Legacy DID have a long Real World to Digital World sequence

on Sunday, September, 11, 2011 7:16 PM
Many thought the blunt instantaneous switch from real world to digital world wasn't the best. Many wondered how they would have updated it and when it was *pop* done, Sam's on the grid they felt a tiny bit cheated.

Now this is my own theory mind you but...

Watch the end credits of the movie. All the effects they use for moving around and showing the names, it looks very much like an updated real world to computer world transfer sequence. I wouldn't be surprised to it was originally created to be used for that transition sequence.

That may be true, but, it wasn't put in where people expected it.

I really don't understand the big deal about this. It wasn't used because of exposition. The whole point is that Sam had no idea what happened until he ran out the door of the arcade and onto the street, and we weren't supposed to either. If they'd done a long, drawn-out sequence, then that would've been lost because we would've known exactly what was going on.

Besides--and I've pointed this out before-- the "down the wormhole" thing has been done a billion times, from Original Tron to Bill & Ted to various dumb TV shows I can think of, etc. Unless the T:L folks made it very, very unlike everything we've seen before along this vein, it would've been tired and stupid, and then we would've been complaining about THAT. I'd rather have it be a mystery than the same bloody thing AGAIN.where to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online

I was somewhat disappointed by the transition sequence (not on my initial viewing, of course; at that point in time the effect blew me away!). It was a cool effect specifically designed for 3D, which I found disappointing upon watching it at home (in 2-D).

Though I do have to say, I freaking LOVED the end credits sequence. That part just blew my mind.where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill online

This piece of the movie is often talked about for good reason. I think fans of the original mostly liked that transition and were "expecting" something similar in the squeal. At the same time, I do not think it would have fit into the plot of T:L as Sam did not realize that he was somewhere else until on the street with the recognizer. A 40 second transition scene would have completely blown this surprise. Also, for people who have never seen the original tron, it must have been a much better "surprise" as they would not have fully realized the transition until he was out on the street as well.

Agree with the above two. They also made an analogue of Flynn's arcade on the Grid to sell Sam's subtle confusion. The experience of digitization shown in T:L seems to be accurate to what Sam must have perceived when he was sent to the Grid. I like that they tried to do it a different way than in the original.

There's a rumor that there was a more extensive "real world to electronic world" sequence, but Disney execs asked it to be cut because they felt the audience might become "bored" by it. They based this on the reaction they got from the screening of the original Tron at Disneyland.

That instant transition was definitely a disappointment for me.

A real world to digital transition for the current population of ADD afflicted could have been, seeing from Sam's point of view, the inside of the hidden room rezzing from a low resolution abstract wire cad type illustration transitioning the final higher resolution. This could have taken a only about 3-5 seconds.

Then cut to Sam sitting in the chair with a WTF look on his face, running from the room, then cut to him running out the front door.

I think you make a good point here. It probably came down to the fact that a transition didn't "really" add to the story and would have been another reference back to the original movie. I loved these,.. that's a big door, flynn's arcade, identity disc instruction dialog, bikes, recognizers,... etc but the average family of 4 going to the movie didn't get to much out of these. Sure, dad may have seen the original film, but mom and little Jimmy and Timmy wouldn't get the references as they were born 20 years after the original (and never saw it) and mom doesn't like "sci-fi". At the end of the day some disney exec probably said that it has more emotional impact if Sam finds out that he's on the Grid when confronted with the bright light of a recognizer vs a slow 25 second special effects shot. There's also a good chance that disney exec never even saw the first movie.... At the end of the day it's movie ticket sales for these guys, and you're not going to extend a movie or pay another quarter million dollars for another special effect shot that's "not needed."

That would imply the Grid was being loaded into memory instead of Sam being loaded into it. Considering Sam would be "frozen" for the entire scan (like Flynn was in the first), he would barely be able to perceive his own transport process.

The whole point is you would not be able to experience Sam's jolt if it took any longer than a blink to happen. Sam would be surprised, you wouldn't.

I still think showing any more than they did would have been a gratuitous (and expensive) fan service, and not much more.

I actually liked it the way it was done. Nice compromise between the old and new.

This time it wasn't about the amazing concept of a human in a computer world - it was about a computer word so real you couldn't tell the difference even when you already had a clue about what was possible (i.e. Sam knew about the grid and that one could go there, but had never been before).

We, the experienced viewer, are expected to identify with Sam. We know about the grid, but we've never been there either. So Sam is shocked at the sophistication, and we are shocked at the sophistication.

The absence of it where it belonged is a shame. Who cares about other movies, done to death, ADD, etc. It's how it happens in Tron. Guess Tron canon isn't appreciated by anyone here. Pretty sad. Just remember why Tron: Legacy even exists.

Many people who hadn't seen the original had no clue what happened there in T:L. I had to explain it to some.

Every other movie has a cop chase scene, yet it's there in T:L with no problem and nobody complaining. A wormhole is only as cheesy and overdone as you make it. Kosinski and team could've crafted an awesome one. I'd gladly give up a few of the verbal references in T:L to Tron to have a 3-D wormhole transition. I'd also gladly give up some or the slow exposition explaining Clu's rise for it. Star Wars has its yellow scrolling text at the start of six movies. Why can't Tron have its canonical traditions?

Execs wanted to cut Dorothy singing 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' from Wizard of Oz because it was too slow. Execs often don't know what is best.

Reading posts here ever since T:L was announced makes me feel like I could make a movie about baking cookies and all I'd need to do is put circuitry stripes on the cook, the oven door and kitchen utensils to slap the Tron name on it. And everyone would think it's wonderfully Tron; evolved ever so eloquently. A perfect sequel to a dated and trite movie. I'm glad you all like Tron and its foundational principles so much.

Have to agree, many didn't realize what happened in that scene. They should at least have shown the laser firing. They went for 'shock' but I think they got 'confusion' instead.

To the T:L generation the Shiva Laser means nothing, holds no significance whatsoever.

Of course this is a quibble. I am soooooooooooo glad they made T:L, I never thought I'd get more of the Tron universe in movie form and am thankful for that.

If I had the editing skills I'd make a youtube video putting the end credits scenes (editing out names etc) INTO the transfer scene just to see what it might have looked like.

Joe Friday never chased a base jumping cyberthief who landed on a taxi. Nor Bruce Willis. Nor Robocop. It was still different.

Look, it's a different movie, meant to take place in a different system at a different time, so yeah, things might work in a different way. Not everything in it can be the same as the original. In the list of things that don't hold true to the original that piss me off, that would fall so far down it wouldn't even be worth mentioning. If I have to accept frigging WEATHER in a damn COMPUTER, then the lack of a drawn-out transition-to-Grid scene is a piece of cake.

Can't say I really care whether other people "got" it or not, either. It was pretty damn obvious to me. Sam sees a prompt about a laser, hits "yes," hears the sound of a piece of equipment powering up, cut to a shot clearly showing the laser directly behind him in a very prominent position in the shot, and suddenly he's in this weird glowing world. What did they THINK happened??? I mean, really? It wasn't that hard to figure out. Of all the things in this film that one could be ambiguous about, that one ranks pretty low.

What do you want? I'm busy.

I agree with this %100. I waited 28 years for an update of the laser digitizing and wormhole scenes. The Flying 3-D cubes was "ok" but disappointing IMO. "Tron 3" MUST include the full sequence IMO.

"The film is about finding human connection in an increasingly digital world." - Joseph Kosinski
