull it off well and from the trailer it doesn't look bad at all ^_^ but then again neither did the Matrix -_- anyway... lol Yea Thats awesome that even your kids will watch it. The only person I am trying to get to watch it in my family now is my Mother whom is hard to get to sit down for more than 15 minutes as is...

Heh. And here my answer to the question would've simply been "It was terrible."
I'm glad I'm not the only one who found the fridge scene ridiculous, though. What do you want? I'm busy.
Program, please!

The only difficult thing right now about the animated series is waiting for it. I'm not into animated series so I hope its good. I can't wait to see the angle on Uprising. Taking place between Betrayal and Legacy... Speaking of Betrayal...something for your Tron fix... Have you seen the graphic novel called "Tron Betrayal"? It covers from after Tron and up till the Coup. I enjoyed it.
I don't know about you but I would love to see a live action weekly show of Tron... But can you say expensive??? Probably why its not an option.

Have you given the Tron: Evolution video game a spin yet? It's far from perfect, but it'll surely feed your Grid lust while you wait out the next installment(s).

Also, weighing in on the Indiana Jones debate, the first and best film (Raiders) can not and will not ever be topped. It's just a perfect film from every angle. That said, I'd rate Last Crusade as the next best, Temple of Doom third, and Crystal Skull dead last. The biggest reason so many fans were disappointed with Crystal Skull was because it was very much a product of modern times whereas Lucas and Spielberg were touting it as a return to form akin to Raiders. Instead, we got an overdose of crappy CG, lame comedy relief (pompadour monkeys) and the total waste of Indy's best leading lady. There's talk of a fifth Indy film, and Spielberg and Harrison Ford both acknowledge the mistakes that were made with Crystal Skull, so let's hope that if they do another one (and I for one would welcome it) they get it right this time.
"It ain't the years, honey... it's the mileage."
Indeed.

I smell indy reboot. That's all they do anymore.
Yeah, and you could head over to youtube and watch all the Tron: Evolution Cutscenes. Those play like a short film.

Saw a bit of Automan on youtube. Cute show, no real depth, and I liked Automan's innocence and courage. Course, I was younger then so I didn't ask for much in my TV shows.
Forget it, Mr High and Mighty Master Control. You aren't making me talk.

Too bad River Phoenix had to up and kick the bucket, he was a dead ringer for a young Harrison Ford and could have easily perpetuated the series in a pretty epic way. Ah, what could have been...
