While it looked cool can you imagine:
= How cold it would be during the winter
= How hot it would get in the summer
= How loud it would be when it rains
= How insects swarming the lights would swarm inside anytime one of the doors opened
= How badly it would echo inside
Maybe that was just his extended garage that he lived in during cool spring/fall months and he had a main house a bit further back we didn't see.

If Center City is in California.. Depending on where in California the hot/cold might not be much of an issue. Neither would the rain be. Now I've never lived in California, but I have in Seattle. I was surprised how while there were a fair amount of bugs.. Its nothing like the south and midwest.

I'd have to look at the screencaps again, but maybe he's got it insulated? (though the doors would still be a problem)
And, of course, that assumes you don't like the sound of rain on the roof. Or echoing (sounds like this singer's dream to me!). Besides, with all the crap he had crammed in there, I bet the acoustics aren't nearly what you'd think. If it were empty, maybe.
What do you want? I'm busy.
Program, please!

There's something about the sound of rain falling on a metal roof can be very soothing.
Sam's place is made of corrugated shipping containers. Two side-by-side (forming a loft) over a pair separated by large bay. There's no insulation in that place aside from maybe the roof itself. You can see the wall structure from the inside as well as the door from the containers. Sam's got a fireplace but not much else.
I've read that insects are much less common on the west coast. The climate is suppoed to be much more temperate
I have to watch the "making of tron legacy" feature again, but I think that place *really* exists. It got a digital makeover to give it the Dumont signage, but it's real. Maybe someone can track it down like they did with Kevin and Sam's Ducati Bikes?
Encom Tower is also a real structure, it is really a hotel...

I think we're looking at a variation of the Adam Kalkin Quik House

404 on the Quik-House. But yes, shipping containers seem to be becoming popular as building materials. I don't know if what you linked to is what I'm thinking of, but I read once that someone figured shipping containers would make good easy, cheap housing for homeless folks.

Wouldn't work in Houston. As far as the noise from rain, I would sleep like a baaaaby program. Love the rain. We need some in Texas.

Arg! Weird. It's easy to find pics. Just Google "Quik House" and you'll get a ton. #3 on image search is the model similar to Sam's place.

That's it. Not really a surprise when you consider the Director's background as an architect,
